More layoffs at Google: TV team reportedly slashed by 25 percent as AI and YouTube take centre stage

India Today4 hours ago

Google is once again downsizing its workforce. This time, the company's Google TV division is in the spotlight. According to a new report, around 25 percent of the team working on Google TV has been let go, even as the company prepares to bring major AI updates and new changes to YouTube. Here is everything we know about it. The report, published by The Information, reveals that Google has cut 10 percent of the budget allocated to the Google TV unit. While the exact number of layoffs hasn't been officially confirmed, the report suggests the team originally had close to 300 employees, which means roughly 75 roles may have been affected.advertisementThese changes come at a time when Google is changing its priorities toward artificial intelligence and the future of YouTube as a streaming platform. The company is also preparing to bring its Gemini AI model to the Google TV platform later this year. Gemini is expected to improve how users interact with their TVs by offering more natural and personalised responses, similar to what you would get from a smart assistant.
Despite the cuts, Google still sees the television as an important device in the home. The company has plans to modernise how people use their TVs, making them more helpful, voice-friendly, and AI-powered. But at the same time, the budget reduction may slow down some developments, especially in areas where resources have now been trimmed.Google TV is widely used across many smart TVs, including those from brands like TCL and Hisense, and is also the operating system on the company's own Chromecast devices. However, with less money and a smaller team, it's unclear whether the pace of updates and new features will continue as before.advertisementAnother possible reason behind this change could be Google's growing focus on YouTube. Reports suggest that the tech giant is working on a major redesign that will make YouTube look and feel more like a premium streaming service, similar to Netflix or Disney+. The idea is to push users toward more paid content and shows, which could bring in more revenue for Google in the long run. While the Google TV cuts might raise questions about the future of the platform, reports indicate that the company still plans to hire in certain regions. Besides, in April this year, CNBC reported that some remote employees were told to start coming to the office at least three times a week or risk losing their jobs. The company said that working together in person helps solve problems more effectively, a view it continues to hold as it focuses more on innovation.- Ends

Google launches Advanced AI Search in India through Labs

New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): Google added an AI mode feature to India on Tuesday as an experiment in Labs in English. This feature will provide more advanced reasoning and multimodality, as well as the ability to go deeper through follow-up questions and helpful links to the web. 'Using a custom version of Gemini 2.5 lets you ask longer, more complex or nuanced questions that would have previously required multiple searches,' Google said. Early tester of this AI mode lets you ask much longer queries, two to three times the length of traditional searches. This would be helpful for exploratory questions and for more complicated tasks like comparing products, planning a trip, or understanding complex how-tos. This AI mode feature is multimodal, which means that one can speak their question or even snap a photo to raise a query. Google believes this launch is part of its long-term vision to make finding and accessing information even more effortless in Search. It further adds that this would help people to turn to Google Search to tackle increasingly complex and nuanced questions. 'AI Overviews, now used by over 1.5 billion users monthly, is a testament to this evolution. In our biggest markets like the U.S. and India, it's already driving a more than 10% increase in usage for the types of queries where they appear,' Google said. 'This implies that once people use AI Overviews, they're coming to do more of these types of queries, and what's particularly exciting is how this growth increases over time,' Google added. To access the feature, one must sign up for Labs and try out the AI Mode in Google Search. 'We aim to show an AI-powered response as much as possible, but in cases where we don't have high confidence, you will see a set of web search results,' Google added. (ANI)

Google adds AI tools to Chromebook Plus devices with new update: Details

Google has announced a major ChromeOS update for its Chromebook Plus line, introducing a suite of built-in AI-powered tools designed to make everyday tasks simpler and more efficient. These features are integrated directly into ChromeOS, eliminating the need for third-party apps or extensions. Among the new tools is Text Capture, which allows users to extract text from images—like receipts, handwritten notes, or screenshots—and convert it into editable content. Other additions include Help Me Read, Quick Insert, and Select to Search with Lens. New AI features on Chromebook Plus Select to Search with Lens This feature allows users to learn more about anything they see on their screen. For example, if you spot a product in a photo—like a pair of shoes—you can press and hold using the launcher or screenshot tool to highlight it. Google Lens will then provide details, show similar items, or link to shopping results without needing to open a new browser tab. Text Capture With Text Capture, you can easily extract text from images, whether it's a recipe, note, or event invite. Once captured, the text can be edited, copied, or even added directly to your calendar with one click—saving time on manual entry. Quick Insert key This tool helps enhance documents, slides, and notes by letting you quickly generate AI-created images or insert existing media like emojis and pictures. It's especially helpful during presentations or document creation, all without leaving your workflow. Help Me Read and Simplify This reading assistant does more than summarise content. With the tap of a 'Simplify' button, it can rewrite technical or complex language into clearer, more digestible text—making websites, reports, or documents easier to understand. Other benefits with Chromebook Plus Google is offering 12 months of Google AI Premium at no extra cost with the purchase of a Chromebook Plus. This subscription includes 2TB of cloud storage and access to advanced Gemini AI tools across Gmail, Docs, and other Google apps. Users will also be able to use NotebookLM, Google's AI-powered research and writing assistant, directly from their Chromebook's shelf. Google is also working with developers to bring optimised apps to the Chromebook experience. This includes the Photo editing app Luminar. The upcoming video game Squid Game: Unleashed is being optimised for Chromebooks as well, supporting keyboard and mouse controls and offering exclusive in-game items.
