IT'S a new era at Rangers - and it will all begin for Russell Martin with the white knuckle ride which is the Champions League qualifiers.
And for the former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton boss, who was appointed earlier this month, that means a tough opener against Panathinaikos.

The first leg will be at Ibrox with Gers facing a trip to Greece for the second leg.
Greek giants Panathinaikos were perhaps the toughest of the three sides Rangers could have faced.
They haven't met since Walter Smith's side squeezed past the Greeks at the last 16 phase as they went on to book their spot in the Uefa Cup final in Manchester.
And a tough visit to Athens so early in Martin's tenure will be a major challenge right off the bat.
Rangers' sizeable Uefa five-year coefficient gives them seeding at both this stage and the third round if they can make it that far - although they WON'T be protected at the playoff round.
Scotland's dropping co-efficient means BOTH halves of the Old Firm have to pre-qualify to make it into the reshaped Champions League this season.
Celtic enter at the play-off round stage in the 'Champions path' - as they look to improve on their agonising knockout round playoff defeat to Bayern Munich.
Even if they don't make it all the way to the Champions League, victory in their opening tie will be crucial for Rangers.
As it stands they have NO guarantee of group stage football in Europe this season.

Defender Malick Thiaw closing in on Newcastle switch

AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw was on Tyneside on Monday to undergo a medical as he closed in on a move to Newcastle. The 24-year-old Germany international flew in on Sunday after the two clubs agreed a fee understood to amount to an initial 35million Euros, around £30.3m. Thiaw has made 85 appearances for the Serie A club, which he joined from Schalke in August 2022, one of them in a 0-0 Champions League draw with the Magpies at the San Siro in September 2023. Should the deal go through, Thiaw will be head coach Eddie Howe's third senior recruit of a difficult summer following the £55million capture of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and a loan move for Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Thiaw's arrival would strengthen a central defensive pool which currently includes Sven Botman, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles. It would also provide a measure of respite for Howe, who is having to contend with the ongoing search for new recruits while dealing with the situation surrounding want-away striker Alexander Isak. Newcastle open their Premier League campaign at Aston Villa on Saturday having won none of their pre-season fixtures and with their transfer mission far from complete.

Russell Martin is no Rangers upgrade on Warburton or Beale as Hotline hands him a 10 in a Row ultimatum

It's another explosive edition of the Hotline as Ryan McDonald mans the buzzing phone lines The more things change, the more they stay the same. ‌ A new manager, new players and even new owners have checked into Ibrox. But Rangers fans are witnessing the same story unfold as Celtic charge ahead early on in the title race. ‌ Two games in and four points behind their old pals across the city. It's not the start Russell Martin would've envisioned, and already, fans are calling for his head. ‌ Peter Cooperwhite said: "Well, here we go again, deja vu. We haven't progressed under Russell Martin and to be honest, beat an average Panathinaikos. "We beat Plzen in the first leg but that glossed over something. Back to normality - can't follow up at home with a league win. "I think he's out of his depth big time. Players can't grasp his style of play, nor can the fans. He's not an upgrade to Warburton or Beale. ‌ "Barry had dross to pick from and got a good bit out of them. I would like to know how Martin put himself to the board for them to pick him." Nine signings have arrived in Govan over the summer but Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, emailed: "Rangers have had serious trouble with the left back position for a few years now. "The fact that Martin has come in and tried and failed playing a player out of position there, you would think that the position would be a serious priority, yet still no action regarding a new left back. ‌ "It doesn't look like Martin has any clue about management. I like to give people time, but on this occasion, time is seriously running out. "At least one much better left back and a run of at least ten Premiership wins in a row might just save Martin from the early sack he's lining himself up for with the dross that's on show now. "One of Rangers' best players, Niko Raskin, has a price tag that is devaluing because of Martin's stubborn style of boring play, which the fans are hating." ‌ Ian Renton said: "Keith Jackson hit the nail on the head when he said Rangers' style of play is 'executed at a pedestrian, plodding pace'. "It took them till about the 90th minute before they thought, maybe we should raise the tempo of our game. ‌ "I can imagine, if it continues like this, there will be a lot of fans who will decide it is not worthwhile wasting a Saturday afternoon, when they could be doing something more exciting." Martin isn't the only one feeling the heat from the stands. Gordon Hendry, Ochiltree, said: "As a Rangers fan, I had to smile at Martin's comments that he couldn't understand the fans jeering Dowell's introduction. "Perhaps it's because he hasn't seen the number of dire performances we've had to watch from Dowell in the past. ‌ "Also, it looks as if young Aarons can't quite take the pressure in playing for Rangers and sadly, despite his height, Djiga leaves the ball winning in the air to Souttar. As for Rothwell, he has shown little creativity going forward. "On a more positive note Antman, Gassama and young Cameron look decent additions to the squad. "Let's hope for Martin's sake and with some further additions before the window closes, we can improve against the sit-in teams as the league season progresses." ‌ One Rangers fan might be wiping the egg off his face after some red-hot takes on the Hotline. And Joe Hailey, Baillieston, bit back: "So Mr Alan Flett thinks his club will soon be back in their 'rightful place'. "I think they are already there, so congratulations on the achievement. It's come sooner than even he anticipated." ‌ Arrin Geddes, Irvine, also had a nibble: "I'm guessing Alan Flett's fanciful idea of the Rangers' rightful position is above Celtic. "I'm wondering how exactly this conclusion has been arrived at. Behind Celtic in everything you can think of except more wins in UEFA's 2nd-tier competition, because they're in it more." But the man himself remains defiant: "I would bet money that both Panathinaikos and Plzen would beat Celtic over two legs. ‌ "Their deluded fans love to remind us about their UCL wins vs the likes of Barcelona, Man Utd and Milan, but they were just one-off games in the group stages. "Celtic didn't knock any of these teams out of the competition. In the grand scheme of things, they were just nights to tell the grandchildren about. "Any half-decent side can beat a big team, in a one-off game, with a noisy home crowd behind them." ‌ Across the city, we'll save the final point for Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, who said: "With Arne Engels once again warming the bench and his replacement Nygren seemingly cementing his place in midfield at a fraction of the price, it's easy to see why the Celtic board are reluctant to splash the cash. "The only reason fellow big signing Idah is being persevered with is there's no alternative. "I believe Kenny should be given his chance and starting him against Falkirk should be on Rodgers' agenda."
