Coast Guard begins salvage operation and investigates cause of boat collision that killed two girls
MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard was beginning a salvage operation on Tuesday while investigating the cause of a boat collision near Miami that left two girls dead, officials said.
Capt. Frank Florio, commander of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami, assured the victims' family members during a news conference that the Coast Guard and its partners would do everything in their power to learn what caused the crash.
'We owe you answers, and we are committed to finding them," Florio said.
Officials didn't immediately identify any of the victims or release a cause for the crash.
The collision between a barge and a sailboat occurred around 11 a.m. Monday in Biscayne Bay, between Miami and Miami Beach. All six people on the sailboat, a teenage sailing camp counselor and five children, ended up in the water. They were in their last week of a camp for children aged 7 to 15, according to the Miami Yacht Club.
All six were pulled from the water, and four were rushed to a Miami hospital, officials said. A 7-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl were pronounced dead shortly after arriving, while two other girls, ages 8 and 11, remained in critical condition Tuesday. A 19-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were rescued but not hospitalized.
Local media and prominent TV personalities in Argentina identified the 7-year-old girl killed in the boating crash as Mila Yankelevich, the daughter of director Tomas Yankelevich and actress Sofia Reca and granddaughter of the prominent Argentine television producers Gustavo Yankelevich and Cris Morena.
Marcelo Tinelli, a popular TV host and friend of the family, posted on X that he was 'devastated' by Mila's death.
'I can't believe it,' he wrote. 'My immense love to the entire family, who are part of my life.'
Actor and presenter Nicolás Vázquez, currently starring in the musical 'Rocky' produced by Gustavo Yankelevich, expressed his heartbreak on Instagram.
'Mila's passing is one of those tragedies that hurts to the soul,' he wrote. Addressing Yankelevich he added: 'Even if we are not blood relatives, what we feel makes us brothers.'
Across the U.S. last year, there were over 550 deaths in recreational boating, but only a sliver of those — 43 — were caused by vessels crashing into each other, according to Coast Guard statistics.

Ozzy Osbourne's hilarious occupation on death certificate revealed

Even in death, he gets the last laugh. The surprising occupation listed on Ozzy Osbourne's death certificate has been revealed alongside the late Black Sabbath legend's cause of death. According to the official document first obtained by the New York Times on Tuesday, Osbourne passed away from cardiac arrest, acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease and Parkinson's disease on July 22 at the age of 76. 10 Ozzy Osbourne performing during an early Black Sabbath concert. AP That was not all, though, because it also revealed that the 'Crazy Train' singer's daughter, Aimee Osbourne, 41, listed her late father's profession as 'songwriter, performer and rock legend' when she submitted the document to a registry in London. Although Osbourne's family previously confirmed the news of his passing in a statement to The Post, they did not disclose his cause of death. 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,' they said at the time. 10 Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne attend the Pride of Britain Awards at the Grosvenor House on October 30, 2017, in London, England. The heavy metal pioneer was later laid to rest near the lake of his Buckinghamshire home on Thursday, July 31. More than 100 guests reportedly gathered for the private ceremony – including Ozzy's family, friends, former Sabbath bandmates and other music industry A-listers like Marilyn Manson, Metallica's James Hetfield and Yungblud. 10 Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off of a rubber chicken on April 28, 1982. 'I honestly don't care what they play at my funeral,' he said in 2011. 'But I do want to make sure it's a celebration, not a mope-fest.' 'I'd also like some pranks: maybe the sound of knocking inside the coffin; or a video of me asking my doctor for a second opinion on his diagnosis of death,' Osbourne added. 'There'll be no harping on the bad times.'

The 1 Restaurant Jessica Biel Won't Allow Her Kids to Eat and Why

Jessica Biel says she's not the strictest parent when it comes to what foods she allows her kids to eat, but there is one restaurant that she's forbidden in her home. 'McDonald's!' the "Better Sister" star, 43, told Parade. 'I'm like, 'Sorry, guys, I'm not doing it.' They don't get McDonald's. I just feel like I don't know what's going on with (the) quality of that food. It's stuff like that that I'm like, 'No, we're not.' Let's go have a great burger and fries at a fancy place. I'd rather pay more for you to have something fancy than something like that.' 'I guess I'm not crazy, rigid and strict, but that would be something that, if they asked me for, I would just be like, 'Next! Next place. Next down the line!'' she added. Biel shares sons Silas, 10, and Phineas, born in the summer of 2020, with husband Justin Timberlake. The couple tied the knot in 2012. The former '7th Heaven' star thanked Timberlake for being 'the rock' of their family in a heartfelt Father's Day post in June 2024. She shared a photo of Silas and Phineas embracing Timberlake on Instagram, writing, "You're so many things to so many people. But to us you are THE ROCK." 'The rock we climb on, we lean against,' she continued. 'The rock that shades us from the sun. And when we recline on you, as we always do, hopefully our butts will keep you eternally grounded and warm. We LOVE YOU.' A few months before, Biel shared a few snaps of Silas and Phineas modeling some of the clothing sold during their dad's 'Forget Tomorrow World Tour." She also included a shot of her and the former 'N Sync singer sharing a sweet moment together. 'It's a family affair y'all,' she captioned the post. In 2015, Biel told TODAY that being a mom was an 'amazing, amazing experience' and also 'the hardest job in the world.' 'I've never been more thankful and grateful to my own mother,' said the former '7th Heaven' star. 'Oh, my gosh, I'm going to call her right after this actually and just thank her. What you have to do for your kid — it's an amazing responsibility and the biggest joy ever.' This article was originally published on Solve the daily Crossword

A man inside Chicago's Bean? Viral hoax floods politician with calls.

"I appreciate lighthearted parody as much as the next guy," Chicago Alderman Brendan Riley said in a statement. "However, this online hoax has led to a heavy uptick in calls to my office." Have you heard about the man inside The Bean? A small group of protestors have gone viral over the past week for claiming there is a man living inside of Chicago's Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park, commonly known as "The Bean." Sporting all-black outfits and wielding homemade cardboard signs, the group has been handing out flyers and encouraging the public to contact Chicago Alderman Brendan Riley to "free" the man inside the sculpture. The protests began during Lollapalooza, which ran July 31 through Aug. 3. "There is a man inside The Bean," one of the protesters said in a video that has garnered thousands of views on social media. "We're calling for his immediate release. In 2004, Anish Kapoor, the chief architect of The Bean, stole a baby and put that baby inside The Bean. We are calling for the immediate release of the man trapped inside The Bean, so please, spread the good word." In a statement provided to USA TODAY, Riley said the "online hoax" has led to an influx of calls, proving to be a "distraction for my office from the real work we do for the 42nd Ward and City of Chicago each day." An Instagram account dedicated to the viral protest, Man in Bean, had garnered more than 23,600 followers as of Tuesday, Aug. 5. The Man in Bean team did not immediately respond for comment on the protests when contacted by USA TODAY via Instagram on Aug. 5. Designed by Kapoor, Cloud Gate was constructed between 2004 and 2006. The sculpture was made using computer technology to cut 168 stainless steel plates, which were then pieced together, like a puzzle, on-site, according to the Millennium Park Foundation. The massive sculpture is 33 feet high and weighs about 110 tons. What are Chicago officials saying? While Riley said the lighthearted protest has resulted in a strain on his office, he also provided a tongue-in-cheek response. "I am happy to confirm that a man has not been trapped inside Cloud Gate (a.k.a 'the Bean') for the past 21 years," he said. "In fact, the man was freed years ago. Further, we can neither confirm nor deny that Soldier Field is actually a flying saucer secretly relocated from Area 51 back in 2003." Is there really a man inside The Bean? Despite the ongoing protests, there is no evidence that a man lives inside The Bean. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. Story idea? Email her at gcross@
