UDF's tit-for-tat response to pro-LDF writers in Nilambur
It turned out to be the UDF's tit-for-tat for the clarion call made by a group of writers in support of Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj the other day.
The writers and cultural leaders who rallied for Mr. Shoukath were K.G. Sankara Pillai, Kalpatta Narayanan, J. Devika, B. Rajeevan, U.K. Kumaran, C.V. Balakrishnan, R.P. Azad, Joy Mathew, Sajeevan Anthikkad, Sudha Menon, Joseph C. Mathew, Rosy Thampi, K. Aravindakshan, K. Gopinathan, K. Girish Kumar, Pratapan Thayattu, Babu Kuzhimattam, J.S. Adoor, Pramod Puzhankara, Damodar Prasad, V.S. Anil Kumar, Kusumam Joseph, P.V. Krishnan Nair, M.P. Surendran, C.J. George, Vinod Chandran, K.N. Sunandan, I. Gopinath, Augustine Kuttanellur, Arun Karippalil, V.S. Gireeshan and Janaky Sreedharan.
'If I had my franchise in Nilambur, I would have voted for the Congress led by Rahul Gandhi, who is leading a fighting against fascism at the national level,' said Mr. Kalpatta Narayanan.
He was speaking after taking part in a conclave of learners who benefitted from educational projects like Jyotirgamaya, Sameeksha, Sadgamaya and Oppathinoppam implemented by Mr. Shoukath when he was chairperson of Nilambur municipality.
He said he differed with the other group of writers who called for support to Mr. Swaraj. 'Writers can appear anywhere. He is a free entity. There is no politics in that,' he said.
Mr. Narayanan added that writers should not turn a blind eye on the struggles of ASHAs and the contempt shown by those in power towards them, the land struggle being carried out by the Adivasis in Nilambur.
He said Mr. Shoukath had triggered a revolution of letters in Nilambur when he had headed the Nilambur civic body.
Many participants at the conclave shared their nostalgic memories. They showered Mr. Shoukath with their appreciation and gratitude.
KPCC working president P.C. Vishnunath presided over the function. Former MP Ramya Haridas, Pazhakulam Madhu, and P. Harigovindan spoke.

Satheesan, Vellappally signal truce ahead of Guru's birth anniversary
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan on Friday signalled a truce with Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan ahead of Sree Narayana Guru's birth anniversary celebrations on September 18. Mr. Satheesan said he embraced the SNDP's decision to invite him to participate in the Chathayam Day celebrations by various taluk unions, including the one at the Guru's birthplace in Chempazhanthy. The SNDP Yogam would not have welcomed him without Mr. Natesan's whole-hearted consent, he added. Mr. Nateesan recently challenged Mr. Satheesan to declare that he would go into self-imposed political exile if the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) did not secure an emphatic victory with 100 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections. Mr. Natesan said he would reciprocate by quitting the post of SNDP general secretary if the UDF won. Mr. Satheesan picked up the gauntlet thrown down by Mr. Natesan. Nevertheless, he said he held the SNDP Yogam leader in esteem, given the latter's age and experience at the helm of the powerful Hindu social organisation. Mr. Satheesan requested Mr. Natesan to quit the top post if the UDF won in 2026. Mr. Satheesan said he politically differed with Mr. Natesan on certain aspects. For one, he had opposed the SNDP general secretary's purported criticism of the Indian Union Muslim League and confident Muslim social organisation leaders who he accused of using the political heft of the minority community to wrest educational institutions and other largesse from successive governments at the expense of majority community interests. Mr Satheesan cautioned that such statements would sow divisiveness in society. He said his dispute on some subjects with Mr. Natesan was principled and not personal.

BJP to launch campaign against ‘love jihad' in Kerala
KOCHI: Ignoring the political turmoil over 'vote theft', the reconstituted core committee of the state BJP, which met in Kochi on Thursday, decided to concentrate on preparations for the upcoming local body and assembly elections. The committee also decided to launch a campaign against 'love jihad' and support the family of Sona Eldhose of Kothamangalam, who died by suicide recently following alleged religious conversion attempt, to fight the case legally. Party state vice-president Shone George will lead the campaign. The meeting congratulated the leadership for its effort to ensure the release of the nuns who were arrested in Chhattisgarh. 'The people who ran to Chhattisgarh pretending to help the nuns have not opened their mouths against the Kothamangalam incident where a girl was driven to suicide in the name of love. The LDF and the UDF are alarmed by the increasing influence of the BJP among the Christians and are spreading lies to misguide the community,' said general secretary S Suresh. The core committee also condemned the alleged attempts of the LDF and UDF to tarnish the image of Thrissur MP and Union Minister Suresh Gopi. In addition, the meeting finalised the road map for a 100-day campaign.

Vigilance judge rules Chief Minister has no legal standing to interfere in anti-corruption inquiries
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government appeared to have suffered a legal and political setback after a special court ruled here on Thursday that the Chief Minister has no legal standing to interfere in anti-corruption inquiries. Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge, Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB), Thiruvananthapuram, A Manoj, slammed the VACB's contention that its legally disputed preliminary inquiry report exculpating former Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order, M.R. Ajith Kumar, from charges of illegal amassment of wealth, had the Chief Minister's approval. The judge, somewhat scathingly, ruled that the VACB's testimony had no standing in a court of law and contravened the basic principles of jurisprudence. 'What is the role of the so-called Constitutional dignitaries in the inquiry initiated against the high-ranking police officer? It is a fact that the Vigilance department falls under the control of the Chief Minister of the State; it is solely for governance and nothing more. Whether a person has committed an offence, whether an allegation would disclose the commission of a cognisable offence, is to be decided based on the statutory principles and does not depend on the approval of the political executive. Nobody has the right to interfere in the inquiry, whether at the initial stage or the conclusion,' the judge wrote. Mr. Manoj noted pointedly that the complainant, P. Nagaraj, a lawyer and public interest litigant, had testified in court that persons holding high political office and top bureaucrats had conspired to derail the anti-corruption probe. Notably, Mr. Nagaraj had named Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's political secretary, P. Sasi, as one of the respondents in his petition. The court termed the VACB's 'clean chit' to Mr Ajith Kumar as unacceptable. Mr. Manoj observed that the court did not have the power to order the Director, VACB, to register a case against Mr. Ajith Kumar and other respondents and investigate 'the offence punishable under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (amended in 2018). Nevertheless, the judge wrote that section 223 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, empowered the court to examine the complainant and the respondents under oath to hear their case before 'taking cognisance of the anti-corruption charge'. Mr. Manoj said the court had enough proof on record to conduct such an investigation. Moreover, the judge noted that the State Police Chief's investigation into the imputations against Mr. Ajith Kumar had 'prima facie disclosed that the allegations have a vigilance angle in the form of misappropriation and corruption, attracting the provisions of the anti-corruption law'.
