KwaDukuza municipality pays tribute to slain official Nokulunga Mashabane
Mashabane was employed as manager dealing with intergovernmental relations and protocol in the office of the mayor.
The municipality said she had been found dead in her vehicle on the side of the road between Darnall/Zinkwazi on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Friday.
Mayor Muzi Ngidi expressed shock, saying she had attended a school function with him the day before in ward 27.
'We had a conversation and agreed to meet on Friday in ward 7 at an outreach event as it is Youth Month. On receiving the news I could not go on and decided to cancel my engagements for the day,' said Ngidi.
'Those who worked with her will remember her for her positive attitude and a professional demeanour.'
He cautioned against speculation over her death.
'The circumstances surrounding Nokulunga's death are a cause for concern. Violence against women and children has become such a common occurrence and has been seen as normal in some circles. However, we must allow the law to take its course and let law enforcement agencies bring the perpetrators to book.'
The municipality said Mashabane would be remembered for her kindness, respect humility and tenacity, and that it was saddened 'her gentleness was met with brutality'.

He abused Nokulunga, and our suspicions only deepened when he failed to attend her funeral. We hope the court gives him the harshest sentence possible,' he said. The Mashabane family was visibly emotional throughout the proceedings. Their sorrow was palpable as they watched the two accused men being led into court. Protesters oppose bail for men allegedly linked to murder of KZN municipal worker
Protesters gathered outside the KwaDukuza magistrate's court north of Durban on Friday before the appearance of two men, one of them the husband of slain municipal employee Nokulunga Happiness Mashabane, who was killed in June. Police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said police and private security arrested Mashabane's husband and an alleged accomplice on Wednesday. Mashabane, 31, was found dead in her vehicle along the Zinkwazi link road on June 27. 'She was found with gunshot wounds to the head and was declared deceased on the scene,' said Netshiunda. South African Municipal Workers Union secretary in KwaDukuza, Nkululeko Dladla, said they were opposed to the two suspects getting bail. Their protest coincided with the start of Women's Month. 'We, as men, should be seen to be at the forefront of fighting gender-based violence (GBV). We want to send a message that any form of GBV is unacceptable, whether it is meted out to women or children,' said Dladla. King Shaka Street was cordoned off with a strong police presence as the protesters bearing placards chanted songs denouncing the murder. Two men arrested for KwaDukuza municipal official's murder
KwaDukuza police have arrested two men for the murder of KwaDukuza municipal official Nokulunga Mashabane. The men, aged 32 and 26 respectively, were arrested yesterday (July 30) and will appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court tomorrow (August 1). Mashabane was shot and killed on June 27 and was later discovered in her car on the Zinkwazi Link Road in the early hours of the morning. 'The investigation team from KwaDukuza took over the investigations and worked around the clock, leaving no stone unturned as they searched for clues and leads, which culminated in the arrest of the two suspects,' said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
