Mercedes-Benz Offers Fans the Ultimate Off-Road G-Wagen Experience

Miami Herald23-06-2025
The Mercedes G-Wagon has a loyal following, and since 2020, Mercedes-Benz has been offering the most dedicated and passionate G-Class enthusiasts a unique, action-packed program featuring their favorite boxy 4x4s.
At the G‑Class Experience Center near its factory in Graz, Austria, fans can experience what it's like to drive a G-Wagon in situations other than traversing city streets, daily commutes, mall parking lots, and the valet areas behind velvet ropes at high-end restaurants. Mercedes is more than eager to show its loyal fans what the G-Wagon is capable of at the absolute limit, whether it be on extreme slopes of up to 35 degrees, experiencing one-wheel traction, deep mud, or on the infamous Iron Schöckl's 100% gradient.
Since Mercedes introduced the experience in 2020, eager fans worldwide were quick to fill every slot when it offered the experience every year. However, this year, Mercedes‑Benz is expanding its fan-favorite G‑Class customer programs with new challenges and more unique experiences.
This year, Mercedes is offering loyal fans of the G-Class SUV the chance to have some new experiences related to their favorite boxy off-roader, including the opportunity to embark on a curated adventure that shows the luxury 4x4's capabilities in a challenging new environment.
These new G-Class-related experiences are the first to take place away from the G‑Class Experience Center in Graz. Dubbed the G‑Class Expedition Desert Edition, 20 enthusiasts in various G-Class vehicles will trek across the mountains and deserts of Morocco over the course of five days.
In essence, Mercedes is offering an off-roading luxury summer camp centered around the G-Wagon, which kicks off with a welcome dinner and a night at a 5-star hotel in Marrakech before setting off on a 504-mile (811 km) off-road journey across Morocco the next morning. Here, drivers will rock across the stunning Atlas Mountains, where they'll climb up to 9,186 feet (2,800 meters), traversing scenic passes, rocky trails, water crossings, and the kind of rugged terrain that G-Classes are made for.
After a night at a hotel near Dades, drivers continue the trip on the Anti-Atlas range toward the Merzouga Desert. Enthusiasts will get to eat lunch at Gara Medouar, a crater made famous by the James Bond film Spectre, before heading off to a private desert camp in time for a spectacular sunset over the dunes. On day four, it's full desert mode. Guests will drive as part of convoys while they play in the sand and eat each other's dust. The journey wraps up in Errachidia with a charter flight back to Marrakech and a final farewell dinner to cap off this wild off-road escape.
In addition to the Morocco experience, this year, Mercedes is offering G-Class fans an extended and more challenging version of the G‑Class Experience. Dubbed the 'Private Coaching' package, G-Wagon fans get an extended look at what makes the legendary off-roader over the course of two days.
After spending a night at a hotel in Graz following the usual G-Class experience program, drivers will get to experience the legendary Schöckl test track. For the first time, drivers will tackle the nearly 3.5-mile (5.6 km), 4,470-feet-high (1,445 meters) course that's been putting every G-Class through its paces for over 40 years alongside dedicated instructors.
Mercedes calls it the Nurburgring Nordschleife for off-readers, where full-on thrills can be found when the asphalt gives way to gravel, then nothing but raw terrain. Drivers will navigate their G-Wagons on 60% gradients, 40% inclines, knee-high ledges on one or two wheels, deep ruts, hollow paths, and will even have to squeeze past massive trees and sheer drops.
According to Mercedes-Benz, these events will only be around for a limited time and won't be cheap. The two-day 'Private Coaching' G-Class Experience is only available until November and will cost 9,950 euros (~$11,465) for two people. It includes two nights with breakfast at a partner hotel in Graz, "culinary highlights" at the G‑Class Experience Center, and a welcome dinner in Graz's city centre.
For the Mercedes-Benz Morocco Trip, just six events are planned from October to November. The cost is 14,990 euros (~$17,283) per spot, which includes five nights of accommodation, meals, and a charter flight from Errachidia to Marrakech.
Mercedes is going all-out when it comes to giving its fans a taste of what the brand is about. It goes beyond a booth at an auto show, a brand activation, or a pop-up; granted, you do have to pay a hefty penny to experience these things. Perhaps this could open up opportunities for Mercedes to conduct a "world tour" and allow fans to experience the G-Wagon in different environments around the globe. For instance, I'd like to see a G-Wagon drive near the Arctic Circle, but I guess it all depends on the proximity to a decent hotel.

Ferrari and Hamilton Thought They Were Perfect for Each Other. That Honeymoon Is Over

The latest car news, reviews, and features. When Lewis Hamilton announced he would be leaving Mercedes after 12 seasons in favor of a shot at bringing a championship title to Ferrari, the pair were quickly and loudly dubbed the strongest driver-team duo in Formula 1. For a storied team like Ferrari—shackled by an 18-year World Drivers' Championship drought—the news that the seven-time champ would join the team brought with it an inauguration-like reception. A year before Italy would appoint a new pope, the nation had found faith in a 40-year-old race car driver turning in his Silver Arrow for Rosso Corsa. But the celebrations soured swiftly. Halfway through the 2025 F1 season, Hamilton sits in sixth place in the driver standings behind his former teammate George Russell, who sits pretty in fourth, and his current teammate, Charles Leclerc, who is now fifth. Italy's other hope for the future—18-year-old Bologna-born wunderkind Kimi Antonelli—and Hamilton's replacement at Mercedes trails just behind him in seventh. Getty While the spring brought the promise of speed, including a sprint win in China and a sprint podium in Miami, the first half of the season has been a rude awakening. Throughout the first 14 races of 2025, Hamilton's once-optimistic view of Ferrari has been tested. Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, he said he refuses to not win a championship with the team like former Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. 'If you look at the team over the last 20 years, they've had amazing drivers: Kimi [Raikkonen], Fernando [Alonso], Sebastian [Vettel]—all world champions. However, they didn't win a world championship [at Ferrari]. And for me, I refuse for that to be the case with me.' (Raikkonen did win a title with Ferrari in 2007.) However, an 18th-place sprint qualifying position and a 16th-place starting grid place in the feature race in Spa chipped away at Hamilton's confidence. By Saturday's Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying session—where he failed to make it into Q3 while Leclerc took pole position—his resolve had all but disintegrated. 'I am useless. Absolutely useless,' he said. 'The team has no problem. You can see [Leclerc's] car is on pole. They probably need to change drivers.' The dramatic response echoed Hamilton's comments in April when he said the team bosses were 'not happy' with his performance and that he needed a 'brain transplant' to adapt to the Ferrari SF-25. Getty NurPhoto The prestigious title of 'Ferrari driver,' Hamilton has discovered, means taming something wild. The prancing horse turns out to be less of a polished, well-groomed show horse and more of a mustang, bucking off even the most experienced of drivers. In a sport full of adrenaline junkies, that is part of the appeal: to achieve what few have done before. To tighten the reins and win a championship with the temperamental beast. But to do so requires upending a systemic culture of mistakes and missteps. During the mini-break between Silvertone and Spa, Hamilton claimed to have drafted up documents detailing where the team goes from here and met with Ferrari's chairman, the team CEO, and Ferrari's team principal. The scramble of high-profile meetings made the team dynamic look less collaborative and more desperate for a change of pace. Leclerc, who has been the team's darling since 2019, has trudged through his own trenches at the team—this past weekend included. After securing Ferrari's first pole of the season, the Monegasque was poised for a podium finish. Leclerc crossed the finish line just shy of third place after ranting in a lengthy radio message during Sunday's race: 'This is so incredibly frustrating. We've lost all competitiveness. You just have to listen to me; I would have found a different way of managing those issues. Now it's just undrivable. Undrivable. It's a miracle if we finish on the podium.' Hamilton, in contrast, took the blame for his 12th-place finish: 'Really sorry about this weekend guys, for losing you points.' Following his points-less performance, he insisted he still loves the sport. 'I still love it… I still love the team,' Hamilton said. 'I look forward to coming back [in Zandvoort] … Hopefully I will be back.' Getty As Hamilton attempts to make peace with the career-defining risk he chose, he must also accept his role in steering another future: Carlos Sainz's career path. The former Ferrari driver who signed onto Williams for the 2025 season has only scored 16 points so far this season and is sandwiched between two rookies in 16th place. Sainz dragged his carbon fiber machine into 14th place on Sunday. Hamilton's move may have set off a domino effect in the driver market as seats opened up for rookies, but his and other drivers' insistence on extending their careers in F1 also clogged the pipeline from the junior series to the big leagues. Touted as one of the greatest drivers in the sport's history, Hamilton looked to Ferrari as the natural solution to his eight-time title challenge. 'This is the most positive feeling I've had in a long time,' Hamilton said just six months ago. 'I've always imagined what it would be like sitting in the cockpit surrounded by red.' However, the dream of taming a prancing horse seems to be left somewhere on track in Hungary—just like so many drivers who have looked to Maranello for success. As for Ferrari, the team is left with the question: If Hamilton can't fix them, who can? Got a tip? Email us at tips@

Why the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is a Secret Tax Write-Off

The latest car news, reviews, and features. If the financial alphas of TikTok are to be believed, there's a secret loophole in US tax code that allows you to buy a Mercedes G-Wagon and deduct its cost from your taxes. They're not entirely wrong—let's dive into Section 179, hustle culture, and how the G-Class ended up becoming a status symbol in more ways than one. Really, it's 'G- Wagen ' as in Gelandewagen, which is pretty much just German for 'off-roader.' But colloquially, it's a 'Wagon' stateside. Not everybody driving around in a Merc G is committing tax fraud, but the vehicle's unique combination of specs and appeal does open the door for shady small-biz shenanigans. See, in late 2010, Congress passed the Small Business Jobs Act. It was designed to help small businesses recover from the financial crisis of 2008, and provided business owners with access to lending programs, increased limits on what they could borrow, and tax cuts on essential equipment. A part of that was what's known as Section 179. Section 179 of the IRS's Publication 946 deals specifically with large equipment needed for work. As our Editor-In-Chief, Kyle Cheromcha, breaks it down in the video above, for example, if a farmer needs a $50,000 tractor, but only puts $5,000 down and finances the rest, they can still write down the entire purchase on their taxes in the first year. The spirit of this is so companies can acquire expensive, unique equipment like construction vehicles or restaurant kitchen appliances. But it gets a little murky when it comes to road-going vehicles. A road vehicle can be eligible for this deduction if it's used at least 50% for business, and has a GVWR of between 6,000 and 14,000 pounds. When this rule was minted, that pretty much only included heavy-duty trucks, not luxury vehicles. But of course, the Mercedes G-Class is both. And now that more cars than ever are extremely heavy, and plenty of work trucks are loaded with luxury features, Section 179 is more susceptible to abuse than ever. Check out the video for the full breakdown of how we got here, and whether or not claiming a $150,000 luxury SUV on your taxes is a good idea. Mercedes-Benz set to roll out truck assembly plant in West Africa

The project, formalised through a letter of intent is a tripartite collaboration between the Senegalese government, German automotive giant Mercedes-Benz, and Global Truck Systems (GTS). The announcement came after a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and a Mercedes Trucks delegation led by the group's CEO, Franziska Cusumano. According to a statement from the Senegalese government, the new facility will initially focus on assembling military vehicles for the Senegalese armed forces, before gradually expanding to include civilian trucks and other commercial models. ' An initial assembly line will be operational by the end of 2025. Several hundred jobs will be created during the initial phase, with a target of several thousand in the long term, ' said Jan Weber, Commercial Director of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, in an interview with national broadcaster RTS. Under the agreement, Mercedes-Benz will supply Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits to enable local assembly of various truck models, boosting industrial capacity and reducing dependence on imports. The initiative aligns with Senegal's broader industrialisation strategy aimed at attracting foreign investment, fostering skilled employment, and developing local supply chains in strategic economic sectors. Mercedes Benz deepens Africa presence Mercedes-Benz has been steadily expanding its footprint across Africa, positioning itself as a key player in the continent's rapidly growing automotive and logistics sectors. With demand for commercial vehicles surging and driven by infrastructure projects, urbanisation, and regional trade integration, Africa has become a strategic growth frontier for the German automaker. In North Africa, Mercedes-Benz maintains a solid presence through assembly plants and distribution partnerships in Egypt and Algeria. South Africa, however, serves as the company's primary manufacturing hub on the continent, home to one of its largest assembly facilities outside Germany. Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA), headquartered in Pretoria, oversees this major assembly operation, which employs approximately 300 people. Mercedes-Benz's latest venture into Senegal indicates a strategic push to anchor its operations closer to e merging West African markets. Leveraging Dakar's advantageous position as a logistics hub, the planned truck assembly plant is expected to stimulate ancillary industries, foster technology transfer, and accelerate workforce skills development. " As part of the supply of CKD kits for various Mercedes-Benz trucks, Daimler Truck ensures a reliable supply chain. Comprehensive quality assurance and technology transfer control measures are also implemented." "The objective is to provide high-quality conditions for locally assembled vehicles, including long-term service support. With the commitment of Daimler Truck, the two local partners can create new jobs on site and thus contribute to the country's value creation and economic development." Daimler noted in a statement. As infrastructure development and regional logistics continue to expand, demand for heavy-duty vehicles is projected to rise.
