Black Ferns Sevens star
Michaela Brake
has been named on the wing for her rugby league debut, when NZ Warriors
return to the NRLW
against Sydney Roosters on Saturday.
Coach Ron Griffiths has selected a squad featuring 10 NRLW debutants, including rugby converts Brake, centre Tysha Ikenasio, five-eighth Patricia Maliepo and second-rower Shakira Baker.
Fullback and captain Apii Nicholls is the
only player to previously appear for the Warriors
, as one of the foundation members of the women's programme.
Others to have played in the competition before include centre Emmanita Paki and lock Laishon Albert-Jones - who both won championships under Griffiths at Newcastle Knights - halfback Emily Curtain (Parramatta Eels, Wests Tigers), props Harata Butler (Cronulla Sharks, North Queensland Cowboys), hooker Capri Paekau (Eels) and interchange forward Matekino Gray (Gold Coast Titans).
"We're very excited," Griffiths said. "We have a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and a diverse group of players, with 75 percent of them not playing NRLW in the past 12 months.
"From our perspective, we're really looking forward to going up against a side like the Roosters to get a yardstick of where we're at.
"We're confident we'll be a team that certainly has lots of fun with the football and, defensively, we're going to work very hard for each other."
One surprise selection is teenage prop Ashlee Matapo, 18, who was not among the original squad, but was brought in on a development contract to cover for injuries and unavailabilities.
The Warriors women have not had the benefit of trial matches and will take on the defending champion Roosters in a rematch of their inaugural 2018 game, when the Auckland club toppled the Sydneysiders 10-4.
Warriors:
1 Apii Nicholls (c), 2 Michaela Brake, 3 Tysha Ikenasio, 4 Emmanita Paki, 5 Payton Takimoana, 6 Patricia Maliepo, 7 Emily Curtain, 8 Harata Butler, 9 Capri Paekau, 10 Lavinia Litai, 11 Shakira Baker, 13 Laishon Albert-Jones

'Competition needs them' - Savea's hopes for Moana Pasifika
Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea has spoken publicly for the first time about his hope that the franchise continues despite funding issues which have made headlines recently. Savea was outstanding this season – his first for the Auckland-based side after moving north from the Hurricanes – and his inspirational form and leadership helped Moana Pasifika to its highest ever placing of seventh. They were in the playoffs mix until the final round and notched first ever victories over the Highlanders, Blues and Crusaders. They also beat the Hurricanes. But the franchise, supported by New Zealand Rugby, World Rugby, and Pasifika Medical Association Group, which bought the franchise last year, is not on solid ground financially and there are concerns among the rugby community – clearly also held by Savea – that it could struggle to continue. Savea, 31, training with the All Blacks ahead of Saturday's first Test against France in Dunedin, was asked today about the issues surrounding a club that had contributed to what he has described as his most enjoyable season of rugby. ADVERTISEMENT 'You saw what the team did for New Zealand and the people,' Savea said. 'It would be a huge loss if Moana wasn't in any rugby competition. Any competition needs them… we're the Lord's team, we're the people's team.' Savea, who recently announced he would serve a sabbatical in Japan next year and therefore not play Super Rugby in 2026, carried an enormous responsibility at Moana Pasifika over the past eight months or so and the workload told. 'I was tired,' he said. 'I probably didn't realise at the time but I was fatigued. But the heart was full. When the heart and spirit is full it kind of takes over your body… it was nice to take a breath and relax and come back in here and get stuck into it.' Coming back into the All Blacks environment was no hardship, however. 'It's what it demands of you… when the purpose is clear and strong you do everything you can to turn up. We've spent the last couple of days coming together as one and that's what works for me.' Ardie Savea signs autographs after Moana's final match of the season - a loss to the Hurricanes in Wellington. (Source: Photosport) One of the more contentions decisions the selectors must make this week is the make-up of the loose forwards, as well as the identity of their No.10 and the left wing/midfield mix. ADVERTISEMENT With Wallace Sititi out of the series due to an ankle injury and Luke Jacobson set to miss the first Test due to concussion protocols following the Super Rugby Pacific final, Savea, Samipeni Finau and Du'Plessi Kirifi are the only loose forwards available from the original 33-man squad. Christian Lio-Willie and Dalton Papali'i have joined the squad as injury cover and at least one will play in Dunedin. It is possible that the selectors go for Finau, Savea and Kirifi at blindside flanker, No.8 and openside flanker respectively but it's just as possible that they select Lio-Willie as a like-for-like replacement for No.8 Sititi and pick Finau and Savea as flankers. That would leave Kirifi on the bench as an impact player – a role he is likely to fill in the short to medium term. Asked about his willingness to play No.7 after playing there for Moana this year and starting his Test career there, Savea replied: 'I don't have a say do I? Just wherever Razor needs me or where I fit in best for the team… if that's 12 or 13 I'd do my best. 'The loosie roles are quite interchangeable now on the field… it's how collectively as a trio you work together and that's what I want to build as a loose trio with the All Blacks – to be able to connect well and work together." Of Kirifi, with whom he played at the Hurricanes, and Crusader Lio-Willie, Savea said: 'They've played awesome and they're in here for a reason… the All Blacks is a different level and it's on to us to get around each other and best prepare for Test level.' Robertson, who will announce his team on Thursday, may start Beauden Barrett at No.10 ahead of Damian McKenzie, with Rieko Ioane a good chance to start on the left wing, with Billy Proctor at centre.

All Blacks countdown: The French Connection
Theo Attissogbe for the France XV. Photo:All Blacks v France Kick-off: 7:05pm Saturday 5 July Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin Live blog updates on RNZ Analysis - Ever since it was announced that France would be the All Blacks' first opponents of the season, there's been plenty chat about whether they'll be a threat or a classic French Farce. One thing is for certain: no one in this part of the world really knows much about them. That's due to the fact that while coach Fabien Galthié's side is missing players from the Top 14 final, we can't watch the competition on TV here anyway. Galthié has acknowledged just how much of an uphill battle this will be, telling Midi Olympique that "This tour is the toughest we've ever played with this French team. So I sent this message to each of the selected players: 'We have a challenge that seems impossible. Do you want to be part of it?'." Rugby writer James Harrington is based in Castres, one of France's rugby hotbeds, agrees with Galthié's assessment but says that the squad that has arrived in New Zealand isn't a complete bunch of scrubs. "Only three players have 50 plus caps, and another two have more than 20," said Harrington, who highlighted the Antoine Dupont-less halfback group as ones to watch. Nolan Le Garrec celebrates his try during the Guinness Six Nations 2024 match between France and England. Photo:"Nolan Le Garrec (who scored the World Rugby Try of the Year in 2024) has just finished a big season with Racing 92, scoring 269 points with 14 tries. Baptiste Jauneau is stocky and feisty like Dupont and works so hard. Kicking's not his strongest suit, but it's developing." Up front there's a couple of interesting stories, with Paul Mallez the first ever player from ProD2 side Provence to be called up to the national squad and Georgian-born fellow prop from Perpignan Giorgi Beria capped last year on a similarly understrength tour of Argentina. "The French second tier is a notoriously tough scrum school, especially for front rows, while Beria was in the 2019 France U20 squad that won the WR U20 Championship." said Harrington. "I reckon NZ fans will like Lyon's Mickaël Guillard. Mostly plays second row after stepping up as cover for the injured Emmanuel Meafou but pops up across the loose forwards from time to time. He hauled in English winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso (who scored against the All Blacks last year), who's no slouch." The backs provide the easiest to find highlights, particularly Pau wing Theo Attissogbe. The 20-year-old was part of France' 2023 U-20 side that convincingly beat New Zealand and went on to hammer Ireland in that year's championship final. Attissogbe also scored three tries in two games in this year's Six Nations, but another one to watch is a midfielder who was also eligible to represent England. Emilien Gailleton. Photo:"Emilien Gailleton is a seriously rapid 21-year-old, born in Croydon, just south of London to a French dad and English mum. He's currently with Pau - but will be an early target for recruiters from July 1, when he officially enters the last year of his current deal and they can legally talk to him. Toulouse, La Rochelle and Toulon are all reportedly very interested. He's scored eight tries in his last six outings for Pau." While there were high hopes that the weekend's dramatic Top 14 final concluding the French domestic season would result in the release of some big name players, unfortunately that's not the case. Toulouse's Pierre-Louis Barassi and Joshua Brennan, and Bordeleau-Begles' Pierre Bochaton, Nicolas Depoortere, and Bastien Vergnes-Taillefer are all joining the squad. But while they are all solid club players, it's a far cry from the likes of Romain Ntamack, Gregory Aldritt, Thomas Ramos and Damian Penaud. It's those players, along with Dupont, who have tormented the All Blacks into three straight losses over the last four seasons. Their absence, along with many others, are why it'll be a minor miracle if that streak continues this weekend.
