Starving Children ‘Hunted for Food, US Doctor in Gaza Warns

DaysofPal – A US doctor working in Gaza has delivered a harrowing account of starvation, deadly violence, and the collapse of basic life in the besieged enclave, calling the situation 'absolutely unacceptable' and urging the world to intervene.
Dr. Cooper, who has been in Gaza for only three days, described scenes that he said are beyond imagination, with children as young as five collapsing from hunger.
'I've seen children in the emergency room passing out from lack of food,' he said. 'They are completely famished—those with chronic illnesses, heart conditions, and neurological issues are in life-threatening conditions. This is absolutely unacceptable.'
The doctor said basic food items have become prohibitively expensive, with a kilogram of meat or sugar selling for around \$100. Even medical staff, including pediatricians, are enduring acute hunger, surviving on minimal meals for days.
'People are saying that there's food here, why the price is so incredibly high and there's such a scarcity of food. This is just absolutely unacceptable. Definitely not true,' Dr. Cooper said. 'I've seen starving children with my own eyes.'
He extended a direct challenge to Steve Witkoff, the representative of former U.S. President Donald Trump, to come to Gaza and witness the reality himself.
'I would like to invite apparently Mr. Witcoff is going to be here not too far away…I would invite him to come here and see for himself what's happening here,' he said.
'I'll meet him in person and I'll show him into the hospital. I would say this is so unacceptable in this day and age… I've seen that also with my own eyes.'
Dr. Cooper also recounted the human toll of Israel's ongoing military offensive, including an 11-year-old boy who was paralyzed by a gunshot while searching for food for his family.
'The trauma bay is full of casualties… I got blood on my shoes right now because we walked through the trauma bay,' he said. 'Why 11- and 12-year-old boys are being shot with these powerful weapons is beyond comprehension. And that also drives the starvation because these kids are going to get food for their families. This is barbaric. It's a crime scene.'
Gaza's hunger crisis is worsening at a catastrophic pace. Since October 2023, at least 163 people—93 of them children—have died from starvation, according to health officials. Israel's 18-year blockade and the total closure of border crossings since March 2 have pushed food supplies to the brink.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has warned that famine is 'playing out in real time' in Gaza, while the enclave's health system has nearly collapsed under the strain of mass malnutrition, contaminated water, and untreated diseases.
Dr. Cooper said malnourished children are dying not just from hunger, but from waterborne illnesses and infections that cannot be treated.
'Undernourished and lacking nutrients, vitamins… They're also thirsty. There's no water. And the water they have is of poor quality. There's a massive amount of diarrhea, fevers, infectious diseases—some we can't even diagnose because we lack medical facilities,' he said.
He gave one of his most chilling warnings about children being targeted while searching for food.
'Young teenagers are going to fetch food and are being shot at. They're being literally hunted down. They're hunted dead,' he said.
Despite repeated international calls for a ceasefire, Israel's assault continues. Gaza health authorities report more than 60,000 Palestinians killed since October, most of them women and children.

UNICEF Reports 28 Children Killed Daily from Bombings, Hunger, and Illness

DaysofPal – The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) sounded the alarm on Monday over the devastating toll Israel's genocide on Gaza is taking on children, revealing that an average of 28 children are being killed every single day, whether by bombs, hunger, or untreated illness, in a crisis that has now dragged on for more than 660 days. 'In Gaza, an average of 28 children are killed every day, the equivalent of an entire classroom,' UNICEF said in a statement, underscoring the lethal combination of airstrikes, malnutrition, and the total collapse of services in the besieged enclave. The agency emphasized that Gaza's children urgently require food, clean water, medicine, and, most importantly, a ceasefire. The warning comes as Gaza continues to suffer under what multiple UN agencies have described as a man-made humanitarian catastrophe, driven by relentless bombing and a blockade that has gutted access to basic life-saving aid. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, echoed UNICEF's message, warning that Gaza's starvation crisis has reached levels that are 'heartbreaking and unbearable.' In his remarks on Monday, Türk described the ongoing denial of food to civilians as not only morally intolerable but also a potential war crime and a crime against humanity. 'Images of starving people in Gaza are an insult to all of humanity,' he said. 'Saving lives must be everyone's priority.' Türk called on Israel to lift the restrictions on aid entering the Gaza Strip, describing the current level of access as 'far less than what is needed.' He urged that humanitarian supplies be allowed in 'immediately, without hindrance,' warning that the ongoing obstruction was exacerbating suffering and costing lives. Under Israel's ongoing siege, food, water, and medicine have become dangerously scarce, especially in northern and central Gaza, where famine-like conditions have been reported. Aid convoys are tightly controlled or blocked altogether, and distribution networks have collapsed under repeated attacks. While Türk reiterated his call for the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza, he made no mention of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners detained in Israeli jails, many of whom are subjected to prolonged detention without charge and systematic torture, a growing concern among international rights organizations. UN: Over 1,500 Gaza Civilians Killed at Aid Points and Along Food Routes

DaysofPal – The United Nations warned Monday that more than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since May while attempting to obtain food, a staggering toll linked to what it described as Israel's militarization of aid routes and distribution areas in the besieged enclave. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said civilians in Gaza are being shot at and killed while trying to reach desperately needed food and assistance. 'Palestinians trying to obtain food are being killed,' he stated, noting that many of these deaths occurred along aid routes coordinated by the United Nations and its partners. Haq emphasized that the humanitarian situation remains catastrophic, as UN agencies and aid groups have been unable to meet the population's basic shelter needs. No materials for shelter construction have been permitted into Gaza since March, leaving tens of thousands without protection amid bombardment and displacement. 'Some food supplies were allowed in last week,' Haq acknowledged, 'but they did not meet Gaza's needs, and hunger, especially among children, has reached dire levels.' The UN reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire and demanded unrestricted humanitarian and commercial access to the Gaza Strip. Gaza's Ministry of Health confirmed Saturday that 1,422 people have been killed and over 10,000 wounded by Israeli fire at aid distribution points since May 27. The ministry added that more than 150 others have died from hunger, malnutrition, or the effects of Israel's ongoing blockade and what it called a deliberate 'war of starvation.' Despite mounting global pressure, aid remains critically bottlenecked. Following Israel's destruction of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, trucks entering from Egypt are rerouted to Kerem Shalom, where they undergo lengthy Israeli inspections. Most are held up for days or denied entry altogether. On July 26, Israel's state broadcaster revealed that the Israeli occupation forces had destroyed food, water, and medical supplies from over 1,000 aid trucks that were left to rot at Kerem Shalom after being barred from reaching Gaza. According to Gaza's government media office, since July 27 Israel has allowed only 674 aid trucks to enter the Strip, just 14% of the minimum daily requirement of 600 trucks needed to sustain the population. Hamas Official: Netanyahu's Blockade Starving Both Captives and Civilians

DaysofPal- Senior Hamas official Ezzat al-Resheq has blamed the Israeli government for the growing hunger among Israeli captives held in Gaza, saying that they are suffering the consequences of the same siege imposed on the Palestinian people. 'We regret that Israeli captives are suffering from hunger, but Netanyahu and his Nazi government bear full responsibility for this,' Resheq wrote on his Telegram channel on Sunday. 'Netanyahu and his government have waged a war of starvation and thirst against our people, and now even their own captives are suffering the consequences,' he added. The senior official emphasized that the Palestinian resistance treats captives in line with moral and religious values, sharing with them whatever limited resources are available. 'Our resistance fighters treat captives by the teachings of their religion and their human values, sharing with them the food and drink available, as they all endure the same conditions alongside the rest of our people,' Resheq said. He pointed to previous prisoner exchanges to underscore the resistance's track record. 'The entire world witnessed during previous prisoner exchanges how the released captives appeared, healthy both physically and mentally,' he said. 'Today, however, they endure hunger, emaciation, and weight loss, just as their captors suffer. They all share the same harsh conditions alongside our besieged people in the Gaza Strip,' Resheq added. He stressed that it is Israel's siege that has caused this outcome. 'Netanyahu's unjust siege against our Palestinian people has also affected Israeli captives, leaving them to endure the same cruel deprivation of food,' he said. In recent days, Palestinian resistance groups have released videos of Israeli captives Evitar David and Rom Barslavsky, showing both men visibly weakened and suffering from severe weight loss as a result of Israel's continued starvation campaign in Gaza. The resistance has stated its willingness to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to deliver food and medicine to the Israeli captives, but only if Israel permanently opens humanitarian corridors and suspends airstrikes during the handover. Since launching its genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023, Israel has imposed a comprehensive siege on the territory. On March 2, the blockade was tightened further with the closure of all crossings to humanitarian, medical, and relief aid, fueling a famine that has reached catastrophic levels.
