Coast Guard begins salvage operation and investigates cause of boat collision that killed two girls
MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard was beginning a salvage operation on Tuesday while investigating the cause of a boat collision near Miami that left two girls dead, officials said.
Capt. Frank Florio, commander of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami, assured the victims' family members during a news conference that the Coast Guard and its partners would do everything in their power to learn what caused the crash.
'We owe you answers, and we are committed to finding them," Florio said.
Officials didn't immediately identify any of the victims or release a cause for the crash.
The collision between a barge and a sailboat occurred around 11 a.m. Monday in Biscayne Bay, between Miami and Miami Beach. All six people on the sailboat, a teenage sailing camp counselor and five children, ended up in the water. They were in their last week of a camp for children aged 7 to 15, according to the Miami Yacht Club.
All six were pulled from the water, and four were rushed to a Miami hospital, officials said. A 7-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl were pronounced dead shortly after arriving, while two other girls, ages 8 and 11, remained in critical condition Tuesday. A 19-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were rescued but not hospitalized.
Local media and prominent TV personalities in Argentina identified the 7-year-old girl killed in the boating crash as Mila Yankelevich, the daughter of director Tomas Yankelevich and actress Sofia Reca and granddaughter of the prominent Argentine television producers Gustavo Yankelevich and Cris Morena.
Marcelo Tinelli, a popular TV host and friend of the family, posted on X that he was 'devastated' by Mila's death.
'I can't believe it,' he wrote. 'My immense love to the entire family, who are part of my life.'
Actor and presenter Nicolás Vázquez, currently starring in the musical 'Rocky' produced by Gustavo Yankelevich, expressed his heartbreak on Instagram.
'Mila's passing is one of those tragedies that hurts to the soul,' he wrote. Addressing Yankelevich he added: 'Even if we are not blood relatives, what we feel makes us brothers.'
Across the U.S. last year, there were over 550 deaths in recreational boating, but only a sliver of those — 43 — were caused by vessels crashing into each other, according to Coast Guard statistics.

'Ketamine Queen' accused of selling Matthew Perry fatal dose gets September trial date

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman charged with selling Matthew Perry the dose of ketamine that killed him is headed for a September trial. Jasveen Sangha's trial — the only one forthcoming in the death of the 'Friends' star after four other defendants reached plea agreements with prosecutors — is now set to begin Sept. 23 after an order Tuesday from a federal judge in Los Angeles. The 42-year-old Sangha, who prosecutors say was known to her customers as 'The Ketamine Queen,' is charged with five counts of ketamine distribution, including one count of distribution resulting in death. She has pleaded not guilty and has been held in federal custody since her arrest last year. Her trial had been scheduled to start Aug. 19, but the judge postponed it for the fourth time since her April 2024 indictment after both sides agreed it should be moved. Sangha's lawyers said they needed the time to go through the huge amount of evidence they have received from the prosecution and to finish their own investigation. Sangha was one of the two biggest targets in the investigation of Perry's death, along with Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who pleaded guilty to ketamine distribution last month. Perry's personal assistant, his friend and another doctor also entered guilty pleas and are cooperating with prosecutors. All are awaiting sentencing. Perry, who was found dead at age 54 at his home on Oct. 23, 2023, had been getting ketamine from his regular doctor for treatment of depression, an increasingly common off-label use for the surgical anesthetic. But prosecutors say when the doctor wouldn't give Perry as much as he wanted, he illegally sought more from Plasencia, then still more from Sangha, who they say presented herself as "a celebrity drug dealer with high quality goods.' Perry's assistant and friend said in their plea agreements that they acted as middlemen to buy large amounts of ketamine for Perry from Sangha, including 25 vials for $6,000 in cash a few days before his death. Prosecutors allege that included the doses that killed Perry. Andrew Dalton, The Associated Press

Ozzy Osbourne's hilarious occupation on death certificate revealed

Even in death, he gets the last laugh. The surprising occupation listed on Ozzy Osbourne's death certificate has been revealed alongside the late Black Sabbath legend's cause of death. According to the official document first obtained by the New York Times on Tuesday, Osbourne passed away from cardiac arrest, acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease and Parkinson's disease on July 22 at the age of 76. 10 Ozzy Osbourne performing during an early Black Sabbath concert. AP That was not all, though, because it also revealed that the 'Crazy Train' singer's daughter, Aimee Osbourne, 41, listed her late father's profession as 'songwriter, performer and rock legend' when she submitted the document to a registry in London. Although Osbourne's family previously confirmed the news of his passing in a statement to The Post, they did not disclose his cause of death. 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,' they said at the time. 10 Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne attend the Pride of Britain Awards at the Grosvenor House on October 30, 2017, in London, England. The heavy metal pioneer was later laid to rest near the lake of his Buckinghamshire home on Thursday, July 31. More than 100 guests reportedly gathered for the private ceremony – including Ozzy's family, friends, former Sabbath bandmates and other music industry A-listers like Marilyn Manson, Metallica's James Hetfield and Yungblud. 10 Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off of a rubber chicken on April 28, 1982. 'The day was incredibly emotional,' an insider told The Sun last week. 'Pictures of Ozzy were dotted throughout the house, and a photograph of him was given to everyone who attended to take home with them.' 'Ozzy wanted his final place of rest to be at home, and he is buried at a beautiful point on the lake,' they added. 10 Ozzy Osbourne signs autographs on September 10, 2022, in Long Beach, California. The 'Paranoid' singer's widow, Sharon, 72, their kids, Aimee, Kelly, 40, and Jack, 39, and Osbourne's son from a previous relationship, Louis, 50, joined thousands of fans to say farewell to the beloved music icon. Each of Osbourne's loved ones wore a different item in his honor, and heartbreaking photos from the cortège showed Sharon hugging Kelly and holding Jack's hands as she broke down in tears in front of a memorial for her late husband. 10 Ozzy Osbourne performing with Black Sabbath at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J., on Aug. 4, 2013. 'I honestly don't care what they play at my funeral,' he said in 2011. 'But I do want to make sure it's a celebration, not a mope-fest.' 'I'd also like some pranks: maybe the sound of knocking inside the coffin; or a video of me asking my doctor for a second opinion on his diagnosis of death,' Osbourne added. 'There'll be no harping on the bad times.'
