How a bat sealed the legacy of metal's Prince of Darkness
Ozzy Osbourne died at the age of 76 this week, just weeks after his farewell show. Though he will, of course, be remembered for his Hall of Fame-worthy heavy metal talent, the former Black Sabbath frontman will also go down in history for a particular moment he shared with a dead bat in Iowa.
During Osbourne's Diary of a Madman tour in January 1982, the demon-invoking musician bit the head of what he thought was a fake, rubber bat that had been thrown on stage at Des Moines' Veterans Memorial Auditorium (now the Iowa Events Centre). However, as soon as he noticed the blood seeping out of the fanged mammal, he realised it was a dead, but very real, bat.
Speaking in the 2020 documentary The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne, he recalled thinking it was fake when it was thrown towards him.

'I picked it up, put it in my mouth, crunched down, bit into it, being the clown that I am,' he said. 'I had to go to the hospital afterward and get rabies shots, one in each rear.'
It was later revealed that Mark Neal, an Osbourne fan who had been at the Des Moines concert that night, had allegedly thrown the animal on stage. According to an Iowa-based report, Neal said the bat was already dead before the show. However, Osbourne later said he felt the bat's head 'twitch' in his mouth.
Osbourne had already earned the 'Prince of Darkness' moniker during his time as the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath, but the bat incident certainly cemented his anarchic, unpredictable brand, and launched him into mainstream fame.
He went on to appear on popular talk shows such as The David Letterman Show to explain why he bit the animal, and even sold plush toy bats with detachable heads as merchandise. From there, Osbourne continued to leverage his more mainstream stardom, but it arguably reached a peak in 2002 when he and his family launched The Osbournes, one of MTV's first reality television shows. Its first season was cited as the most-viewed series ever on MTV, attracting as many as 8 million viewers in one airing.

Geezer Butler "wasn't prepared" for how "frail" Ozzy Osbourne was during rehearsals for the Black Sabbath reunion gig. The band got back together for one huge final show - the Back To The Beginning concert - at Villa Park in their hometown of Birmingham, England on July 5 and bassist Geezer has admitted he was shocked to see singer Ozzy in such poor health. In an essay written for The Sunday Times newspaper, Geezer explained: "The rehearsals for that final show started a month before at a studio in the Oxfordshire countryside. Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and I ran through seven songs together. Of course, not having played together for 20 years, it took a couple of days to get rid of the rust. "Then it was time for Ozzy to join us. I knew he wasn't in good health, but I wasn't prepared to see how frail he was. "He was helped into the rehearsal room by two helpers and a nurse and was using a cane - being Ozzy, the cane was black and studded with gold and precious stones." Geezer went on to reveal his friend - who passed away on July 22 just two weeks after the concert - was unusually quiet during rehearsals because he found the work so exhausting. He added: "[Ozzy] didn't really say much beyond the usual greetings and when he sang, he sat in a chair. We ran through the songs but we could see it was exhausting him after six or seven songs. "We had a bit of a chat, but he was really quiet compared with the Ozzy of old." Geezer added that he wishes he'd been able to spend more time with Ozzy because he had no idea the appearance at the gig would be the last time they would ever see each other. He added: "I wish I'd had more time backstage with Ozzy, but wishes are redundant now. As Ozzy used to say: 'Wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which comes first. "Nobody knew he'd be gone from us little more than two weeks after the final show. But I am so grateful we got to play one last time together in front of his beloved fans." Geezer concluded the piece by writing: "God bless, Oz, it has been one hell of a ride! Love you!"

But pre-production is underway for the five special episodes, which will see Home and Away visit this side of the country for the first time in its 37-year history. Filming is set to take place 'at several locations' across the State, with producers promising Western Australia will be showcased in all its stunning glory, 'from cosmopolitan Perth to its rugged coastline and expansive red outback.' The WA Government claims the episodes will showcase the State to audiences beyond Australis and New Zealand to almost 50 other international markets. The UK has a strong Home and Away fan base, with 250,000 UK-based viewers per episode, presenting a huge opportunity to promote WA as a tourism destination. Home and Away series producer, Lucy Addario, said the cast and crew were 'beyond excited' to be packing their bags and heading to Perth to begin shooting in two months' time. '(Western Australia's) awe-inspiring beauty, diverse landscapes and sheer scale make it the perfect backdrop for this huge storyline,' she said. 'Working with the Tourism Western Australia team has been an absolute joy and we can't wait for audiences to fall in love with WA like we have.'
