Model Chai Wali collared: Cops in soup after assault, two shunted to lines
Simran Gupta, a former model, now running a tea stall and popular over the Internet as 'Model Chai Wali', in Madiaon area, was allegedly assaulted by Lucknow police for keeping her shop open late at night, on Monday. The incident, captured on CCTV, has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage.
The Lucknow Police in its statement said, 'Police reached the spot after receiving information about a complaint of keeping a tea stall open late at night. The entire case is being investigated by ACP, Aliganj. After completing the investigation, departmental action will be taken against the guilty police personnel.'
Late on Tuesday evening, Ram-Ram Bank outpost in-charge Alok Chaudhary, and constable Abhishek Kumar was sent to the police lines (suspended from field duty).
A team of police officers, including a female constable, had arrived at Simran's tea stall, accusing her of operating beyond permissible hours.
Simran alleges that the in-charge of Ram-Ram Bank Police Outpost, Alok Chaudhary, grabbed her by the collar, pushed her, and attempted to force her into a private vehicle. She further claimed that the police tried to extort money from her.
She told HT that she was overseeing construction work at a new shop on Sunday when the police arrived and three male and one female cop allegedly dragged her out of the shop despite it not being open for business.
'When I protested, the police began beating the shop staff,' she said.
She further alleged that the female constable had removed her name badge to avoid identification and slapped her multiple times. The cops also attempted to force her into a private vehicle, but she refused and insisted on walking to the Ram-Ram Bank Police Outpost. Angered by her resistance, the police allegedly hurled abusive language at her.
As a crowd gathered after Simran raised an alarm, the cops fled the scene.
The viral CCTV footage shows a few cops, engaged in an argument, with a female constable seen grabbing Simran's collar and attempting to drag her. While HT could not confirm the identity of those in plain clothes as police personnel, the footage clearly depicts the altercation.
Simran has filed a complaint with the Women's Commission regarding the incident.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (North), Jitendra Kumar Dubey, stated that the matter came to light through social media, and although no formal complaint has been received from Simran, an investigation based on the video evidence is underway, with appropriate action to follow.

Rajasthan influencers hand out beer to commuters, viral video sparks backlash
Seven social media influencers were arrested in Rajasthan's Jaipur after a video of them distributing alcohol on a busy road emerged on the Internet, triggering widespread outrage. The incident took place on Nirjala Ekadashi, a significant religious observance for Hindus. The viral video features influencer Sachin Singh, also known as Lappu Sachin, along with six others, distributing bottles and glasses of beer to commuters on a busy street in Jaipur. At one point in the video, an auto-rickshaw driver is allegedly forced to drink a glass of beer before driving away. The accused arrested were identified as Sachin Singh, Pradeep Kadwasra, Vikas Verma, Abhishek Nirmal, Sunil Kumar, Aditya Mahariya, and Ankit Meghwal, according to a report in NDTV. Espionage case: Hisar court rejects YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's bail plea
A Hisar court on Wednesday denied bail to YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested last month on espionage charges. A day earlier, Jyoti's lawyer Kumar Mukesh had filed the bail application and the matter was placed before judicial magistrate first class Sunil Kumar today, who rejected the bail plea. On June 9, the court extended her judicial custody by two weeks till June 23. On May 26, Jyoti was sent to 14-day judicial custody by the court. Talking to HT over the phone, her lawyer Kumar Mukesh said that he had objected to the sections imposed against Jyoti Malhotra in the first information report (FIR). 'As the investigation is currently underway in the case, the police were against her bail plea. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea. She went to Pakistan High Commission in Delhi in 2023 and at that time, the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was in force but the Hisar police booked her under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, which was Section 124-A (sedition ) under the IPC at that time. This section was kept in abeyance, which is why she can't be prosecuted this,' Kumar added. He said that the FIR was registered on the basis of her questioning on May 15, which is not legally permissible because a person can't become a witness against himself/herself. 'The police could not place any evidence which proves that she was involved in spying. The Hisar superintendent of police (SP) himself said that she had no access to any military or defence related information but she has connections with some Pakistani operatives. If they have not recovered any information from her possession related to sharing sensitive information, then Sections 3 (spying) and 5 (communicating secret information to unauthorised individuals) of the Official Secrets Act, should be dropped from the FIR. The police should provide call details with such operatives. The police will have to prove that any of her Pakistani contacts are intelligence operatives,' he added. Travel blogger Jyoti, 33, a resident of Hisar, was arrested on May 16 for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistani operatives.
