Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas joins Pumas in Mexico after some advice from Ramos and Herrera

MEXICO CITY (AP) — When former Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas got an offer to play in Mexico for UNAM Pumas, he knew who to ask for advice.
The Costa Rica goalkeeper called his ex-Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos, as well as Costa Rica coach Miguel Herrera, before he eventually agreed to join Pumas in the top-tier Liga MX on a reported one-year contract. The move follows a six-month stint in Argentina with Newell's Old Boys.
The 38-year-old Navas was introduced on Thursday as the Mexican side revamps its roster to try to end a 14-year spell without winning a league title.
'I'm here eager to give my all, to push myself, and to be on the pitch playing at my best,' Navas said. 'I have the mentality to make history, to be able to win a title. I believe we can achieve those goals by working with humility.'
No details were given but Newell's Old Boys said it will receive $2 million as part of the deal.
Ramos on Mexico
Navas and Ramos played together for five seasons with Madrid, winning three Champions League titles. The pair also joined forces at Paris Saint-Germain where they were part of the team that won the Ligue 1 title in 2022.
The 39-year-old Ramos signed with Mexican team Monterrey earlier this year.
'Sergio told me a little about his experience in Mexico. I know James (Rodriguez) is also here and playing at a high level,' Navas said at a press conference. 'Liga MX is growing and is very competitive, with a very good infrastructure, and I thought I'd come to a club where we can compete for titles.'
James Rodriguez, who played with Navas and Ramos for four seasons with Madrid, also plays in Mexico with Leon.
Pumas had already bought Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey, Colombian left back Alvaro Angulo and Ecuador midfielder Pedro Vite.

Navas also called Herrera, who had coached six first division teams in Mexico before he was hired as coach of the Costa Rica men's national team as it attempts to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
'I spoke with Miguel because he knows the league and the club well, and he told me I should sign without a doubt,' Navas said. 'I'm joining a big club, and having him in the national team helps you make these decisions.'
Navas also made the decision to move closer to Central America because his national team has World Cup qualifying games, starting in September, with 'Los Ticos' in Group C with Honduras, Haiti and Nicaragua.

Joc Pederson expected back in Rangers lineup Sunday after missing 52 games with broken hand

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joc Pederson is expected to be back in the Texas Rangers lineup Sunday after missing 52 games because of a broken right hand. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said before Saturday night's game against Atlanta that Pederson would be activated from the injured list before the series finale and be the designated hitter Sunday against the Braves. Pederson was already back in the Texas clubhouse after two rehab games with Triple-A Round Rock. 'Got a lot of swings on live pitching. He's counting those as game at-bats, he said he had 18 of them,' Bochy said. 'Anyway, with a couple of games there, he said he felt comfortable, saw the ball well, hand feels good, so we think he's ready to go.' Pederson hit .131 with two home runs and six RBIs in his first 46 games with the Rangers after signing a $37 million, two-year contract during free agency in December. The 33-year-old and two-time World Series champion was at .052 through 19 games after going through an 0-for-41 slump. He suffered the broken hand May 24 when he was hit by a pitch, an 87.5 mph cutter from Chicago White Sox right-hander Bryse Wilson. Pederson has made 36 of his 38 starts at DH, and two at first base. Bochy said he will primarily be the DH when he rejoins the team. After being part of the Los Angeles Dodgers' World Series title played at Globe Life Field to end the pandemic-impacted 2020 season, Pederson was with the Braves for their championship the following year. ___ AP MLB:

Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick returns from injured list after dealing with hamstring issue

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick returned from the injured list Saturday after recovering from a left hamstring issue. Frelick was leading off and playing right field for the Brewers against the Miami Marlins. The Brewers made room for him by optioning infielder Tyler Black to Triple-A Nashville. The 25-year-old Frelick is batting .294 with a .354 on-base percentage, .404 slugging percentage, seven homers, 39 RBIs and 17 steals in 93 games. He went on the injured list after hurting his hamstring while making a sliding catch in the Brewers' last game before the All-Star break. 'What he brings to the table is special,' Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. Black, who turned 25 on Saturday, went 2 of 6 with a pair of walks and an RBI in three games with Milwaukee. He has batted .242 with a .359 on-base percentage, three homers, 22 RBIs and five steals in 34 minor league games. Georgia teen Hamilton Coleman wins US Junior Amateur

DALLAS (AP) — Hamilton Coleman made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 35th hole to hold on for a 2-and-1 victory Saturday over Minh Nguyen of Vietnam in the U.S. Junior Amateur. The victory sends the 17-year-old Coleman, from Augusta, Georgia, to the U.S. Open next year at Shinnecock Hills. Coleman, who plans to play college golf at Georgia, never trailed in the 36-hole match at Trinity Forest. But it nearly went the distance because of the relentless play of Nguyen, who has committed to play at Oregon State. Coleman went 5 up through 12 holes in the morning 18 holes, only for Nguyen to win three of the next four holes. Coleman took a 3-up lead into the afternoon and was 4 up with 11 holes to play when Nguyen again rallied. 'I knew I couldn't ease my way into winning. I had to keep hitting quality shots,' Coleman said. 'It got a little tight there, but I never lost faith. I told my caddie I was nervous but not scared. I was proud of that.' Coleman was clinging to a 1-up lead with four holes to play. Nguyen twice had birdie chances from the 12-foot range to square the match, narrowly missing both times. The Georgia teen then closed him out with a birdie on the 99-yard 17th hole. The runner-up finish means Nguyen is now exempt from qualifying for the U.S. Amateur next month at Olympic Club. ___ AP golf:
