Wildfire smoke may follow storms, severe weather in eastern US

Yahoo3 days ago
An active pattern for thunderstorms will continue across portions of the Eastern United States, producing damaging wind gusts and flooding, AccuWeather meteorologists say.
The combination of lingering moisture and daytime heating will allow spotty thunderstorms to develop over the East on Saturday. A front approaching from the West will promote more widespread thunderstorms and the risk of severe weather across the region on Sunday and into the start of the new week. Thunderstorms that develop can be slow-moving in nature, unloading immense rainfall and raising the risk of flooding.
"One issue with storms in the summertime is when they erupt, they can grow skyward and move very slowly at the same time--just like they do in tropical rainforests or jungles. This has the potential to unload a tremendous amount of rain," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.Have the app? Unlock AccuWeather Alerts™ with Premium+
Individuals from the Carolinas to New England are urged to monitor the weather over the coming days and have many ways to receive warnings and be aware of the quickest means to get to safety.
Severe risk to focus across the East
As the front slowly makes its way across the East, it will interact with warm, moist air, promoting the risk of severe thunderstorms both on Sunday and Monday.
The zone where severe thunderstorms are expected on Sunday will stretch from far eastern Oklahoma into western New York. Hazards, including hail, localized damaging wind gusts and flooding, can occur in any thunderstorm.
Those traveling on the road or in the air, including along interstates 40, 80 and 81, will need to prepare for potential delays due to thunderstorms.
By Monday, the risk will shift east, focusing on the area from North Carolina into far western Maine. Localized damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and flooding will again be the main hazards of concern.
Thunderstorms are expected to impact portions of the I-95 corridor, including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City during the evening commute, which can slow travel.
Smoke slated to return to the East next week
Smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba will be ushered into the Midwest and Great Lakes regions through the weekend, causing a hazy sky and air quality alerts in the thickest smoke.
The same front that will spark severe thunderstorms into early week will steer the smoke farther east into portions of the Northeast by the beginning of the week.
The thickest smoke is expected to be concentrated from upstate New York through western Maine and into parts of Canada, including Ottawa and Montreal. In this zone, air quality can be reduced, resulting in potentially hazardous conditions for susceptible populations such as the elderly and those with respiratory ailments. Individuals are encouraged to avoid spending large amounts of time outside and take breaks often.
Haze can be noticeable in the sky elsewhere across the Northeast, reaching as far south as Philadelphia and Baltimore. Smoke in the atmosphere can enhance sunrises and sunsets, providing more vibrant colors.

The sky's the limit when it comes to hospitality packages for 2026 World Cup

TORONTO - Tickets to the 2026 World Cup are now available for Canadians, although only for those willing to pay a premium. The first wave of tickets comes in deluxe packages, provided by On Location, FIFA's official tournament hospitality partner. They range from $2,500 for a single-game package to the sky's the limit. Canadians will have two other ways to get match tickets, without the frills. Canada Soccer is expected to unveil its revamped Canada Red program at the end of July, with different membership levels offering access to a lottery for Canadian game tickets. The more expensive the membership, the better the odds of getting a ticket. FIFA says its ticketing program, which has taken the form of a worldwide lottery in the past, will launch in the fall. On Location is willing to make your sporting dream come true, at a price. Leah Linke, senior vice-president of event production for On Location, recalls a Super Bowl package for a well-heeled client who requested brunch with former star quarterback Tom Brady in a two-level private suite with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. 'I can't divulge how much they paid,' she said. Starting Monday in Canada and Mexico, On Location offers a variety of World Cup packages, with the quality of seats and hospitality service improving as the price rises. 'We are not selling tickets. We are selling experiences of a lifetime,' said Linke. 'We all know you go through life, you collect all these materialistic things,' she added. 'But when it's all said and done, what we all end up with are memories. Memories of our families, memories with our friends. And that is what our goal is — to create memories, once-in-a-lifetime memories.' On Location offers single-match and venue series packages for all games. You can also curate your own package or follow your team in the early rounds (although not for co-hosts Canada, Mexico and the U.S.). Different packages offer access to a variety of private lounges, ranging from $2,500 per person for single-match access to the so-called FIFA Pavilion (outside the stadium) to $5,350 for the in-stadium Pitchside Lounge, with several other options in between. Each package offers a ticket and access to the lounge three hours before kickoff, during halftime, and two hours after the final whistle. 'All you can eat, all you can drink,' said Linke. The higher the price, the better the seat, easier access to stadium and lounge, the more premium food, drink and entertainment and the better the gift that comes with the package. Private suites are also available, although On Location did not provide pricing. If money is no concern, On Location offers the 'Platinum Access Program.' Flights or helicopter needed? No problem. Looking to take the pitch after the game to take a penalty against a star goalkeeper? They can make it happen. 'This truly is the creme de la creme … The sky really is the limit,' said Linke. Linke boasts that On Location is partnering with Michelin-star and James Beard Award-winning chefs, plus a consortium of 'guest experience experts' and a 'team of mixologists.' She expects On Location to service more than a million fans across the tournament's 104 games at 16 different venues. The expanded 48-team competition features 13 games each in Canada and Mexico and the remaining 78 in the U.S. The 28th-ranked Canadian men will open June 12 at Toronto's BMO Field before shifting to Vancouver for its remaining group games June 18 and 24 at B.C. Place Stadium. Should Canada win its group, it would stay in Vancouver for the Round-of-32 game and, if it wins that, stay put for the Round-of-16 contest. On Location was originally spawned by the NFL, looking to take advantage of the secondary market. It was eventually purchased and expanded by Endeavor Group Holdings, formerly William Morris Endeavor and WME-IMG, in January 2020 for a reported US$660 million. Linke says On Location provides hospitality to some 36,000 on Super Bowl Sunday. It was also the official hospitality partner for the Paris Olympics. It will repeat the role at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, and 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. It also provides hospitality packages from everything from Major League Baseball and NASCAR to the UFC and WWE. On Location has already started selling tournament packages south of the border. 'And I've got to tell you, they are already flying off the shelf,' said Linke. —- This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 14, 2025

Is it legal to use a burner phone to cross US borders?

A burner phone might be one way to avoid having your personal data scrutinized when crossing U.S. borders, even if you're not hiding anything. Travelers are reportedly facing higher rates of inspections when attempting to enter the country as U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents follow directives to bolster national security. Any traveler – whether a citizen or visitor – can be subject to an inspection, which is meant to verify their identity and assess any risk of crime or contraband, according to the agency. During the more common basic search, agents are legally allowed to search information stored directly on electronic devices, including photos and deleted folders, without a warrant. For those applying for a visa, social media profiles have to be made public in order to be examined by the Department of Homeland Security. CBP Assistant Commissioner Hilton Beckham previously told USA TODAY, the agency "follows strict policies and directives when it comes to searching electronic media." However, more reports of detainments and deportations during what legal experts are calling a period of "more aggressive" enforcement and questioning at the border are worrying some travelers, who fear that certain content on their phone could get them in trouble. In April, several major Canadian institutions advised their staff to only take a burner phone if they need to travel to the U.S. CBP did not respond to USA TODAY's request for comment. Travelers, even U.S. citizens, are facing newfound fears over more thorough vetting at borders, along with what some legal experts call "a chilling effect" on our freedom of expression. To limit what can be looked at during border searches, they may be considering packing a burner phone with them instead of their regular one. Under this idea, travelers would leave their primary phone at home and bring a secondary phone with minimal personal information stored on it instead. This device would be exclusively "a travel phone, and has very limited functionality," said Esha Bhandari, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project. She added, "We've heard anecdotally that some travelers may be wanting to do that more." Here's what people should know about traveling with a burner phone. Is it illegal to travel with a burner phone? No, it's not illegal to use a travel phone, even if it seems suspicious to have a nearly empty phone. "At the outset, there's no legal barrier to traveling with certain digital information," Bhandari said. Basically, this means your phone doesn't have to contain all your information to enter the country. In fact, one of the government's legal defenses asserting these searches aren't an invasion of privacy is that travelers can control what they have on their devices, according to Bhandari. Some courts have had sidebar discussions that it's akin to having the contents of your luggage searched. "So the government itself acknowledges that if travelers can control what they bring, then that must mean that you can travel without a device that has your everyday things on it, right?" she said. Legal organizations like the ACLU and Electronic Frontier Foundation have argued that our devices store much more information than that, making these searches more intrusive. Should I travel with a burner phone? Each traveler needs to make their own risk assessment to determine whether it's beneficial to travel with a secondary device, according to Bhandari. Some people who carry sensitive work or personal information on their phone may find it worthwhile, while others who already have a separate work phone can leave one at home, she continued. "For other travelers, having a separate device may not be feasible, but they can still choose what data to physically retain on their device before they travel." Keep in mind that your rights at the border can vary depending on your immigration status, so the outcome could vary. So while U.S. citizens and legal residents must still be allowed into the country, visitors and non-visa holders could be turned away. "No traveler is obligated to have all their personal information on them," Bhandari said. "But I think, unfortunately, in the current environment, travelers do have to be aware of that risk." Despite your immigration status, if you refuse to have your phone searched, agents have the authority to confiscate it for weeks or even months. Other tips for privacy at US borders If you're still on the fence about traveling with a burner phone, here's what Bhandari recommends during border searches:
