Patience pays off for Mansell with breakthrough Singapore win
SINGAPORE: Richard Mansell sank a crucial birdie putt at the final hole to win a first DP World Tour title at the weather-hit Porsche Singapore Classic by a single shot on Sunday.
Needing to avoid a playoff with Japan's Keita Nakajima at Laguna National Golf Resort Club, the Englishman reached the green in two at the par-five 18th.
He then rolled his eagle attempt to within six feet of the pin before holding his nerve to drain his winning putt to clinch his maiden DP World Tour title with a final-round six-under-par 66.
'I wish this win had come earlier. I played so well today to get into that position and I've been waiting for this moment for a long time,' said the 29-year-old.
'So many people have supported and believed in me when I stopped doing it myself.'
Victory was particularly special as Mansell had come close to winning on multiple occasions on the tour, only to fall short and struggle with self-belief.
'I had quite a few close calls and didn't get it done. Looking back, I probably should have kept doing what I was doing and it (a win) probably would have happened a lot sooner,' he said.
'I tried to change and became quite good at pointing the finger at other people. I was just not enjoying this much and I got a little lost.
'It took a lot of work this past six months.'
Nakajima carded seven birdies for a bogey-free 65 to finish alone in second place.
Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin and France's Adrien Saddier ended the week tied for third.
A three-day monsoon surge in Singapore forced the cancelation of the first round on Thursday, leading the tournament to be decided over 54 holes.

Manassero, Fox share PGA Canadian Open lead with plenty in pursuit
MONTREAL: Italian veteran Matteo Manassero was poised to challenge for his first US PGA Tour title after conjuring seven birdies in a six-under par 64 to share the 54-hole lead at the Canadian Open with New Zealand's Ryan Fox. Fox also fired seven birdies and a bogey at TPC Toronto Osprey Valley, their 14-under par total of 196 putting the leaders one stroke clear atop a congested leaderboard, with 22 more players within four strokes of the lead. On a day when as many as 11 players shared the lead at one point, Manassero was the first to reach 14-under with his sixth birdie of the day at the 15th. He bogeyed 17, where he was in the left rough off the tee and missed a four-footer to save par, but he birdied the par-five 18th. 'It was a really good round,' Manassero said. 'I missed the short one on 17, and I did miss a couple more short ones today. I try to think of them just like a shot really, like a driver, like a six-iron, whatever. It's just a shot. 'It wasn't that hard for me to stay focused into what I was doing and not ruining (it) at the end.' Manassero, a five-time winner on the DP World Tour, is seeking his first US tour title. The 32-year-old Italian has revived his career after briefly walking away from the game in the midst of a prolonged slump. He claimed his first DP World Tour victory in more than a decade in March of 2024. 'It's definitely made me more mature and much better perspective toward golf, which at one point was everything,' he said of the ups and downs of his career. 'I have a better perspective toward, for example, a day like tomorrow.' Fox, 38, is aiming to build off his first US PGA Tour title, captured in a playoff at the Myrtle Beach Classic last month. He launched his round with three straight birdies and had five on the front nine, bouncing back from a bogey at 11 — where he was in the water — with birdies at 12 and 18. 'To be honest, everything went pretty right,' Fox said. 'I drove it great. I think, if you do that round here, you give yourself lots of chances. 'Had a lot of good wedge shots, holed a few putts early. Just played really solid kind of stress-free golf for the most part.' Americans Lee Hodges and Mat McCarty and Taiwan's Kevin Yu were tied for third on 13-under 197. Hodges bookended his seven-under 63 with eagles at the first and 18th, with three birdies in between. Yu had eight birdies and a bogey in his 63 while McCarty had seven birdies in his 64. Canadian Mackenzie Hughes and Americans Jake Knapp and Andrew Putnam were tied on 12-under, one stroke clear of a group of seven players on 11-under 199. Ireland's Shane Lowry headlined a group of nine players on 200. Fox said his victory last month had him feeling 'more comfortable in my own shoes,' but he with so many within striking distance he said that Sunday promised to be a shoot-out. 'Obviously there's a lot of good players behind me,' he said. 'I feel like it's going to take a pretty low (score) to get the job done.'

Patrick Reed leads by two, DeChambeau's Crushers GC show way in team race at LIV Golf Miami
MIAMI: Despite a double bogey on his closing hole, Patrick Reed shot a 5-under par 67 and grabbed the first-round lead at LIV Golf Miami on Friday at Trump National Doral. Reed began his round on the 10th hole and put seven birdies on his card, reaching 7 under with a tap-in at the par-5 eighth. But at the par-3 ninth, he missed the green wide left and compounded the mistake by putting his second shot into a bunker. Reed came back to the pack a bit, but he still held a two-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson (3-under 69). 'I mean, the first 17 were great,' Reed said. 'No, as a whole I played solid. I hit the ball pretty well off the tee, hit some quality iron shots and made some putts, and I think that's what you have to do around this place. .'.. Yeah, for the back tee with this kind of wind direction here on 9, I don't know what to do. I don't have a club for it that I feel like I can hit a straight shot, and it's hard to start it over the water and get it turning back. It was just an unfortunate finish, but at the end of the day, it's still a solid round of golf.' In LIV Golf's first US event of 2025, it was fitting that the top four players are all past major champions, three of them with at least one green jacket to their name with the Masters a week away. Reed won the Masters in 2018, Mickelson has captured three green jackets and Dustin Johnson won the 2020 edition that was delayed to November. 'Obviously I was playing really good at the end of 2020,' Johnson said Friday. 'But the game I feel like it's getting pretty close to that. Obviously it's a really fine line to being that good or just a little bit off, but yeah, I've got a lot of confidence in my game right now.' Johnson had a three-birdie run at Nos. 14-16 late in his round to get to 3 under, while DeChambeau was steady with four birdies and just one bogey. DeChambeau's team, Crushers GC, also holds a narrow two-shot lead in the team competition through one round. The four-man team of DeChambeau, Charles Howell III, Englishman Paul Casey and India's Anirban Lahiri combined to go 2 under par, with Johnson's 4Aces GC sitting second at even par. 'There's a reason we won here (at the LIV Team Championship) in 2023,' DeChambeau said. 'They like this golf course. They like a tough, challenging golf course where you can strategically play and let everybody kind of mess up on their own, and we just plot along and make a couple birdies where we can and move along when it's a really brutal hole.'
