PSG, Chelsea Vie for Club World Title, $40M Prize Money

The 2025 Club World Cup wraps up Sunday with a finals showdown between European soccer giants Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. The winning club will earn $40 million in prize money, along with the new Voyager-inspired Tiffany trophy. The runner-up receives $30 million.
This is the first expanded version of the men's Club World Cup with 32 teams, up from seven. The U.S.-hosted event has been plagued by problems, including the heat, spotty fields, weak attendance and injured stars. President Donald Trump told reporters this week he'd attend Sunday's game at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.

Chelsea won the 2021 Club World Cup and was runner-up in 2012. This is PSG's first appearance in the final.
The $1 billion prize pool is double the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and Brazil's Fluminense is arguably the biggest winner of the revamped club tournament. It lost 2-0 to Chelsea in the semifinals, but the club earned prize money of roughly $60 million, nearly matching their 2024 operating revenue of $72 million, per Sports Value.
PSG and Chelsea have earned $78 million and $76 million through the semifinals, with the payouts for the final round pushing both squads over $100 million for the month-long event. The tally will help fund transfer spending for the two clubs as they set their 2025-26 squads.

It will also help offset operating losses for the teams. PSG lost $60 million during the 2023-24 season after player trading, but it was better than the $117 million and $400 million shortfalls the previous two years. Chelsea lost $89 million during the 2023-24 season if you exclude the $250 million 'profit' on the sale of Chelsea's women's team from one ownership entity to a related one.
PSG ranked No. 8 in Sportico's soccer team valuations at $4.26 billion, while Chelsea was two spots lower at $3.57 billion. PSG's 2023-24 revenue was the third highest in the sport, behind only Real Madrid ($1.13 billion) and Manchester City ($901 million). The past season's revenue will get a boost from its first Champions League title on top of its two domestic crowns, which made the French club just the ninth European team to complete the 'treble,' with Barcelona and Bayern Munich both pulling it off twice.
Chelsea's revenue was $590 million, and it lags PSG in all three broad buckets: broadcast, a category that includes Champions League winnings ($265 million vs. $206 million); commercial ($422 million vs. $284 million); and matchday ($184 million vs. $101 million).
Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) bought control of PSG in 2011 at a roughly $100 million valuation. It owned 100% of the club until Arctos Partners bought a 12.5% stake in 2023 at a $4.3 billion valuation, per the Financial Times. Chelsea's owners—Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital—paid $3.16 billion for the team in 2022. Boehly and Arctos both own stakes in MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers.

Defi Tokens Are Soaring, Leaving Behind OG Coins Like LTC, BCH and XMR

Bitcoin's surge to an all time high on Thursday evoked mixed reactions from altcoins, with some outperforming the largest cryptocurrency by market cap and others lagging behind. And that's split along industry lines. Tokens associated with decentralized finance (DeFi) and those from layer-2 blockchains are outperforming as investors transition to a risk-on approach. Others, such as tron (TRX), bitcoin cash (BCH), litecoin (LTC) and monero (XMR) are, in comparison, barely moving. Even solana (SOL), the darling of the previous drive to record highs, seems to be taking a back seat, rising just 3.9% while the likes of sei (SEI), ethena (ENA) and optimism (OP) are celebrating gains of as much as 28%. "Altcoins are leading the pack in this latest rally," Thomas Perfumo, Kraken's global economist, said in an email. A drop in bitcoin dominance is "reinforcing a broad-based rally with altcoins leading the charge." During the 2017 and 2021 runs to record highs, bitcoin dominance — a measure of BTC's share of the total crypto market —rose rapidly. On Thursday's rally, it fell to 63.5% from 64%, indicating a shift in emphasis toward the altcoin market Crypto markets are cyclical by nature. They run without interruption 24 hours a day against a backdrop of high volatility and low liquidity which can create an emotional trading environment. In previous cycles, altcoins often moved in unison, rising as bitcoin consolidated and dropping en masse when it rose or fell. This time, however, seems different, possibly due to the increased participation of institutions in the the industry. The rise in DeFi tokens can be attributed to increasing institutional interest in ether (ETH), which could pave the way for a search for yield with firms battling to secure the highest returns. The same can be said for layer-2 networks. As institutions run into the Ethereum blockchain's issues with latency and efficiency, they may consider networks like Arbitrum that allow liquidity to flow from decentralized exchanges to staking protocols at a fast rate. That network's ARB token is up 15% in the past 24 hours. Still, Petr Kozyakov, CEO at payments firm Mercuryo, said the rise in altcoins will be short-lived. "While altcoins are also in the green with Ethereum spiking past the $3,000 mark, the underlying 'orange pill' narrative remains steadfastly in place," he said. "Bitcoin's growing status as a store of value is one that more and more big players and institutions are simply unable to ignore." That's not a narrative that finds much support from Arthur Hayes, the BitMEX founder turned fund manager. 'Get ready for a monster alt season,' he told his followers on X after predicting that ETH would reach $10,000 this cycle. If Hayes' prediction holds true, bitcoin could face short-term difficulty as liquidity will inevitably flow into the altcoin market as traders attempt to capture speculative gains. This could also be a hammer blow to the old-school crypto coins, which all lack major catalysts for a boost. Sign in to access your portfolio

MLB Draft: Top pick Eli Willits, 17, to build power with Nationals

July 14 (UPI) -- Switch-hitting shortstop Eli Willits is lauded as exceedingly polished at the plate, but the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft says he plans to improve as a power hitter while with the Washington Nationals. Willits spoke about his desire to improve in that area Sunday, moments after the Nationals made him the youngest No. 1 overall pick in an MLB Draft since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1987. The move to select the 17-year-old infielder from Broxton High School in Fort Cobb, Okla., that early was a bit of a shock, as experts expected either shortstop Ethan Holliday or pitcher Kade Anderson to be the first player picked. Advertisement "I'm just a player that's going to go out there and give everything I've got, just like everyone else," Willits said on the MLB Network broadcast from Atlanta. "I feel like I have a good hit ability and I'm going to take that to the next level. I feel like my power is up and coming, but I needed to get into an organization like the Nationals that can help develop that and take that to the next level." The 6-foot-1, 180-pound infielder previously committed to Oklahoma, but now will likely be headed into the Nationals' minor league system. He hit .471 with 14 doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 34 RBIs, 27 walks, 47 stolen bases and 56 runs last season, when he struck out only four times. Advertisement "I'm just excited and thankful for the Nationals organization for giving me this chance," Willits said. "I want to thank God for everything, but at the end of the day I'm just ready to get out there and get to work." The Nationals made Willits the top pick about a week after they fired longtime general manager Mike Rizzo and Dave Martinez. Interim general manager Mike DeBartolo DeBartolo, who said he was "empowered" by ownership to make draft and trade deadline decisions, called Willits the Nationals' "top guy throughout the process." "We couldn't be more excited," DeBartolo said. "Eli, he's special player. Great hit tool, makes contact, controls the strike zone. We love his swing, switch hitter, just a clean operation at the plate, with developing power, impact at the plate then just an elite shortstop. Somebody who stays at shortstop, somebody with great range, smooth hands, great arm, accurate. You add on top of that, intangibles, confidence, work ethic and maturity that's off the charts. Advertisement "You put all that together. It's rare to get somebody that is the best hitter in the draft and best fielder in the draft. We just felt that was an opportunity we couldn't pass up." The Los Angeles Angels selected former UC Santa Barbara right-handed pitcher Tyler Bremner at No. 2 overall. Anderson, a left-handed pitcher out of LSU, landed with the Seattle Mariners at No. 3. The Colorado Rockies snagged Holliday, a third baseman from Stillwater High School in Stillwater, Okla., at No. 4. Tennessee left-handed pitcher Liam Doyle went to the St. Louis Cardinals at No. 5. Right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez (Pittsburgh Pirates), shortstop Aiva Arquette (Miami Marlins), shortstop JoJo Parker (Toronto Blue Jays), shortstop Steele Hall (Cincinnati Reds) and shortstop Billy Carlson (Chicago White Sox) rounded out the Top 10 picks. All Day 1 selections can be found here. Rounds 4 through 20 of the 2025 MLB Draft will air at 11:30 a.m. EDT Monday on and

Celtics-Bulls trade pitch sends $100 million Boston guard to Chicago for lousy return

Rumors have suggested that the Boston Celtics could still look to move on from Anfernee Simons, despite recently acquiring him in a deal for Jrue Holiday. The Celtics did that move to save money, and it made perfect sense from Brad Stevens' perspective. The Celtics knew coming into the off-season that they had to cut costs in some way, and they did that by moving on from the two-time NBA champion. Advertisement However, by moving Simons, the Celtics could further do that. In a recent trade idea from Sports Illustrated, they'd accomplished just that once again. The deal would involve moving on from Simons to the Chicago Bulls. Hawks Receive: Sam Hauser Celtics Receive: Kevin Huerter, Julian Phillips, a 2026 2nd round pick (via ATL), and a 2032 2nd round pick (via ATL) Bulls Receive: Anfernee Simons 'This is another cost cutting move and nothing more. Huerter can try and replicate Hauser's production and is on an expiring contract while Phillips is a cheap bench option. This gets Boston under the luxury tax and opens up a lot of money for next season when Tatum will be back,' they wrote. For that reason alone, it makes sense. However, if they believe they have any chance in the Eastern Conference next season, which still might not be out of the question given how talented the Celtics are, it might be better to keep Simons on the roster.
