Solak at helm will 'benefit' Saints

BBC News19-06-2025
After waiting three and a half years to have a proper sit down with Saints' owner, and now chairman, Dragan Solak, it was a relief and a pleasure to spend time with him.I haven't met many billionaires (!) and so it was great that he was warm, affable and courteous. But he was also sharp and switched on, and there was a calm confidence that I'm guessing comes from being successful.I can't imagine him suffering fools for long. But for the purposes of my interview he was all-in and had things to say.Having taken on a more hands-on role during the disastrous season that's just unfolded for Saints, I can tell he is fully engaged in the club and putting things right.I think Saints fans should be warmed by many things he said, especially ending speculation about his ownership and his belief that the club will get things right.Sport Republic have made a number of mistakes during their first three and a half years in charge but many of those decisions were made while Solak was a "silent" owner. Now he is very much at the helm and I think that can only benefit the club.Click here to listen to the full interview with Southampton owner Dragan Solak.

Why was Eberechi Eze's thumping free-kick disallowed against Chelsea?

Chelsea were handed an early lifeline in their Premier League opener against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge as Eberechi Eze 's thumping free-kick was disallowed following an on-field review. Eze blasted the free-kick through the wall from the edge of the box, beating Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez down to the sheer power of the strike. Sanchez left a gap in the wall to ensure he could see Eze make contact with the ball, but his view was obstructed when Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi pushed Moises Caicedo out of position. Referee Darren England was sent to the pitch-side monitor by the VAR official, and subsequently announced to the Stamford Bridge crowd that Guehi had committed an offence by standing within one metre of the Chelsea wall when the free-kick was taken. Referee England's announced confirmed: 'After review, away number six [Guehi] is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken. Therefore, it's an indirect free kick and a disallowed goal'.

‘Football is dead now' – Fans furious as VAR ‘bails out' Robert Sanchez howler thanks to little-known rule

FANS are in uproar after Eberechi Eze's free-kick against Chelsea was disallowed because of wall encroachment. The England star blasted Crystal Palace in front early on with the ball going through the hands of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. 1 But VAR intervened because Marc Guehi infringed on the Chelsea wall. The referee announced the reason behind the decision, saying: "After review, away number six is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken. "Therefore, it's an indirect free kick and a disallowed goal." Players are prohibited from encroaching on a defensive ball at the moment a free-kick is taken. Law 13 on The FA's website states: "If, when a free kick is taken, an attacking team player is less than 1 m (1 yd) from a 'wall' formed by three or more defending team players, an indirect free kick is awarded." Sanchez's blushes were spared as Eze's rocket bypassed the wall and went straight through his hands.
