SRN Hospital in Prayagraj to transform trauma centre into level-1 facility

Hindustan Times18-05-2025

With an aim to strengthen emergency medical services in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital (SRNH) in Prayagraj is set to upgrade its existing level-2 trauma centre to a full-fledged level-1 facility.
Aligning with the Apex Trauma Centre Guidelines by the union ministry of health and family welfare, the proposed expansion will transform the trauma centre into a state-of-the-art 100-bed level-1 facility at a cost of over ₹38.84 crore, said officials at SRNH, an associated hospital of Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, Prayagraj.
According to officials, the construction of the new trauma block will begin in June 2025. The facility to developed with the state government's support will likely be functional within 18-24 months.
Dr RK Chaudhry, co-nodal officer of the trauma centre at SRN Hospital, said, 'With the transition to level-1 trauma care, we aim to save more lives by ensuring timely, integrated, and multidisciplinary treatment for every serious case arriving here. The upgraded centre will be a lifeline for trauma victims in eastern U.P. and a model of modern emergency care in the state.'
Planned expansion
As per the already-floated tender and planning documents, the new trauma block will include a state-of-the-art integrated emergency room with triage, resuscitation, and fast-track bays along with dedicated ICU and HDU zones with increased bed strength.
There will also be a high dependency unit (HDU), also known as an intermediate care unit (ICU) or step-down unit -- a specialised area within a hospital that provides a higher level of care than a general ward but is not an intensive care unit.
The facility will also have at least four modular operation theatres, on-site CT, MRI, digital X-ray, and ultrasonography units as well as 24x7 in-house laboratory and blood bank support along with dedicated spaces for neurosurgery, orthopaedic trauma, plastic and general surgery teams.
Current scenario and limitations
At present, SRN Hospital's trauma centre, functioning since 2012, operates with 53 beds, including 10 intensive care unit beds, two operation theatres besides diagnostic and critical testing facilities. The current layout affects patient mobility and slows down multidisciplinary interventions during emergencies, officials said.
Wide catchment and patient load
Currently, the SRNH trauma centre serves hundreds of trauma patients every week, not only from Prayagraj but also from adjoining districts, including Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, officials said.
Most cases involve road traffic accidents, head injuries, polytrauma, burns, and orthopaedic emergencies. Hospital officials claim to have noted a spike in trauma referrals during Magh Mela, Kumbh Mela and festive seasons, when mass gatherings lead to a higher incidence of accidents and critical injuries.
Apex Trauma Centre Guidelines
As per national norms and the Trauma Care Facility Guidelines by the Directorate General of Health Services, a level-1 trauma centre must be affiliated with a teaching hospital, have multidisciplinary specialist teams available 24x7, possess full diagnostic and operative capabilities on-site, have designated space for rehabilitation and psychological care, and serve as a referral hub for lower-tier trauma centres
SRNH meets a major part of the eligibility already and is being structurally equipped now to meet remaining requirements, hospital officials said.

Karnataka CM Responds To Fatal Bengaluru Stadium Incident, Cites Historical Precedents

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference Thursday following the devastating stampede at a Bengaluru stadium that resulted in 11 fatalities and approximately 50 injuries. During his address to the media, the Chief Minister acknowledged the occurrence of similar incidents in the past while clarifying his position on the tragedy. "Multiple stampede incidents have taken place previously," Siddaramaiah stated, while emphasizing that his comments should not be interpreted as justification for the current incident. He specifically mentioned the Kumbh Mela stampede from earlier this year as an example, but stressed his intent was not to defend the Bengaluru tragedy. The Chief Minister explained the circumstances that led to the disaster, highlighting the massive disparity between expected and actual attendance. While the stadium's official capacity stands at 35,000 people, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 individuals gathered at the venue, creating an unprecedented situation that overwhelmed the facility's safety measures. Siddaramaiah also drew attention to a contrasting scenario that occurred at Vidhan Soudha, where more than 100,000 people assembled without any adverse incidents. This comparison underscored the unpredictable nature of crowd management and the specific challenges faced at the stadium location. The Chief Minister's remarks came as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede and work to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident has raised serious questions about crowd control measures and safety protocols at large public gatherings in the state.

Congress Criticised, I Didnt: On Bengaluru Stampede Deaths, Siddaramaiahs Kumbh Parallel

Bengaluru Stampede: A tragic incident unfolded in Bengaluru on Wednesday when a stampede occurred near the Chinnaswamy Stadium as fans had gathered to cheer for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for winning their first IPL trophy in 18 years. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that such incidents happen in many places and drew a parallel to the Kumbh Mela that was held earlier this year. In the stampede, 11 people lost their lives and 47 were injured. Speaking to the media about the incident, the CM added that the Congress party had criticised the incident that happened during Kumbh Mela 2025, however, the Karnataka government did not. "Such incidents happened in many places; I am not going to defend it by comparing them and saying that it happened here and there... 50-60 people died in Kumbh Mela. I did not criticise. If Congress criticises, then that is a different matter. Did I or the Karnataka government criticise?" said Karnataka CM. #WATCH | Bengaluru stampede | "Such incidents happened in many places; I am not going to defend it by comparing them and saying that it happened here and there... 50-60 people died in Kumbh Mela. "Deeply shocked by the tragic loss of lives in the stampede during the RCB victory celebrations near Chinnaswamy Stadium. A moment of joy has been eclipsed by sorrow," he posted. "I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," Karnataka CM added. He also added that a victory parade for the RCB was not allowed as a precautionary measure; however, a crowd surge near the stadium where the felicitation ceremony was taking place for the team led to the stampede. "Precautionary measures were taken by not allowing a victory parade, but the crowd surge near the stadium led to this tragedy. I urge everyone to always prioritise safety — above excitement, celebration, or crowd fervour," Siddaramaiah wrote. The Prime Minister's Office also posted on X and quoted PM Narendra Modi as saying, "The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery." The Deputy CM of Karnataka, speaking to the media, complimented the police and said, " Again I'm telling on record. I should compliment my Police officers... morning also, they wanted to have a procession, they wanted to bring a vehicle from the airport itself... Police guided us not to... that's why I rushed to the airport and ensured nothing went wrong... in Vidhana Soudha, also we were very cautious..." Shivakumar also informed that, for Thursday, except for the cabinet meeting, all programmes have been postponed.

SRN hosp to install advance machine for cancer treatment

Prayagraj: Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, under the Prime Minister's Health Protection Scheme (PMSSY), is set to install an HDR Brachytherapy machine for cancer treatment in the coming months. The project, initially proposed in 2016 as part of a Super Speciality Block, was temporarily shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which redirected all available resources and infrastructure. According to the media in charge of SRN, Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, the medical college will soon procure the machine because the most crucial component—an underground shielded bunker required for its installation—has not been constructed. The layout is now ready, and work on the radiation-safe bunker has been initiated following communication with the state govt. Detailing what Brachytherapy is, Dr Singh said, "Brachytherapy is a highly focused type of internal radiation therapy used for cancers like cervical, prostate, breast and skin cancers. It involves placing a radioactive source directly inside or next to the tumour, thereby delivering a high dose of radiation to the cancer with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissues." Unlike external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), brachytherapy ensures that the rest of the body is exposed to very little radiation, making it an effective and safe treatment modality. According to experts, "This form of radiation therapy is extremely useful for localised tumours, and once the machine is installed, it will benefit cancer patients across the region." Initially, in 2016, plans were approved to install this machine under PMSSY. By 2019, the Super Speciality Block was completed, but in 2020, during the peak of COVID-19, the building was repurposed into a dedicated COVID ward, postponing all other medical projects. "As of 2025, groundwork for bunker construction has restarted, and layout approvals are in place. Soon we will procure the machine, and the patients here at SRN will be able to get the state-of-the-art facility," said Dr Santosh, who is also the Associate Professor at MLN Medical College.
