Kota Kinabalu: Tourism Malaysia (TM) Sabah embarked on a familiarisation trip promoting northern Sabah ahead of Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2026. Themed 'Mansau-Ansau North Borneo Trail: Culture, Adventure and Nature', the July 4-8 initiative also supported the ongoing Cuti-Cuti Malaysia campaign to explore hidden gems, natural treasures and the unique cultural heritage of the destinations. TM Sabah Director Haryanty Abu Bakar said the programme also incorporated rural tourism development initiatives focusing on community involvement and nature conservation, driven by local industry players. This aligns with Tourism Malaysia's efforts to broaden the promotion of Sabah's tourism offerings, especially in lesser-known areas, she added. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article.

Grab glitch shows fares as high as RM1,000

Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 Text Size: A screenshot of the woman's upfront fare KOTA KINABALU: Grab users in Singapore and Malaysia were hit by shock fares on Wednesday after a system glitch briefly displayed ride prices in the hundreds or even thousands of ringgits. The issue saw short city trips priced at RM1,000 before fares returned to normal around 12.20pm local time. Advertisement Grab said in a statement the abnormal rates were caused by a temporary display error. 'The issue has been resolved, and the app is now functioning as usual. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused,' the company said. A saleswoman commuting from Putatan to Lintas was shocked when her fare showed RM1,011, about a thousand ringgit more than usual. She told Daily Express that she suspected a glitch, which was later confirmed by her colleague's similar experience. 'We had no choice but to wait for the price to return to normal, or risk paying the huge sum,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Grab fares topping US$1,000 stun Singapore ride-hailing users

Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 By: Bloomberg Text Size: Grab Holdings Ltd's ride-hailing app briefly showed fares in the hundreds or thousands of dollars early this afternoon. SINGAPORE: Singapore ride-hailing users got a rude shock today after prices on the most popular app jumped about a hundred times from the usual rates, with short trips within the city costing US$1,000 or more. Grab Holdings Ltd's ride-hailing app showed fares in the hundreds or thousands of dollars briefly early afternoon in its home base of Singapore, with users in Malaysia also reporting similar increases. Advertisement A Grab spokesman attributed the elevated rates to a temporary display glitch. Fares went back to normal as of about 12.20pm Singapore time. Grab, which is backed by Uber Technologies Inc, is the leading ride provider in its home market and countries including Malaysia and Thailand. Uber left the region in 2018 in exchange for a stake in Grab, which is now locked in fierce competition against Indonesia's GoTo Group and other smaller rivals. 'We encountered a temporary system issue that led to abnormally high prices being wrongly displayed in our app,' Grab said in a statement. 'The issue has been resolved, and the app is now functioning as usual. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused,' it said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MP reiterates call for direct Sandakan international flights

Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Suhaimi said he had raised this matter during the winding-up session of the State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister at the First Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 16th Sabah State Assembly. SANDAKAN: Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir has called for the immediate introduction of direct international flights to Sandakan to boost the tourism industry and the local economy in Sabah's east coast. He said Sandakan is already well-known as an eco-tourism destination with major attractions such as the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Gomantong Caves, marine life-rich islands and tropical rainforests recognised as global treasures. Advertisement 'I was very encouraged by the remarks of the Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, who said that Sandakan's tourism products are entirely nature-based. 'Next year we will celebrate Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Unfortunately, Sandakan has not been prioritised from the beginning of this year as a tourism hub,' he said. Suhaimi said he had raised this matter during the winding-up session of the State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister at the First Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 16th Sabah State Assembly. The Sabah Umno Information Chief also emphasised that Sandakan's main weakness lies in its limited flight connectivity, noting that flights from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan remain too few. 'Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan are only twice daily, even though nearly half the passengers on board are tourists. 'More worrying is that Sandakan still does not have direct international flights, making it difficult for foreign tourists to come here. 'In 2018, Sandakan was already allocated for direct international flights, but until today this has not been realised. I want to know what plans the State Government and Ministry have to ensure this truly becomes a reality,' he said. Suhaimi said introducing direct international flights to Sandakan was crucial as it would not only open wider access to international tourism markets but also boost economic opportunities for the people on Sabah's east coast. 'Sandakan must be made the main gateway for tourists entering the east coast of Sabah. 'I urge the State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, together with the Transport of Malaysia Ministry, to act immediately to ensure direct international flights to Sandakan are established in the near future,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
