UNITED STATES
More than 60 people were killed when an American Airlines (AAL.O), opens new tab regional passenger jet collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on January 29 and crashed into the frigid Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
SOUTH KOREA
Jeju Air international flight 7C2216 crashed at Muan International Airport on Dec. 29, 2024, killing all 175 passengers and four of the six crew in the deadliest air disaster on South Korean soil.
Azerbaijan Airlines international flight J2-8243, an Embraer (EMBR3.SA), opens new tab E190, crashed on December 25 after being diverted from Russia to Kazakhstan, killing 38 people. Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev said in December the plane had been damaged by accidental shooting from the ground in Russia. Moscow has not confirmed this.
A Japan Airlines (JAL) (9201.T), opens new tab plane collided with a smaller Coast Guard aircraft on the runway of Tokyo's Haneda airport on January 2. All 379 people aboard the JAL plane, an Airbus (AIR.PA), opens new tab A350-941 flight, escaped the burning airliner. Five of six crew on the smaller aircraft were killed.
CHINA
A China Eastern Airlines (600115.SS), opens new tab Boeing 737-800 crashed into a mountainous region in the southwestern Guangxi region on March 21, 2022, killing all 132 people on board, in China's deadliest aviation disaster in 28 years.
IRAN
Iran's Revolutionary Guards shot down a Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) Boeing 737-800 on Jan. 8, 2020 shortly after it took off from Tehran Airport, killing all 176 people on board. Iran's civil aviation body blamed a misaligned radar and an error by an air defence operator.
ETHIOPIA
A Boeing 737-MAX 8 Ethiopian Airlines [RIC:RIC:ETHA.UL] jet crashed on March 19, 2019 minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa for Nairobi, killing all 157 people on board.
Soon after, the Boeing 737 MAX global fleet was grounded over safety concerns.
INDONESIA
A Boeing 737 MAX Lion Air plane crashed into the Java Sea soon after taking off from Jakarta on October 29, 2018, killing all 189 people on board.
MALAYSIA
Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 departed from Amsterdam for Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, and was shot down over eastern Ukraine as fighting raged between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces. All 298 passengers on board were killed.
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 went missing on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014. The remains of the Boeing 777 and the 239 people have not been found.

Fire at illegal oil well in Indonesia kills three, hundreds evacuated
JAKARTA, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Firefighters in Indonesia are struggling to contain a three-day-old fire at an illegal oil well that has killed at least three people and injured two others, a disaster relief official said on Tuesday. Some 750 people have been evacuated from the densely populated areas around the site, located in Central Java province's Blora region, Agung Tri, a member of the provincial disaster mitigation agency's rapid response team, told Reuters. The oil well was being operated without a permit by local residents when it caught fire on Sunday. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze, but residents living near the well said they heard an explosion before the fire broke out, Agung said. The relief agency has deployed four excavators in an attempt to use soil to extinguish the fire, he added, but firefighters were still battling massive flames on Tuesday and facing difficulties moving equipment into the hilly terrain surrounding the site. Evacuated residents have, meanwhile, been moved to temporary shelters and local government buildings nearby. Local communities in the mineral-rich Indonesian archipelago have taken over hundreds of oil wells abandoned by companies after they proved to no longer be economically viable. Many are illegally operated with lax safety standards. Indonesian authorities have recently moved to legalise those operations, issuing a regulation in June that allows small companies to partner with residents. The policy is intended to boost the country's oil production while improving safety standards and protecting the welfare of communities.

'Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter,' a royal source told the BBC. It's understood that there have been no eviction notices and that some tenants have moved to similar or better housing within the Great Park. All of the residents remain in Crown Estate properties. One well-connected source said: 'They were told to move out. I guess they were given somewhere else, but they were told they had to move. 'They were not expecting it. Those houses are very close to the lodge, so they're not going to want any Tom, Dick or Harry living in those houses if there are going to be royals there.' Work has already started on minor renovation at the Grade II-listed property, according to reports. Redacted planning applications lodged with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead show permission for minor internal and external alterations was granted earlier this month. They also have homes at Anmer Hall in Norfolk and Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace in London. According to The Sun, Forest Lodge would be worth about £16 million on the open market. The freehold is owned by the King. Plane drops 28,000ft in seconds after mid-air emergency
Terrified passengers texted worried messages to their loved ones as a Virgin Australia flight from Sydney to Brisbane suddenly plunged 28,000ft within seconds. Flight VA993 suddenly lost cabin pressure at high altitude just 40 minutes after taking off at 8.30pm on Thursday. The Boeing 737-800 immediately dropped from its 37,000ft cruising altitude down to under 10,000ft, as pilots sounded an emergency call to air traffic control. One passenger on the flight sent an urgent message to her husband when the plane began to lose altitude. Haley told her husband 'plane's dropping' in a text message, according to Network Ten. 'Emergency landing – love you,' she added. The plane continued safely at the lower altitude - where the plane doesn't need to be pressurised - until it landed in Brisbane. Footage from onboard the aircraft showed oxygen masks hanging from the overhead cabin compartments as flight attendants walked the aisle to calm passengers. An emergency PAN call is a standard call for assistance in an urgent situation. It differs from a Mayday call, which is only issued in a life-threatening situation. Altitude graphs from Flightradar24 showed the plane's steep descent from its peak altitude of 37,000 feet. The Virgin spokesman said no passengers or crew members were injured in the incident. He said the aircraft will be investigated by engineers and the airline will review the situation against their safety standards. The airline's guest relations workers have reached out to affected passengers. When planes experience 'rapid' depressurisation pilots execute a drop down to a breathable altitude as quickly as possible. During the descent G-Forces remain around 1G. As the aircraft maintains a steady speed in the dive, vertical acceleration is mostly stable. In the case of 'rapid' depressurisation, passengers could experience ear pain, or 'popping', temporary loss of hearing and headaches, according to a report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). In a previous depressurisation event, the ATSB said passengers 'also reported high levels of anxiety and feelings of panic, with associated physiological symptoms such as a 'racing heart'. 'Several passengers reported feelings of faintness, light-headedness and or tremors. Depressurisation can occur within seconds and is associated with the sound of a bang and a 'fogging' of the cabin's air. Pilots are trained to deal with such an incident, but depressurisation can still pose a danger if crew members are incapacitated by a lack of oxygen.
