Kylie Kelce explains the ‘kitchen phone' rule her 4 daughters will follow
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there is 'no single perfect age to get a phone,' adding that 'giving your child their first smartphone is a decision that requires some planning and conversation.'
'Smartphones provide access to greater independence and communication with friends, but also to a wide range of apps and websites that aren't intended for children and teens,' the American Academy of Pediatrics notes, leaving parents with a heavy burden on their shoulders.
While one survey recommends children between 12 to 13 years old receive their first phone, in a conversation with Kelly Ripa, Kylie Kelce shared the rule her four daughters will follow as they begin to gain their independence.
During the July 31 episode of her 'Not Gonna Lie' podcast, Kelce explained that her household will have one or two 'kitchen phones.'
'I actually believe that we will be doing what I'm calling the 'kitchen phone,'' Kelce explained to Ripa.
'In other words, there will be one or two extra cell phones, besides mom and dad's cell phones that they can take with them if they have somewhere they're going, where there will not be a parent, or if they will need to get a hold of us, or if they're at something sports related,' Kelce continued.
However, if their kids aren't off on their own, Kelce says the cell phones are then only used on 'the first floor of the house.'
Kelce said her daughters will still be allowed to share phone numbers with their friends and communicate with them via the communal cell phones but they can only use the phones on the first floor of the house and when they are not in use, 'they live in the kitchen.'
'So they're not gonna go upstairs, they're not going to the basement. They're going nowhere but the first floor communal living space,' Kelce shared, as Ripa approved of the approach.
The American Academy of Pediatrics also suggests that 'if you don't think your child is ready for a smartphone, but do want them to be able to communicate with you and their friends, see if your phone carrier has a flip phone model that allows call and texts only.'
And if you do decide to allow your child to have a smartphone that it is important to set rules and expectations regarding the cell phone, while also reminding kids that a smartphone 'does not equal getting social media.'

Travis Kelce Says Dating Taylor Swift Still Feels Normal: ‘We're Just Two People That Are in Love'
Travis Kelce's relationship with Taylor Swift feels more like the 1989 deep cut 'You Are in Love' than the camera-flashing chaos of 'Blank Space.' When asked how they keep their romance alive while navigating being in the public eye, the Kansas City Chiefs player told GQ, 'Whenever I'm with her, it feels like we're just regular people. When there is not a camera on us, we're just two people that are in love.' Kelce and Swift began dating in 2023, when he was fresh off of his team's Super Bowl LVII win and Swift was in the early months of the career-spanning Eras Tour. Some believed they witnessed the couple hard-launch their relationship when Swift attended a Chiefs game after being publicly courted by Kelce, but of course, they had been dating privately for a while before then. 'It can be perceived as something else because of how much it is talked about and how much we are tracked whenever we do go out,' Kelce said. 'It happened very organically, even though from a media standpoint it was being tracked. It still happened very organically.' When I say it was so organic, we fell in love just based off the people we were sitting in a room together with. We are two fun-loving people who have the morals to appreciate everyone for who they are. We share all those values. It kind of just took the fuck off.' Their mutual understanding of how to navigate the media landscape is something Kelce values in their relationship. 'I hadn't experienced somebody in the same shoes as me, having a partner who understands the scrutiny, understands the ups and downs of being in front of millions,' he said. There was also overlap in the physical demands of their respective careers. 'That was very relatable, seeing how exhausted she would get after shows,' Kelce added. 'She may not think of herself as an athlete. She will never tell anyone that she is an athlete. But I've seen what she goes through. I've seen the amount of work that she puts on her body, and it's mind-blowing.' Kelce managed to catch a few shows on the Eras Tour, waiting in the wings as Swift tweaked her lyrics to shout out 'the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me.' He even joined her onstage in London as a dancer during 'I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.' He's witnessed firsthand how grueling those three-hour-long shows could be. 'To go out on a stage, on a computer, essentially, for three hours. The [Eras Tour] floor is literally—I've seen underneath that thing. It is a football-field-sized computer,' Kelce said. 'You take that into Singapore, where it is scorching hot, and all of a sudden you're feeling the fumes from the computer and you're feeling the fumes from the sun and you're doing a show for three hours with a lot of energy, bringing it every single song. That is arguably more exhausting than how much I put in on a Sunday, and she's doing it three, four, five days in a row.' Swift has been to her fair share of Chiefs games, now, too. 'I sort of made her a football fan,' Kelce said. 'She is the most engulfed fan now. She knows what the injury reports look like. She understands what special situations are, third and short—all these things because she just naturally loves to hear about my job.' He enjoys the balance of showing up for each other. 'I get to be the plus one,' he said. 'I get to go and be that fan. Because I am a fan. I'm a fan of music. I'm a fan of art. And it's so cool that I get to experience her being that plus one for me on the football field…. I feel that same enjoyment every time she comes to my shows.' Kelce is also learning the dynamism of performance from Swift. 'Whenever I get in front of a crowd, I feel like I've got to be like, 'Woooo!' Like, excited, bringing the energy. Then I saw that coolness and that calmness and that relatability that she is so good at presenting,' he said. 'I really grabbed that. Like, man, I can use that side of entertainment as well. It's not just always being the guy that brings the energy and creates these exciting moments.' 'People gravitate towards how she performs and how she makes it feel like the entire stadium is in this little room with her,' he continued. 'She is so good at mesmerizing everybody and making everybody feel like it's an intimate situation. I think that alone — there is so much calm and coolness. She's beautiful. She's up there making everyone feel at ease.' Later this week, Swift will appear alongside Kelce as a special guest on New Heights, the podcast he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce. In the teaser for the episode, the singer-songwriter announced her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. Kicking off the rollout together, Kelce is getting another look into how Swift is always 'setting goals for herself and exceeding the expectations and really captivating the world in that regard.' Swift revisits the emotional journey of buying back her master recordings Swift opened up to the Kelce brothers about the emotional process of 'I always refer to it as 'I got my music back this summer,' but I never owned my music at all,' Swift said, noting that she signed her record deal at age 15, and that many artists don't own their masters. Advertisement The singer revealed that she'd been saving up to buy her master recordings since she was a teenager, and that she was devastated when her former label, Big Machine, sold them to music executive Scooter Braun in 2019. At the time, Swift criticized the deal in a 'It really ripped my heart out of my chest, and I told everyone exactly how that felt for me and what I was going through,' Swift told the Kelce brothers. 'I started basically, defiantly, re-recording my music because I wanted to own it, and this was the only way I thought it was ever going to happen.' While she was excited to re-record her albums, Swift admitted to thinking about not owning her music 'every day.' Swift pursued purchasing the master recordings following the conclusion of her 'Eras Tour,' after deciding with her team to approach Shamrock Capital, the private equity firm that bought them from Braun. However, she didn't want to strike a deal to own a percentage of the master recordings, and instead hoped to buy them outright. 'I want to own all of it,' Swift said, noting that it was a 'long shot' that 'they would sell that asset to me.' Swift started to tear up while talking about her family's role in helping her strike the deal, revealing that she sent her mother and brother — rather than lawyers or managers — to speak with the firm. The singer said that her family helped convey how much the music meant to her on a personal level. Advertisement 'I'm in the business of human emotion,' Swift said. 'I would so much rather lead heart-first in something like this.' A few months after the Super Bowl, Swift got a call from her mother while hanging out with Travis in Kansas City. 'She's like, 'You got your music,'' Swift said. 'I just like, very dramatically hit the floor, for real, like honestly just started bawling my eyes out.' The singer then ran to the room where Travis was playing video games and broke the good news to him through tears. 'I started crying too, you know I'm a crier,' Travis said. 'I was just so happy for you.' Swift and Kelce share their love story The couple didn't shy away from talking about their relationship, including how Travis tried to get Swift's attention before they started dating in what she called the 'shooting your shot heard 'round the world.' The Chiefs star famously admitted his interest in her on the podcast in 2023, when he talked about trying (and failing) to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his number on it at one of her concerts. 'This podcast got me a boyfriend, ever since Travis decided to use it as his personal dating app about two years ago,' Swift joked. 'He threw a man-tantrum, it's so funny,' she later added. 'It was such a wild, romantic gesture to just be like, 'I want to date you!'' Swift pointed out how Travis never reached out to her management team, and that she didn't know about the attempt until the 2023 podcast came out. 'I was like, 'Did he ever reach out to be, like, in the tents, or did we know he was in the building?'' Swift said. 'He came with Pat [Mahomes], and he thought that because he knows the elevator lady that he could talk to her about getting down to my dressing room.' Advertisement 'That's how it works in 1973,' she joked. Swift called the public plea a sweet gesture, comparing it to a boombox outside of her window like a 1980s John Hughes movie. 'I was like, 'If this guy isn't crazy, which is a big if, this is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager,'' Swift admitted. Swift opens up about the physical toll of the 'Eras Tour' Swift got real about her historic, globe-spanning 'Eras Tour,' which wrapped in Vancouver last December. The singer admitted that, after traveling for so long across the world, she was glad to not be on the go all the time. 'It feels great Jason, to be honest, I'm not going to lie to you,' Swift said. 'I do miss it, but it was perfect for what it was.' The GRAMMY Award winner also talked about the physical toll of touring and how she was often in a 'state of perpetual physical discomfort,' comparing it to the brothers' experiences during an NFL season. Travis backed her claims, noting the intense recovery station in her hotel room after her three-plus hour shows. 'The similarities were crazy,' Travis said, comparing Swift's physical regimens for concerts to his routines for football. 'I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, she does more than I do.'' Later in the podcast, Travis admitted that she outworks him when they exercise together. 'We've been to the gym numerous times, and she works harder than me every time,' Travis said.
