Govt plans to evict 1k families for aerocity project: Saikia
2
Guwahati: Opposition leader and senior Congressman Debabrata Saikia claimed on Tuesday that the state govt plans to seize land from hundreds of indigenous families near Guwahati airport to hand it over to the Adani group for an aerocity project.
The move has sparked unrest in the villages of Garal, Mirzapur, and Azara, as residents received land acquisition notices from the Kamrup (Metro) administration in recent days.
"The Assam govt is planning to evict more than 1000 families and acquire a large amount of land for the proposed Adani group's aerocity at Guwahati airport. The govt intends to acquire the land in the name of Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) to transfer it to the Adani Group for the aerocity," Saikia alleged.
Congress and several other opposition parties earlier opposed the Centre's decision to transfer the management of Guwahati airport to the Adani group. Saikia said previously, in 2021, the state govt evicted 54 families for airport expansion. "Now, they plan to acquire approximately 410 bighas of land in Kamrup Metropolitan district's Ramcharani Mouza, including 70 bighas in Garal village, 257 bighas in Mirzapur village, and 83 bighas in Azara," he said.

While eviction notices have been issued to about 1,116 families living near the airport, Saikia added that some of the families have land deeds for more than a century. "This acquisition of ancestral land demonstrates the govt's ruthlessness. Despite claiming to prioritise Assamese interests, the chief minister's actions reveal a bias towards capitalists. Additionally, local businesses, including homes, flats, and small enterprises, will be negatively impacted," Saikia cautioned.
He rued that the state govt is using the 'outdated' Assam Land (Requisition and Acquisition) Act, 1964, for this acquisition instead of The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (RFCTLARR Act). "RFCTLARR Act, 2013 ensures fair compensation and consent from affected families," he said.
While the affected villagers have formed a committee to protest the move, many local businesses fear significant losses from the aerocity project. "They said guest houses, hotels, and restaurants around the airport in Borjhar, Azara, Mirza, and Dharapur will struggle to compete with Adani's Aerocity, reducing their sales and demand," Saikia said.
He further added, "Environmentally, the aerocity could negatively impact the nearby Ramsar site, Deepor Beel, and surrounding agricultural and grazing lands."

Kerala nuns remain in Chhattisgarh jail after Durg court doesn't hear bail plea
RAIPUR: A court in Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Wednesday disposed of the bail petitions of two Kerala nuns arrested in an alleged conversion and human trafficking case. Kochi: Nuns stage a protest in Kochi demanding the release of two Kerala nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh over allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversion, on July 29 (PTI) Ravi Shankar Singh, secretary of the Durg Advocates Association, said the bail application was filed with the sessions judge on Tuesday. 'Today, the judge was on leave, so the additional district judge heard the bail application. In one line, the judge said that he does not have the authority to hear the bail application because the matter comes under the NIA Act and the NIA court is in Bilaspur.' Singh said when the defence lawyers pointed out that the nuns were in a Durg jail, the judge simply said that he was disposing of the application. 'The court told the police they have 15 days to write to the government to transfer the case to the NIA court,' he added. It is not clear why the judge asked the case to be transferred to a NIA court. Tamaskar Tandon, who appeared for the nuns, said the first information report (FIR) was registered in Durg on mere suspicion that a crime has taken place. 'The GRP (Government Railway Police) has conducted no inquiry, hence the FIR is quashable. Further, the alleged victims are all adults and none of their family members have complained of trafficking or conversion.' He added that although the detailed order is awaited, the judge disposed of the bail petition, saying that the charges are covered under the NIA Act and require the Central government's permission. 'We argued why the nuns should be kept in prison all this while when they are not at fault,' he said. The lawyer also said that they were considering approaching the high court. The two nuns, Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis, were arrested by the GRP at Durg railway station on July 25, along with another person, Sukaman Mandavi, following a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal activist who claimed they were forcibly converting and trafficking three women from tribal-dominated Narayanpur district. On Wednesday, senior CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat met the nuns at Durg Central Jail and alleged that their arrest was 'unconstitutional and illegal,' and part of a targeted attack on Christians. 'This is a targeted attack on Christians in the country. Based on a fabricated case, the two nuns have been arrested. They have been working for years among the poor and were sent to jail as part of a narrow agenda of the BJP and the Chhattisgarh government,' Karat told reporters outside the jail. Karat added that the nuns were unwell and were still made to sleep on the floor. 'They are ailing and suffering from fever and arthritis… Even basic human values are being trampled. This is lawlessness,' she claimed. She further alleged that Bajrang Dal activists assaulted the three alleged victims in front of the police and forced them to change their statements. 'There is no rule of law, instead there is rule of goons,' she said, demanding that the FIR be withdrawn and the nuns released immediately. Karat added that a tribal man, Sukaman Mandavi, was also arrested and assaulted. 'The BJP claims to be the well-wisher of tribals. But that man was also forced to change his statement. This is a matter of shame,' she said. Karat said that all citizens have every right to travel and seek employment anywhere in the country. 'All the allegations are baseless and part of a Hindutva agenda to attack minorities.' A delegation of leaders from the Congress-led UDF alliance in Kerala also visited Durg Central Jail and met the two nuns on Tuesday. The delegation later called on Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who assured them that the matter would be investigated thoroughly. Sai had earlier said it was unfortunate that the issue of women's safety was being politicised. 'Three daughters of Narayanpur were promised nursing training, followed by jobs. A person from Narayanpur handed them over to two nuns at Durg station, who were taking them to Agra. An attempt was being made to convert them,' he had said.

Tamil Nadu Dalit Techie Murder: Case Transferred To Crime Branch Amid Outrage
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu police have transferred the case involving the alleged honour killing of Dalit techie Kavin Selvaganesh to the Crime Branch - CID for a "fair and independent investigation". The move follows massive public outrage over his murder, allegedly by the woman's brother who opposed the inter-caste relationship. The woman's brother and main accused Surjith was arrested and remanded on the same day of the crime Tamil Nadu DGP Shankar Jiwal confirmed that a murder case has been registered and sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been invoked. The police have also invoked the Goondas Act against him. The accused's parents, both serving police sub-inspectors, have also been booked for murder and suspended from service to ensure a free and transparent investigation. "Preliminary investigation reveals the murder was over the relationship between the accused man's sister and the victim," the DGP said in a statement. The murder took place outside a Siddha centre in Tirunelveli where Kavin's grandfather was undergoing treatment and his girlfriend also worked. CCTV footage reportedly shows Surjith taking Kavin away on his motorbike shortly before the attack. The techie was later found brutally murdered. Tensions have flared in the region. Kavin's family has refused to accept his body after post-mortem, demanding the immediate arrest and remand of the cop couple, whom they believe played a role in orchestrating the killing. "Surjith has been booked as A1. Our only demand is his parents ought to be remanded. With that demand, we protested the other day and we've not collected the body. This is a clear case of honour killing. There's provision to remand them based on the FIR," said Selvam, a relative of the victim. Rajya Sabha MP and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan condemned the killing, calling it shocking and urged all political parties to unite in a fight against caste-based violence. "Stringent punishment must be ensured. Casteism must be eradicated through collective political will," he said in a post on X. This murder has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of laws against caste crimes and honour killings in Tamil Nadu, a state often seen as a champion of social justice. Many are also demanding a stringent law for honour killings.

Experts to parliamentary committee: ONOE can lead to 1.5 percentage point rise in GDP
Former finance commission of India chairman N K Singh and another expert on Wednesday made an economic case for simultaneous elections before a parliamentary committee, saying it can lead to a 1.5 percentage point rise in the real GDP growth, higher capital expenditure and more investment activity, sources said. In their joint presentation before the joint parliamentary committee, which is scrutinising the constitutional amendment bill for ' one nation one election ' (ONOE), they quantified the rise in the GDP at Rs 4.5 lakh crore in terms of 2023-24 figures. Explore courses from Top Institutes in Please select course: Select a Course Category However, they added that the fiscal deficit is also expected to rise by 1.3 percentage point due to higher post-election spending. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn The Most Successful Intraday Strategy in Just 2 Hr. thefutureuniversity Learn More Undo Singh, a former MP and revenue secretary, and Prachi Mishra, economics professor, and head and director of Isaac Centre for Public Policy at Ashoka University, studied election cycles in India as it had simultaneous polls till 1967 before the schedules of Lok Sabha and assembly polls were split. The expected rise in the GDP figure, the sources added, is almost half of the total health budget or a third of the education budget. Live Events Studying the economic figures when national and state elections were held together in India, including when over 40 per cent of the assemblies went to polls the same year along with the Lok Sabha, they said the capital-to-current spending ratio is 5.4 percentage points higher than post-simultaneous elections, indicating a shift towards productive and return-generating investments. The investment ratio against the gross fixed capital formation also goes up by 0.5 percentage point, reflecting greater investment activity, especially private and foreign. Frequent elections disrupt economic activity due to uncertainty, adversely impacting manufacturing, construction, tourism and healthcare, with migrant workers frequently returning home and affecting productivity, they said, according to the sources. Noting that migrants comprise nearly one-third of India's population, they said multiple elections impose financial burden on them, weakening their use of their voting rights. School enrolment also goes down by 0.5 percentage point around non-simultaneous elections due to the deployment of teachers on election duty and schools being converted into polling booths, they said. They argued that the diversion of police for frequent electoral duties leads to a growth in crime during non-simultaneous elections due to a longer duration of deployment. Non-simultaneous elections require more imposition of the Model Code of Conduct, restricting government functioning and slowing down development work. India has not had a single year without elections since 1986, placing the country in a perpetual election mode. It leads to a "spillover of populist promises", resulting in a "policy contagion effect", the sources citing the presentation said. Frequent elections fuel unsustainable welfare measures, Singh said, describing it as a "race to the bottom" in fiscal populism.
