Russia says it captures three more settlements in east Ukraine
Russian troops advancing slowly on the eastern front of the war in Ukraine have captured two settlements in Donetsk region as well as one in Ukraine's northern region of Sumy, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Saturday (May 24, 2025).
Since their failed advance on the capital Kyiv in the first weeks of the war, Russian forces have focused on capturing the Donbas in the east, made up of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
In recent months, Moscow has also tried to advance in Sumy region, particularly after Russia's military said it had ousted Ukrainian troops from the Russian border region of Kursk.
A Russian Defence Ministry statement said its forces had captured the village of Stupochky in Donetsk region, east of Kostiantynivka, a town under recent Russian pressure.
It also said it had taken control of Otradne, a village further west along the 1,000-km front and announced the capture of Loknya, a village inside the Russian border in Sumy region.
The general staff of Ukraine's military acknowledged no such losses, referring to Otradne as one of several towns where Ukrainian troops had halted 18 frontline Russian attacks. It referred to Stupochky earlier this week as part of an area under Russian attack.
For months, Ukraine has reported attempts by Russian forces to occupy areas of Sumy region, but has never acknowledged the capture of any of them.
Reuters could not independently verify battlefield accounts from either side.
Ukraine's popular DeepState military blog, which uses open source reports, said Russian forces had for the first time "been able to take up positions" along a line of border villages.
Russia's Defence Ministry on Friday (May 23, 2025) announced the capture of Radkivka, a village outside the northeastern city of Kupiansk, which has been under pressure for months.
On Saturday (May 24, 2025), Kupiansk Mayor Andrii Besedin said the attacks were taking a toll, including two city workers killed on Friday (May 23, 2025).
"We are seeing awful losses among our people, our colleagues who give their lives so the city can go on living," Mr. Besedin told national television. "Sadly, as of now, the city is 90% destroyed."

Reports highlight enhanced counter-terrorism actions and strategic border operations undertaken to protect internal security. Challenges for India's defence sector Despite notable gains, India's sector still faces major hurdles. These include quality control, delays in project execution, limited R&D spending, and a need for deeper integration between defence PSUs and private industry. India also remains dependent on foreign technology for jet engines, stealth systems, and advanced sensors. Additionally, while defence indigenisation has increased in scale, true technological self-reliance will require consistent investment in research, talent retention, and long-term strategic planning. 4-Day Closed-Door Talks On India-US Trade Deal Conclude. What Was Discussed
New Delhi: Significant progress was made in the latest round of talks between India and the United States over a possible interim trade deal expected within weeks - one that aims to boost the annual bilateral trade between the two largest democracies from the current $190 billion to a whopping $500 billion by 2030. A team of top American negotiators held closed-door meetings with their Indian counterparts in New Delhi over four days, concluding on Tuesday. The talks primarily focused on greater market access for both industrial and agricultural products in either country, tariff cuts, and non-tariff barriers, people familiar with the matter said. While the US delegation was led by officials from the Office of the US Trade Representative, the Indian team of negotiators from the trade ministry was led by Rajesh Agrawal. "The negotiations held with the US side were productive and helped in making progress towards crafting a mutually beneficial and balanced agreement including through achievement of early wins," a government source told news agency Reuters. Boosting bilateral digital trade was reportedly another key focus area during the talks. A series of initiatives which will help improve customs and facilitation measures were discussed in detail, the source said, adding that both sides are looking to finalize an initial part of the comprehensive trade pact soon, and discussions will intensify in the days to come. THE NEGOTIATIONS In today's talks, India resisted US demands to open its markets to wheat, dairy, and corn imports, while offering lower tariffs on high-value US products such as almonds, pistachios and walnuts. India also asked the US to revoke its 10 per cent baseline tariff imposed by the Trump administration under a national emergency. But the US side opposed this, noting that even Britain was subject to this under its recent bilateral trade agreement. On steel, India asked for an exemption from Washington's move to impose 50 per cent tariffs. New Delhi also said that it would consider increasing import of American energy, like LNG, crude oil, and coal, while also purchasing defence equipment. AN INTERIM PACT LIKELY THIS MONTH? Both countries are aiming to sign an initial deal within the month of June, perhaps on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada, when Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi will meet - though that less than a week from today. Amid rising criticism over his hasty trade decisions, Donald Trump is reportedly keen on signing a deal with India before the expiry of his 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs, which includes a 26 per cent tariff on India - which would severely impact export of textiles, footwear, rice, and shrimp. However, while negotiators from the trade ministry were busy fine-tuning the trade deal with the US in New Delhi, the Union Minister, Piyush Goyal, was in Switzerland structuring another mega trade pact with the European Union - India's second-largest trading partner. On the India-US trade pact, Mr Goyal said India is prepared to proceed with a deal by first addressing simpler issues. Government officials added that the more complex matters could be negotiated in the next phase of talks, suggesting that India may agree to sign an interim deal. India is looking to sign the next tranche of the bilateral trade pact with United States by September or October, they said.

AT&T suffers massive breach: Hackers steal data of over 86 million customers; what the company said
AT&T has reportedly suffered a massive data breach, with hackers gaining access to the personal data of over 86 million customers. Currently, the telecom provider has nearly 100 million customers in the US, and hackers have reportedly uploaded the personal information of most of them on the dark web. According to a report from Hack Read, the leaked details include full names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email as well as physical addresses of AT&T customers. The report claims that more than 44 million Social Security Numbers were also reportedly part of the data leak. Individually, these data sets pose privacy risks; when combined, they could help in the creation of complete identity profiles for defraud or identity theft, the report adds The stolen data is reportedly fully decrypted. It was initially posted on a Russian cybercrime forum last month, and then re-uploaded to the same forum earlier this month. Hackers reportedly gained access to the data through accounts lacking multi-factor authentication. The report also connected the latest leak to an original hack attributed to the ShinyHunters group in April 2024. What AT&T said about the latest data breach In a statement to Hack Read, an AT&T spokesperson said: 'It is not uncommon for cybercriminals to re-package previously disclosed data for financial gain.
