Yankees Projected to Replace Anthony Volpe With Trade Upgrade After Harsh Reception

The New York Yankees are stumbling into the trade deadline and it could be forcing a significant change of plans.
After a strong start to the season and Most Valuable Player Award caliber first half from slugger Aaron Judge made it seem as if the Yankees would be making several dramatic upgrades at the deadline, a move to the injured list for Judge and a skid in the standings could be altering that outlook.
"Not only are they playing like a sub-.500 team (15-24 since June 13), they sound like a group reduced to looking for scraps," Bob Klapisch wrote for NJ.com. "Yes: praying to sneak in the back door via the wild card and get hot for two weeks in October. It's embarrassing for a team that was seven games up in late May."
If the Yankees are now thinking more about competing next season or even contemplating selling some pieces at the deadline, then their latest additions would mark their biggest for the year.

Ryan McMahon, acquired from the Colorado Rockies, appears to be a long-term solution at third base. And Amed Rosario, acquired from the Washington Nationals, could soon be a new starting shortstop option for the team.
"I'd be worried if I were Anthony Volpe, who went 0-for-3 with two more strikeouts," Klapisch added, reporting on Monday's matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays. "The (Yankee) Stadium crowd has grown tired of Volpe, who heard his loudest boos of the season. ... Just watch: at this rate, Rosario will be playing shortstop at least one or two days a week."
The Yankees have stuck stubbornly with Volpe as the everyday shortstop despite a significant step back last year and a dramatic dip in defense this year. But with Volpe now batting ninth, hearing negative reactions from the home fans and sharing the position with Rosario, he could soon be giving up some starts to the Yankees' newest trade upgrade.

MLB trade deadline: Live updates, news, transactions, rumors as Eugenio Suárez avoids serious injury, Seranthony Domínguez swaps jerseys mid-series to join Blue Jays

The 2025 MLB trade deadline is just around the corner, and teams are already making moves. The Arizona Diamondbacks unofficially kicked things off last week by trading first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, and several other teams got in the mix over the weekend. The Yankees made two acquisitions in Ryan McMahon and Ahmed Rosario, and the Mets traded for Gregory Soto. The action should continue in the coming days, as MLB's contenders scramble to add talent ahead of the season's stretch run. On Monday, Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, considered a likely trade target, was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through Aug. 31 in connection with a sports-gambling investigation. Meanwhile, Diamondbacks All-Star 3B Eugenio Suárez, who many considered atop the MLB trade market, was hit in the hand by a fastball Monday evening. X-rays came back negative. On Tuesday, the action was headlined by a swap between the Orioles and Blue Jays, as Baltimore sent reliever Seranthony Domínguez to Toronto in exchange for RHP prospect Juaron Watts-Brown. Interestingly, the two teams were mid-series (and scheduled for a double-header), so following the trade, Domínguez had a short walk to his new team's clubhouse ... and a short turnaround time before stepping in to pitch in the second game of the day. Domínguez pitched the bottom of the seventh inning for the Blue Jays, notching two strikeouts. There aren't many superstars expected to be on the move ahead of this deadline, but every contender has a hole to fill. No team is running away from the field in the standings, which means some teams likely need to do something to stand out. The deadline is 6 p.m. ET Thursday. After that, the only ways teams can add to their rosters are by calling up minor leaguers or signing free agents, and any player who isn't in an organization by the end of August is ineligible for the postseason. Yankees-Nationals 6-Player Trade Idea Ships MacKenzie Gore to New York

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As the trade deadline approaches, Major League Baseball fans are on pins and needles waiting to see in there's an unexpected blockbuster. We saw it earlier this season when Rafael Devers was shipped from the Boston Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants. The big one can happen at any moment, and Thursday at 6 p.m. ET is the last call for all 30 teams. The New York Yankees might be a candidate to make the biggest splash, because they clearly need a shakeup. After shoring up their infield with the acquisitions of Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario, their attention should be shifting to the pitching front. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 25: MacKenzie Gore #1 of the Washington Nationals delivers a pitch against the Minnesota Twins during the first inning at Target Field on July 25, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 25: MacKenzie Gore #1 of the Washington Nationals delivers a pitch against the Minnesota Twins during the first inning at Target Field on July 25, 2025 in Minneapolis, Shanthi Sepe-Chepuru believes the Yankees could make a godfather offer for Washington Nationals All-Star starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore, who would be under team control for two-and-a-half years. On Wednesday, Sepe-Chepuru proposed a mock trade that would swap Gore and Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan for pitching prospects Carlos Lagrange and Cam Schlittler, catching prospect Rafael Flores, and outfield prospect Everson Pereira. "The Yankees and Nationals have already dealt with each other this month, so we know the line is open. Breakout star Gore (3.52 ERA, 11.0 K/9) is 26 years old, entering his first year of arbitration, and profiles a lot like current Yankee Carlos Rodón and perpetual trade target Dylan Cease," wrote Sepe-Chepuru. "This return, in theory, would let the Yankees keep the prospects they're unwilling to part with (No. 1 George Lombard Jr. and No. 4 Spencer Jones) while giving the Nationals talent they can use in a future Wild Card bid; Schlittler (who debuted on July 9) and Lagrange are hard-throwing righties with the potential to stick in the rotation, although Lagrange's arsenal could work just as well in the 9th." To be frank, there's little reason for the Nationals to consider dealing Gore. He's entering his prime, and he's already been part of a long rebuild that should in theory be coming to fruition next season. But the Yankees shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. If the Nationals give them an opportunity to pay this admittedly high price, they should take it and run. More MLB: Yankees Rumors: Pirates Emerging As Likely Pitching Trade Partner?
