Man sought for Eastern Cape cop's murder killed in shootout with police

News246 hours ago

A man believed to be behind the murder of an Eastern Cape police officer was killed in a shootout at around 22:30 on Saturday.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, it's alleged that the man shot the police officer dead just hours before while the officer was on his way to work in Ngqamakhwe.
He then fled from the scene and embarked on a hijacking spree, stealing five cars in succession, Gantana said.
'The suspect abandoned the last hijacked vehicle upon reaching Ngcobo and continued his escape on foot.'
However, police managed to find him in Ngcobo.
'When confronted by the police, the suspect opened fire on the members. In response to the imminent threat, police returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect,' Gantana said.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate will investigate the circumstances of the man's death, as per standard procedure.
Gantana added that a comprehensive investigation into the murder of the police officer and the series of hijackings was under way by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Unit.

Three of five injured in Passau car ramming released from hospital

Three of the five people injured when a man drove his car into a crowd in the southern German city of Passau have been released from hospital, the police said on Sunday. Among them is the five-year-old daughter of the alleged perpetrator. The man's 40-year-old wife and a 39-year-old woman are still being treated in hospital, but their lives are not in danger, the police said in a statement. The two other people injured in the incident were an 18-year-woman and a 52-year-old woman. Their relationship to the family is not known. According to the investigations so far, the 48-year-old Iraqi man deliberately drove into the group of people on Saturday afternoon. Based on initial findings, the police believe a custody dispute may have been the motive. The man was detained and questioned shortly afterwards. It is not known whether he has made any statement about the incident. He is due to appear before a magistrate on Sunday afternoon, who will decide whether he is to be placed in pre-trial detention.

Woman and Child, 7, Shot and Killed in Apparent Murder-Suicide by Their 'Depressed' Husband and Father: Police

A woman and her 7-year-old son were killed in what police believe was a double murder-suicide by their husband and father in Texas on June 7 Two other people — including a teenager believed to be the couple's daughter — were in the house at the time of the incident A family member told authorities the man "had been depressed lately due to unemployment and other issues"A woman and her 7-year-old son were killed in what police believe was a double murder-suicide by their husband and father. Authorities responded to an apartment complex Katy, Texas, on Saturday, June 7, when they found the woman and the child dead from gunshot wounds, as well as a man injured, the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) said in a news release shared on Facebook. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead on arrival, police said. According to the HSCO, the woman found dead was 43 years old, and her husband was 42 years old. A family member told authorities the man "had been depressed lately due to unemployment and other issues." All three identities of the deceased have yet to be made public. During a press conference, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the young boy was found 'deceased in bed," per Fox 26 Houston. 'Homicide investigators, detectives and CSI units are on scene processing," added Sheriff Gonzalez. 'Lately, the adult male had apparently been without a job and going through some other issues and had possibly sought some treatment recently,' he continued. 'But today, we don't know what transpired that led him to take this type of action.' Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? According to Fox 26 Houston, two other people were in the house at the time of the shooting — a 19-year-old woman, believed to be the deceased couple's daughter, who was in her bedroom at the time, and her boyfriend, who was staying overnight. They were not injured in the shooting, the outlet reported. The investigation currently remains ongoing. The HCSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Sunday, June 8.
