China says it is working with France on trade differnces, no sign yet of a cognac deal

China and France have agreed to resolve their trade disputes through dialogue, China's foreign ministry said on Friday, though there was no indication that agreement had been reached in talks on lifting Chinese levies on European brandy.
Talks to resolve the cognac dispute accelerated this week with China's commerce minister Wang Wentao meeting his French counterpart in Paris on the sidelines of an OECD conference, and technical talks on the matter taking place in Beijing.
The latest round of negotiations have raised hopes of a settlement, two industry sources with knowledge of the discussions said.
"The two sides have reached consensus on resolving economic and trade issues through dialogue and consultation", the Chinese foreign ministry said after a call between the Chinese and French foreign ministers.
Chinese anti-dumping measures that applied duties of up to 39% on imports of European brandy - with French cognac bearing the brunt - have strained relations between Paris and Beijing.
The brandy duties were enforced days after the European Union took action against Chinese-made electric vehicle imports to shield its local industry, prompting France's President Emmanuel Macron to accuse Beijing of "pure retaliation".
The Chinese duties have dented sales of brands including LVMH 's Hennessy, Pernod Ricard 's Martell and Remy Cointreau.
Beijing was initially meant to make a final decision on the duties by January, but extended the deadline to April and then again to July 5.
China is seeking to strengthen trade ties with the 27-member bloc as relations with the United States have soured in the escalating trade war.
"France will not compromise on ... the protection of its industries, such as cognac," French trade minister Laurent Saint-Martin said after talks with Wang on Wednesday.
Chinese officials, meanwhile, signalled to industry officials during three rounds of technical meetings in Beijing this week they wanted to settle the matter, one of the sources said, but added some sticking points remained.
With annual imports of around $1.7 billion last year, China is the French brandy industry's most important measured by value and the second-largest by volume after the United States.

The French retailer opened its doors for an event to kick off the buzz for this fall's annual Perelman Performing Arts Center, aka PAC NYC's Icon of Culture Gala. Hosted by PAC chair and former Big Apple hizzoner Michael R. Bloomberg; supermodel, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Karlie Kloss; and Printemps Americas CEO, Thierry Prevost, the cocktail announced iconic fashion legend and Légion d'Honneur recipient Diane Von Furstenberg as the 2025 PAC NYC Icon of Culture at the upcoming October black-tie event to benefit the newly opened arts center. The event marks the second Icons of Culture fundraising gala. The kickoff event was held in the new French store—designed by French architect Laura Gonzales that defies the department store moniker— in its famous Red Room shoe salon and adjacent bar, one of five food and beverage locales in the store. While Von Furstenberg was out of town and unable to attend, DVF Studio's CEO, Graziano de Boni, and his wife, Valerie, and VP of philanthropy, Luisella Meloni, showed up in support of the pioneer female fashion designer. Von Furstenberg is being honored not only for her contributions to the city but her 50-year impact on fashion and her role as a mentor and advocate for girls and women around the world. Speaking to a crowd which included Fern Mallis, Derek Blasberg, Drena De Niro, Samantha and Caleigh Perelman, and Born This Way Foundation president and co-founder Cynthia Germanotta, and Lady Gaga's mother. Bloomberg called von Furstenberg "a towering figure in the arts and culture here in New York," adding, "She's one of the most influential names in fashion, an industry at the heart of our city's economy. She's been a tireless advocate for the industry and a generous philanthropist with her leadership on public projects like the High Line and the Statue of Liberty Museum. She's deeply committed to our city, and her support and investment have helped build a bright future here." Following his remarks, a visibly pregnant Karlie Kloss, a longtime collaborator and friend of von Furstenberg, spoke about her relationship with the designer. "I first met Diane when I was 15 years old in New York, and I remember being enamored with her elegance, her confidence, and her style. Diane has been one of my fiercest champions and greatest teachers throughout my career. I've learned so much from her, but especially to be unapologetically myself. She has shown us all what a purposeful life looks like, and I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award," said Kloss. At the time, Bellaiche doubled down on his conviction of the area. "We are convinced that this is a neighborhood of tomorrow. It's up and coming. It's more and more residential. World leaders arrived in the French Riviera on Sunday, June 8, ahead of a high-level summit on ocean conservation, as nations face pressure to adopt tougher stances on overfishing, pollution and marine protection. The United Nations has sounded the alarm over an oceans "emergency" and leaders gathering in Nice will be called upon to commit money and stronger protections for the seas. The UN Ocean Conference, starting Monday, is seeking to turn a corner as nations feud over deep-sea mining, plastic litter and exploitative fishing, against a backdrop of wider geopolitical tensions. "We have a duty to mobilize, because the science is clear and the facts are there," said French President Emmanuel Macron in Monaco on Sunday, where he attended a pre-conference event on ocean finance. Some 60 heads of state and government are expected in Nice, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his Argentine counterpart Javier Milei. "The planet can no longer tolerate broken promises," said Lula on Sunday. "Either we act, or the planet is in danger." 'No excuses' Later Sunday, Macron was to arrive in Nice from Monaco and tour the conference venue, made to look like the cavernous belly of a whale. In the evening, he was to host leaders for a dinner of Mediterranean fish. France has deployed 5,000 police to Nice for the five-day summit where scientists, business leaders and environmental activists were also to attend in big numbers. A strong turnout was expected from Pacific Island nations, whose delegations will urge financial aid to combat rising seas, marine trash and the plunder of fish stocks. The United States under President Donald Trump − whose recent push to fast-track seabed mining in international waters sparked global outrage − was not expected to send a delegation. Conservationists have warned that the summit, which will not produce a legally binding agreement, risks being a talkfest unless leaders come up with concrete proposals to restore marine health. On Saturday, Macron said France would restrict bottom trawling − a destructive fishing method that indiscriminately scrapes the ocean floor − in some of its marine protected areas. Britain also said it would announce plans looking to extend a ban on bottom trawling to more than half of protected English seas. Environmental groups said such steps were good but do not go far enough. Pay up Nations will also face calls to cough up the missing finances to protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030, a target that had been agreed upon by nearly 200 countries in 2022. So far, only around 8% of oceans are designated marine conservation zones and even less are considered truly protected. Greenpeace says at this rate, it could take another 82 years to reach the 30% goal. Another summit priority will be inching towards the numbers required to ratify a global treaty on harmful fishing subsidies, and another on protecting the high seas beyond national control. France is also spearheading a push in Nice to build support for a moratorium on deep-sea mining ahead of a closely-watched meeting of the International Seabed Authority in July.
