Iconic singer pulls out of final Black Sabbath show after scheduling conflict
American rock icon Wolfgang Van Halen has been forced to pull out of a performance at Black Sabbath's farewell show due to a scheduling conflict.
The multi-instrumentalist had been included as a part of the original line-up for Sabbath's 'Back to the Beginning' concert.
Playing in Villa Park, Birmingham on July 5, the event reunites the original Black Sabbath line-up of Ozzy Osbourne, Tommy Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for their final performance together.
Joining the Brum-based band at the sold-out event are Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira, Halestorm, Alice in Chains, Lamb of God, Mastodon and Rival Sons.
Additional performances will include fellow rock legends Tom Morello, Fred Durst, Steven Tyler and Soundgarden.
However, one music giant who won't be joining Sabbath is 34-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen, who has had to back out due to a scheduling conflict with another major rock tour.
In an interview with Detroit's Meltdown on 101 WRIF, Wolfgang explained what had happened.
'I, unfortunately, had to back out because the Creed tour starts the day after, and I wouldn't be able to pull it off — unfortunately. I'm very excited to watch it, but I unfortunately had to back out,' he said.
Instead, Wolfgang and his band – American rockers Mammoth – will support Creed from July 9 in Lexington, Kentucky.
Wolfgang was then asked which of the band's guitarists was his favourite.
He replied: 'I'm really bad at picking, 'cause that almost implies you don't like another one in comparison.
'And I feel like Randy [Rhoads] was amazing, but you can't not give cred to [Black Sabbath's] Tony [Iommi] being the legend and groundbreaking genre creator he was — and is. So I love 'em all. That's not the answer you wanna hear.'
Wolfgang is himself the son of one of the greatest rock stars and guitarists of all time – Eddie Van Halen, who died from cancer in October 2020.
Born in 1991 to Eddie and Food Network star Valerie Bertinelli, Wolfgang went on to follow his father's footsteps, performing as Van Halen's bassist between 2007 and 2020.
He also performed with the heavy metal band Tremonti from 2012 to 2016, and founded his own group – Mammoth – in 2015.
Asked if his dad had taught him any 'tricks,' Wolfgang replied: 'He would be the one to tell you he was a really bad teacher. I think just being around it and being in the environment, I'm just more interested in it. By osmosis, so to speak.'
Wolfgang may not be able to make his performance at Black Sabbath's farewell show, but the Paranoid hitmakers will have plenty of support from their peers in the rock world.
Hosted by Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa, the show will feature performances from a supergroup of musicians, including Guns N' Roses, Tool, and Rival Sons.
Those hoping to catch a glimpse of history can also tune in via a global livestream, beginning at 3pm BST on July 5.
Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy announced the gig on February 5, saying: 'It's my time to go Back to the Beginning… time for me to give back to the place where I was born. More Trending
'How blessed am I to do it with the help of people whom I love. Birmingham is the true home of metal. Birmingham Forever.'
This will likely mark the Prince of Darkness's final performance, following his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2020.
Speaking on Radio X Classic Rock, wife Sharon said: 'It's very emotional but very happy. It's time for Ozzy to say goodnight to everybody, and what better way to do it than to do it surrounded by your friends, your family, and back to the beginning – the place where he was born – in Aston.'

Fantasy novel reimagines Welsh mythology for young readers
The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire by Cardiff-based writer Anna Fiteni will be published on August 28 and is set in a Welsh mining village in the 1800s. Inspired by Welsh mythology and written with elements of the Welsh language, the story follows Sabrina Parry in a quest to save her sister Ceridwen. Ms Fiteni said: "The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire is, ultimately, a love letter to growing up weird, classic guyliner-wearing YA romantic heroes, sisters, and my home, Wales. "I was inspired by a lot of other stories and films while writing, like Pan's Labyrinth, Into the Woods and Hadestown, and beloved YA novels like The Cruel Prince and An Enchantment of Ravens. "Mix those with a childhood fascination with Peter Pan and the illustrations of Cicely Mary Barker, and the lasting memory of a school trip down a coal mine, and here we are." Ms Fiteni wrote the book while in her final year of studying in England and is shaped by Wales. "I was lucky to be exposed to a fair bit of Welsh mythology when I was young. This isn't the case for every Welsh child," she said. "Like the language, Welsh history and stories aren't always accessible. I noticed this particularly in the fantasy books I read. "We have a wealth of weird and wonderful myths in Wales, but I rarely saw them put to paper. It was rarer still to see that writing done by a Welsh author."

American tries fish and chips for the first time and his reaction is priceless
An American living in the UK sought out his first fish and chip serving, and while he loved his battered haddock and chips, he heaped praise on one unlikely sauce Fish and chips in Britain is a culinary delight loved by millions. And it seems our American are friends are darting across the pond to sample the delicious dish for themselves. An American influencer, now living in the UK, went to the ever-popular seaside town of Brighton in West Sussex in search of "good" fish and chips. He was instead left flabbergasted with the taste of this one particular dip that's perhaps not so popular in southern England. Tiktok user Red Buss Russ, using the social handle of @redbussruss has 15.4k followers and almost 600k likes and has made a name for himself as he shares his opinions after trying British staples. In the one-minute video, Russ films himself with his partner sitting outside a fish and chip parlour where he opted for a battered haddock with chips, complete with tartare sauce. His partner went for a meat pie with thick gravy and chips. After the pair had been served, Russ was shocked about the size of the fish, describing it as 'massive'. He said: "It smelled really good... And its taste, dang! That was some good fish. It was a strong blend of flavours, but it was very satisfying and crispy. The haddock tasted amazing. The chips were nicely done, too." Full of compliments, it appeared Russ was well and truly bowled over by his first taste of the British delicacy. He dubbed his experience a generous nine out of 10 - but one sauce caught him completely off-guard. That was his partner's gravy. "My god, it was the best gravy I'd ever tasted in my life... It's not an exaggeration," he said. Gravy is not an uncommon sauce to dip chips into, but it's more popular in northern towns and cities. Some people opt to drench their entire dish in the meaty condiment, while others prefer it on the side. Typically associated with a roast dinner, gravy has pushed through the ranks in recent decades with fast-food giant KFC offering it as a side dish to customers. Russ concluded his trip to Brighton with a Mr Whippy and a chocolate flake, which he gave a 10 out of 10. Coming from the States, Russ' videos focus on trying British delicacies, from the famous M&S sandwiches to Greggs pastries and other supermarket goodies. His latest video trying the fish and chips has accumulated 16.1k views at the time of publishing. Similarly, in another story published by the Mirror, Russ tried Gregg's cheese and onion bake, chicken bake, steak bake and the iconic sausage roll for the first time. Russ described its "nice, creamy filling" and hailed the "bread" for being "nice and flaky." He said: "I really enjoyed that, it was decently filling," giving it a solid seven out of 10.
