Brendan Rodgers in coded Celtic transfer message as boss can't say what 'I would like to'
Brendan Rodgers admits Celtic's Champions League hopes are in the balance because the under-fire Parkhead board failed to heed his warnings.
Blunt Hoops are facing the nightmare scenario of having to win in Kazakhstan on Tuesday after drawing a blank against stubborn Kairat Almaty.
Celtic let rip at chief exec Michael Nicolson and chairman Peter Lawwell and chanted 'Sack the Board' after failure to land quality replacements for Kyogo, Nicolas Kuhn and injured Jota over the summer.
Rodgers is determined to come through in the return leg but he admitted he feared the club's shambolic transfer window could come back to bite them.
He said: 'I think it was pretty clear. I think you don't need to look at the future too far.
'You know these games are tough games and you know that you want to get your best players in and have players in as quick as you can to tackle these sorts of situations.
'It is what it is. I just have to accept where it's at.
'I think that we need to improve the squad. There was clarity around that for a long time.
'We see that. I think supporters see that. We need to improve.
'This is a performance club. This is a club that's to perform. And that starts on the field.
'And you do that with getting the very best players you possibly can to allow you to perform.
'It's getting performance on the pitch, the style and the type of football excites supporters.
'That's what this club is used to. Hopefully between now and the end of the window, we can get that. And then that will support us going through the rest of the season.'
Hoops fans aimed their anger at the directors box and Rodgers said: 'What I do know is, over many years, 'sack the board' usually means 'sack the manager'.
'It's normally the manager that goes when that starts to be sung.
"I can only really look at the players we have here, and the performance. We've known for a long time what we've needed as a squad, so I don't want to go into that.'
Rodgers has been forced to front up over transfer failure but the board have remained silent.
But he said: 'I accept the responsibility as the manager of the club. I can't tell you anything which I would like to, but there's only so many ways I can dress up that we haven't got any players in.
'But I accept responsibility to stand here and tell you where we're at. The privilege is mine to be here. If it's my role to do that, then of course I will do that.'
Rodgers is convinced Celts can still reach the group stages despite the dismal first leg.
He said: 'We're disappointed with the result and first-half performance. We didn't start with the intent and mentality we wanted to. We were quite passive.
"The second half was better, we started well but couldn't find the breakthrough in the final third of the pitch.
"At the end of the game, we have to shuffle things about to try and make it work.
'But the players' endeavour in the second half was really good. But at this level, it's more than that.
"Of course, you want to take the advantage. I've been here before, having drawn 0-0 in a qualification game – against Rosenborg, a very good team. We went there to qualify and we did, played very well and won.
"There's no doubt we can go there and win. It's still very much in the balance.'
Alistair Johnston was carried off with a hamstring injury and misfiring striker Adam Idah was hooked at half-time.
Rodgers said: 'There's no rocket science in it. It's all hard work. It's all preparation.
'That will obviously lead to confidence, and then you'll obviously succeed as a player from that. I didn't quite go for him in the first half. I wanted a little bit more activity in and around the box, because I felt we could get up there. 'Adam's a good boy. He's an honest boy. He hasn't quite started how he would have liked.
'But in games like these here, I can't afford to wait. And that's why I made the change at half time.'

Russell Martin slaughtered for ‘incomprehensible choices' over Rangers tactics & line-up including Nico Raskin decision
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS manager Russell Martin has been slammed for making 'incomprehensible choices' in his team by top Belgian boss Hans Vanhaezebrouck after their shock Champions League defeat. The Ibrox side will travel to Belgium next week and have to overcome a two-goal deficit after a disastrous start to the play-offs this week, where they were 3-0 down after 20 minutes before grabbing a second half consolation. 3 Russell Martin's tactics have been called into question by a Belgian coach/pundit Credit: Willie Vass 3 In particular, his use of Nicolas Raskin against Club Brugge Credit: PA New Ibrox boss Martin has come under fire already after a disappointing start to his tenure with Rangers being held to draws in the Premiership by Motherwell and Dundee. And former Anderlecht, Gent and Genk boss-turned Belgian TV pundit Vanhaezebrouck was unimpressed with Martin's tactics and team selection. He pointed out: "Rangers manager Russell Martin made many strange choices for me. "He put Jayden Meghoma straight in at left-back after just two days at the club and then moved Max Aarons to right-back, even though James Tavernier is playing better. "And I didn't understand their midfield at all. "Nicolas Raskin was played too deep and Joe Rothwell too high. That doesn't work. "And without the injured Cyriel Dessers, Rangers were much weaker up front. "Rangers defended set pieces with a mixture of man-marking and zonal marking and I knew there was something there for Club Brugge. They executed their plan superbly. "But it's only 3-1 and it's football, so anything could happen in the second leg. "Look at Club Brugge's home game against RB Salzburg - they missed a truckload of chances and were still 2-0 down at half time. Rangers MISS OUT on top striker target as failures of loan strategy exposed "The tie is still at half time. "I would say Club Brugge have a 90 per cent chance of progressing, but would point out that Rangers had a lot of chances too so it's not a formality." 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

What did the pundits say about Celtic's draw with Kairat?
Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady on BBC SportsoundIt was a gilt-edged opportunity late on for [Daizen] Maeda. His finishing has always slightly been on the scruffy side. You wouldn't say he's a top, top finisher, he can have three chances and score one of had a huge share of possession but didn't do enough with it. When they got to the final third, too many times the final ball wasn't good Scotland forward James McFadden on BBC's Champions League highlights showThere will be loads loads of Celtic fans saying they could see this coming. I know it's not a defeat, but when you lose players like Kuhn, Kyogo, [injured] Jota, and you've not brought in replacements, the Celtic fans had a fear this was coming and the board were waiting to see if they were going to be in CL or me, they should always be doing their business to make sure they've got the players to get the team ready and win this game. There's a lot of work still to be done for Celtic on and off the Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner on BBC SportsoundI am concerned, I thought they would win this game and take a lead to Kazakhstan. They will need to perform really, really well out was very disappointing that Celtic didn't create enough. Second half was better, first half was really poor, failing to put the defence under any real Scotland winger Pat Nevin on BBC's Champions League highlights showIt was painful in many ways. It's 46 games since Celtic last failed to score at Celtic Park. They've scored against Bayern Munich, loads of very good teams. It just shows you this was a really dull fans were disappointed, understandably so. There's a lack of creativity there and it Celtic defender Johan Mjallby on TNT SportsCeltic didn't create enough clear-cut chances to say they should have won the game, despite having more possession. Kairat defended so well Rodgers has clearly said this group, playing these two games, are good can take confidence from some of their away games last season - not against Dortmund - and maybe Rodgers needs to be a bit more pragmatic for it.
