In Noida, family held ‘hostage' in cab as driver tries to escape cops
Noida: A couple and their minor daughter found themselves held captive in a cab as their driver chose to evade a police check during a ride from Noida to Delhi's Connaught Place on Thursday. The terrified family, whose repeated pleas to the driver to slow down were ignored as police chased the cab, recorded the incident on their mobile phone till they were let go on the Sector 66 road in Noida. Police said on Friday the driver, Nasim (24), fled afterwards but he was caught from Greater Noida later in the day. The couple and their 4-year-old daughter sat in a Haryana-registered WagonR and the ride was uneventful till they reached Parthala bridge. There, a police interceptor vehicle signalled to the cab driver to stop, but he accelerated and took a U-turn, colliding with another car in the getaway attempt. Nasim allegedly sped away once again and kept driving in the opposite direction of Delhi, within Noida. Videos shared by Mohan on his X account show Nasim swerving and dodging traffic for several kilometres while being chased by a police vehicle. The couple can be heard telling him to stop the cab, but he refuses, saying his documents are incomplete and cops will seize his car. At one point, Mohan tells Nasim he will talk to cops and pay a fine on the cab driver's behalf, but Nasim refuses, insisting that his car will get impounded. In another clip, Mohan and his wife again ask Nasim to stop as the couple's daughter is heard wailing. Nasim, having thrown cops off his trail, relents and stops the cab for a few seconds on the Sector 66 road, allowing Mohan and his family to get off. Mohan told police his wife sustained minor injuries to her hand from the collision. DCP (central Noida) Shakti Mohan Avasthy said police registered a case at the Phase 3 station and traced Nasim to Sahara Cut, where he was arrested. The WagonR was seized and a challan amounting to Rs 29,250 was issued. "The accused let the family go, perhaps because they were making videos and screaming for help. During interrogation, he admitted to driving the cab and using another name – Sonu – to cheat. We found Aadhaar cards in both the names," the DCP said. Police sources told TOI that the cab was asked to stop as a routine check. "We later found out that challans of over Rs 1 lakh were issued against the car. When police party tried to stop the driver, he feared getting caught, so he sped away," a police officer said. Uber India acknowledged Mohan's posts on X, and sought details of cab to "follow up" on the incident. A spokesperson for the cab aggregator said, "Such behaviour has no place on our platform and violates our community guidelines. We have removed the driver's access to the platform. We connected with the said family and stand ready to assist law enforcement authorities with any information that they may require." Investigators said Nasim was charged under sections 281 (Rash driving), 137(2) (kidnapping), 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 319 (cheating by personation), 318(4) (cheating), 336(2) (forgery without specific intent to cheat or harm reputation), 339 (forged document) and 338 (forgery of valuable security) of BNS.
