2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed First Look: Fewer Cylinders, But WAY More Power(!)

Motor Trend2 days ago

The Bentley Bentayga Speed once reigned as the ultimate blend of performance and plushness in the SUV world, thanks to its mighty W-12 engine. With a thunderous 626 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, this luxurious beast launched from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, and blitzed through the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds at 120.7 mph in our testing. But with Crewe pulling the plug on the W-12, the mightiest Bentayga's heart lost four cylinders—and with them, a bit of the SUV's bite.

But the Speed name is back—and it's coming in hot. Enter the 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed, now packing a revamped 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that cranks out 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. That's a serious bump—99 more horses and 96 extra lb-ft over the V-8 S, and, you'll note, beyond the old W-12's output—making this the most powerful Bentayga ever to wear the winged badge.
Power isn't the only thing getting a boost. Bentley gave the 2026 Bentayga Speed a round of upgrades, including fresh wheel designs and new interior touches.
Drift Your Bentayga... ?
With its return, the 2026 Bentayga Speed officially takes the crown as the flagship of the Bentayga lineup. Below it, the rest of the Bentayga range soldiers on with the 542-hp, 568-lb-ft twin-turbo V-8, or the 3.0-liter V-6 plug-in hybrid, which delivers a respectable 456 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.
Bentley claims the 2026 Bentayga Speed will hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds—but we're calling that conservative. After all, they quoted 3.9 seconds for the old W-12, and we clocked it at 3.1 seconds. Based on the numbers, we expect the new Speed to rip from 0 to 60 in the 2.8 to 3.0-second range—a bonkers stat for a luxury SUV tipping the scales at over 5,000 pounds.
To help rein in all that fury, the Speed can be equipped with massive carbon-ceramic brakes tucked behind newly designed—and a first for Bentley—23-inch wheels.
The Bentayga Speed doesn't just move like a rocket—it sounds the part, too. A standard sport exhaust system gives the V-8 a richer, more aggressive growl, piped through a set of dual tailpipes flanking the rear diffuser. For those craving an even deeper, more visceral soundtrack, Bentley offers an optional titanium Akrapovic exhaust, complete with distinctive quad tailpipes.
To make the most of that snarling exhaust, the new Sport mode cranks things up a notch—stiffening the suspension by 15 percent compared to Comfort and Bentley modes. Bentley says it also sharpens steering response and deepens the driver's connection, making the big SUV feel more dialed-in and dynamic than ever.
Drifting probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a Bentayga—but the Speed might change that. According to Bentley, toggle the ESC to Dynamic and engage Sport mode, and the big brute will let loose with 'exhilarating drift angles' and power-on oversteer. Torque vectoring sharpens turn-in and puts down more grunt on corner exits, dialing up the agility. We'll have to see this in action—for science, of course—when we get behind the wheel soon.
Rounding out the mechanical upgrades, the Bentayga Speed now features four-wheel steering—a welcome addition that tightens up low-speed maneuvering and shrinks the turning circle, making this big SUV feel far nimbler in tight spaces.
Spot the Differences
Cosmetically, the 2026 Bentayga Speed keeps things subtle but classy. Sharp-eyed fans will notice the dark tint inside the headlights and smoked gray taillights, while the Speed chrome badges along the sides proudly announce you're in the lineup's top dog. What stands out is the contrasting pinstripes wrapping the lower body, which can be matched to the color of the carbon-ceramic brakes for a touch of extra flair.
Inside, the updates are subtle. Speed emblems grace the backrests, and you can customize the interior trim to match the exterior pinstripes for a splash of coordinated style. Quilted leather wraps the cabin in luxury, with generous coverage on the seats and door panels.
We'll have a chance to test the new 2026 Bentley Bentayga soon. Stay tuned for our review.

Trump's steel tariff raise misses real target, says EU

PARIS — President Donald Trump's decision to double steel import tariffs to 50 percent is a misguided blow to America's allies, the European Union's chief trade negotiator said Wednesday, warning the real threat lies in global overcapacity rather than in the bloc's steel exports. Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, speaking after talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Paris, said that Europe was not the source of the problem — which is global overcapacity — that the Trump administration was seeking to address with the tariff. 'We are not bringing problems,' Šefčovič told reporters, pointing to the fact that the EU exports only about 4 million tons of highly specialized steel. Advertisement 'Let's not target each other, but let's work together [on] how to address this global overcapacity issue,' he said.

3 surprising market winners in 2025

Investors brave enough to peek at their account statements know that it's been a rocky 2025. Even before tariff-related volatility, DeepSeek AI's launch clouded the major technology theme that powered the market in 2023 and 2024, as AI stocks entered a bear market in March. But there have been equity gains to be had in 2025. When I look at year-to-date returns across indexes, I notice a few surprising stars: European stocks, Latin America, and real estate investment trusts. The common thread that connects the three? All had been underperformers in prior years. European stocks have been made great again Morningstar's European stock index is riding high this year, as the macroeconomic environment has been improving. The financial-services sector, in particular, is a key beneficiary. Then there's Germany's newfound interest in deficit spending and the continent's focus on military self-sufficiency, spurred by the Donald Trump administration. US tariff announcements caused sharp selloffs in Europe, but the recovery has been V-shaped. A weakening US dollar has magnified European equity gains for unhedged US investors. It doesn't hurt that the European Central Bank and the Bank of England have actually been cutting interest rates. My research and investment colleagues have called Europe 'the most attractive developed-markets region globally,' making European stocks worthy of inclusion in a diversified portfolio. Latin America: Can the revival last? South of the US border, stocks are rallying. Morningstar's Latin American equities index is up more than 22% so far in 2025, thanks to Brazil, Mexico, and the smaller markets of Colombia and Chile. Here, too, a weakening dollar has boosted equity returns for unhedged US investors. This marks quite a turnaround from losses of more than 25% in US dollar terms in 2024. Brazil, for its part, faces serious fiscal challenges. In Mexico, sentiment was dented by election results on both sides of the border. Coming into the year, my colleagues on Morningstar's research and investment team identified Brazil as the highest potential global equity market for the coming 10 years. Latin American stocks are volatile but could hold more upside. REITs, especially those outside the US, outperform Real estate investment trusts are also up double digits this year outside the US. Property sectors in many geographies are vibrant, bolstered by low or falling interest rates. What about the US? The Morningstar US REIT Index is well behind the Morningstar Global Markets ex-US REIT Index in 2025, but it's in positive territory, ahead of the broad US equity market. US interest rates that appear to be staying higher for longer are seen as a negative for real estate. That said, REIT yields are attractive, and property is a 'real asset' that can act as an inflation hedge. Diversification assures exposure to unloved asset classes US mega-cap technology-oriented stocks did so well for so long that many investors thought they were the only game in town. Coming into 2025, it was hard to envision how the Magnificent Seven could ever be knocked off their perch. The rise of artificial intelligence, widely viewed as 'bigger than the internet,' seemed inexorable. No one saw DeepSeek AI coming, and few predicted the degree to which tariffs would disrupt. Gravity is a powerful force in investing, too. US stocks, especially on the growth side of the market, posted returns in 2023 and 2024 that far exceeded their historical levels. Their losses in 2025 can be seen as a reversion to the mean, or a return to long-term averages. The surprising winners of 2025 show that investment performance is dynamic. Contrarian bets can be profitable, though they can also take time to pay off. Investors who diversify by geography, style, and market capitalization are also well placed to benefit from leadership change. ___ This article was provided to The Associated Press by Morningstar. Weird Elantra N Sales Surge Likely Isn't a Sport Sedan Comeback

Popularity for the humble sedan has faltered over the years, as buyers turn to more practical, higher-riding crossovers. Likewise, affordable performance cars aren't nearly as popular as they were, say, 20 years ago. That's why we're so surprised to hear the Hyundai Elantra N , a sporty sedan, just had its best sales month ever. Sadly, it's likely not a big a deal as you think. Hyundai reported May sales numbers this week, highlighting a massive 141-percent increase in Elantra N sales—the best single month for the trim since its introduction in 2021. While the company doesn't break down units sold by trim, the N's sales milestone comes as part of a 24-percent increase in sales for the Elantra overall, with 15,741 units sold. Don't get us wrong, the Elantra N is an excellent car. It punches above its weight, offering similar performance and smiles to cars that cost five figures more . But a 141-percent jump is an anomaly to big to be explained by enthusiast demand. The real reason behind the spike? It's likely due to the car's refresh, which occurred in early 2024 . When a car is replaced or refreshed, its assembly plant has to be shut down to retool for new body panels and other updates. The pause in production means dealers aren't receiving as many units, which leads to a temporary sales slump. That's what likely happened here. Dealers probably weren't able to sell many Elantra Ns last May simply because they didn't have any in stock. So comparatively, sales jumped in 2025, when inventory normalized. The addition of an automatic transmission also likely helped. That's just a theory, of course. We've reached out to Hyundai for a more concrete explanation. We'll be sure to update this article when we hear back. Either way, for the Elantra N to have its best sales month ever in 2025, four years after it went on sale, is impressive. Enthusiast-focused cars usually have the opposite occur, with the biggest sales happening at the beginning of the lifecycle. This milestone is further proof people still want affordable, fun sedans.
