
Big automakers report US sales jump on pre-tariff consumer surge
"They were able to capitalize on the tariff-induced fear and that drove sales, especially in the early part of the quarter," said Garrett Nelson, equity analyst at CFRA Research.
While the auto industry has been near the center of Trump's efforts to reset global trade, consumers have yet to see significant price increases due to tariffs.
That is because companies have relied on existing inventories that include vehicles imported before tariffs took effect. Prices are expected to rise more in the second half of 2025, but market demand and supply forces could constrain such hikes, analysts said.
GM notched a 7.3 percent rise in vehicle deliveries to 746,588 behind a continued solid performance in pickup trucks and SUVs, as well as good sales of models geared towards customers seeking affordable vehicles.
These include the Chevrolet Equinox and Chevrolet Trax, a lower-priced vehicle imported from South Korea.
Ford, meanwhile, scored a 14.2 percent jump in sales to 612,095, reflecting the boon from a popular program that offered customers employee pricing on many models.
Most of Ford's leading vehicles saw higher sales, including the best-selling pickup F-series, as well as the Ford Explorer SUV.
While Ford had lower sales of its all-electric F-150 Lightning Truck and the Mustang Mach-E, it reported a jump in hybrid vehicle sales.
Higher sales had been expected for both companies, but the increases were slightly more than projected by analysts at Edmunds.com.
At Toyota, sales jumped 7.2 percent to 666,470 autos, with double digit gains in several vehicles, including the Toyota Camry sedan and the Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.
Honda, Kia and Hyundai reported quarterly sales increases of between five and 10 percent.
But Nissan reported a 6.5 percent drop in quarterly sales to 221,441, while Jeep-owner Stellantis was projected by Edmunds to have a 12.8 percent drop to just over 300,000 vehicles.
Pressure from consumers
The United States imposed 25 percent tariffs on imported finished cars in early April.
The Trump administration also enacted a 25 percent tariff on imported auto parts in early May, although White House officials allowed a two-year grace period and stipulated that automakers would not face duplicative tariffs due to a 25 percent levy on imported steel and aluminum.
While retail car prices have not risen significantly, analysts at Cox Automotive last week pointed to a recent ebbing in dealer incentives as evidence of a somewhat tighter market.
Cox Automotive Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke has projected an eight percent rise in prices due to tariffs, adding that "we don't think consumers or fleet buyers are able and willing to accept that added cost," he said at a briefing last week.
Smoke predicted that uncertainty about the economy and whether the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates could lead many buyers to defer purchases.
Nelson said automakers have to be "very careful" with price hikes.
"Things have cooled off from where they were at the beginning of the quarter," he said. "Everything we're seeing suggests that consumers are still very price sensitive."

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the eurozone was 6.3% in May 2025, up from 6.2% in April 2025 and down from 6.4% the prior year. Eurostat also confirmed on Wednesday that the EU unemployment rate was 5.9% in May 2025. That's a flat reading compared to April 2025 and down from 6.0% in May 2024. To look at the underlying figures, 13.052 million people in the EU were unemployed in May 2025, of whom 10.830 million were in the eurozone. Unemployment rates remained relatively stable in major eurozone economies aside from Italy, which saw a jump from 6.1% to 6.5% in May. Historically few people are without work in the eurozone as companies struggle to plug job shortages. This is putting some upward pressure on wage growth, although salaries are still coming down from post-inflation shock highs. 'For the end of the year, we expect wage growth to drop to around 3% or slightly below. With productivity growth picking up, this means that inflationary pressures from the labour market are actually fading and should align with the ECB's 2% inflation target,' said Bert Colijn, ING's chief economist for the Netherlands. 'So, despite a continued heated labour market, wage pressures are likely to pose a lesser immediate risk to the ECB's inflation outlook,' he added. Although interest rates and price pressures have declined over the past year in the eurozone, businesses are also facing added uncertainty from US tariffs and geopolitical tensions. US President Donald Trump has set a deadline of 9 July to secure agreements with trading partners before his so-called 'Liberation Day' tariffs come back into effect after a 90-day pause.

Trump threatens Musk with DOGE and deportation as feud reignites
US President Donald Trump has suggested that his administration would "take a look" at deporting Elon Musk after a feud between the pair reignited in spectacular fashion. As the public war of words between the former political allies escalated on Tuesday, Trump also said that the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — which the tech billionaire formerly spearheaded — could review the massive US government subsidies awarded to Musk's businesses, which include Tesla and SpaceX. When asked by a reporter on Tuesday if he was considering deporting Musk, a South African national and a naturalized US citizen, Trump said: "I don't know, we'll have to take a look." "We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is. DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon," Trump said. "If DOGE looks at Musk, we're going to save a fortune," he added later on Tuesday. Although Musk heavily backed Trump during his reelection campaign and was rewarded with the DOGE project, their alliance appeared to come to a dramatic end a month ago. Trading blows over Trump's bill The beef between the pair began in early June when Musk criticised Trump's tax cuts and spending bill, calling it a "disgusting abomination". Musk lashed out at Republicans for backing the bill, referring to it as "political suicide" and calling the GOP the "Porky Pig party". He also renewed threats to start a new political party, called the "America Party", if the bill passed. The legislation was passed by the US Senate on Tuesday by the narrowest of margins, and now goes back to the House for possible final approval. The US "needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a voice," Musk wrote on Monday on X, the social media platform he owns. That came after Musk, who spent hundreds of millions of dollars on Trump's reelection campaign, said in May that he would likely spend "a lot less" on politics in the future. In response to Musk's latest criticism and threats, Trump on Tuesday suggested that Musk could lose subsidies for his businesses. Is 'AC guilt' justified? French papers divided over use of air conditioning amid heatwave
Russia 's ongoing disinformation efforts are intensifying. Tech magazine Wired says the Kremlin is using free AI tools to fuel "pro-Russian narratives" in many countries overseas, but most notably in Ukraine. This comes in the form of not only videos and pictures, but also QR codes and fake media pages. What's new is the intensity and sophistication of the fakes. The paper cites a report saying that between September 2024 and May 2025, the amount of content "has increased dramatically" and is being viewed by millions of people around the world. But Russia's disinformation efforts aren't just international. Russian independent paper The Moscow Times reports that the Kremlin has launched an online bot campaign inside Russia to justify the country's "biggest utility rate hikes in years". More than 10,000 bot comments were analysed and many of them defended the hikes, framing them as beneficial or simply routine. Some even claimed that wages in Russia are also increasing. Moving to the US, Trump is reigniting fears of a global trade war. This time, the US president is pushing Japan to agree to a trade deal by July 9. The Financial Times reports that Trump is threatening to raise tariffs on Japan again, this time by 30 to 35 percent. Japan Today reports that Trump used the argument that Japan is not importing enough American rice, in a post on Truth Social. The paper says that Trump "singled out Japan in a way he rarely does online". The Wall Street Journal is analysing the divide by looking at the car industry. The American paper cites people familiar with the matter who say that Americans might demand "a cap on the number of vehicles exported by Japan" into the US. But Japanese officials are standing their ground, refusing any deal that preserves Trump's 25 percent auto tariff. The Japan Times' s headline asks the question: "Is the shine coming off the US-Japan 'Golden Age'?" The paper says that as recently as January, Trump described the relationship between the two countries as "a friendship like few others", but not even half a year later, cracks are appearing. The trade talks have stalled, and a distance has opened between the US and Japan on what's happening in the Middle East. Staying in Japan, the rigid hierarchies of Japanese companies are pushing people to find innovative ways out. The Washington Post reports that if you're avoiding your boss, "in Japan, you can hire someone to quit your job for you".
