Why Chelsea refuse to sell their 5th choice defender after club decision

Yahoo3 days ago
Chelsea's ruthless transfer strategy has gone to another gear this summer, with the Blues now past the stage of selling off the players from the previous regime and into the stage of selling players bought within the last two years if the chance for profit is there.
Noni Madueke and Djordje Petrovic are gone, Renato Veiga and Joao Felix are likely to be next as the summer of sales rolls on.

It's an upsetting of the usual order of things in football – you wouldn't have seen a first team regular like Madueke sold to a league rival in the days of Jose Mourinho. But that's how it is now.
Anyone is for sale at the right price. But that doesn't mean there won't be decisions taken for the sake of the group as a whole.
Chelsea consider defender 'untouchable' for off the field reasons
Curiously, given we're happy to sell first choice players, there's a fifth choice player who is apparently considered 'untouchable.' An exclusive from the Sun over the weekend claimed that Tosin Adarabioyo was not for sale, despite interest from Crystal Palace and West Ham.
Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill form Enzo Maresca's favoured partnership and Trevoh Chalobah seems to be established as third choice now. With the impending arrival of Jorrel Hato, Tosin could soon find himself 5th choice centre-back – but he won't be going anywhere.
That's because of his dressing room benefits – as one of the senior player who is seen to knit things together behind the scenes despite the endless personnel turnover, plus his close relationship with the team's star player Cole Palmer.
That's the best kind of job security of all.

€40m vice-captain offered to Liverpool

Liverpool have been presented a unique opportunity to strengthen a problem area as a result of Barcelona's financial concerns. The Reds are about to head into the season with only TWO fully-fit centre-backs and there are question marks over the future of one of them. LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Virgil van Dijk has been secured to a contract until 2027 but his partner Ibrahima Konate is only under contract until 2026. With no sign of a breakthrough, it means the club could be left woefully short of viable central defensive options in less than 12 months. Factor in the injury to Joe Gomez - third-choice at the outset of preseason - and you can see how centre-back could potentially become an issue. Barcelona turn to Liverpool Recently it's been suggested that Barca could be forced into selling Ronald Araujo in order to make space in the budget. Araujo, 26, is under contract until 2021 but could be offloaded for a bargain €40m fee this summer. Liverpool have been previously linked with the Uruguayan stopper - with the player being described as a favourite of Arne Slot. And with uncertainty over Konate as well as Gomez's injury - this could be a unique opportunity to strike. And Defensa Central reckons the Reds could be preferred bidders - giving the Premier League champions a big advantage over other suitors. Barca don't want to sell Araujo to Real Madrid Those interested clubs are reported to now include Real Madrid and Barca fear ANOTHER Luis Figo-style transfer happening. That's why club president Joan Laporta would rather sell Araujo to one of his Premier League suitors - namely Liverpool. 'The Barça president could sell his second captain, clearly forced by the debts that are drowning Barcelona,' the report reads. 'Laporta doesn't want another Figo case and is negotiating with Liverpool to keep him from joining Real Madrid. 'This explains why Joan Laporta wants the player to go to another club, and in the Premier League there are several who are willing to put more than 40 million euros for the Uruguayan, among them Liverpool.' Konate to Real, Araujo to Liverpool? Of course Real are among the contenders to sign Konate either on a free transfer or else for a fee this summer. And so we could have a domino effect involving the France international and Araujo looming into view. If Liverpool sell Konate to Real Madrid this summer - for €50m or so - it means Los Blancos do not have to go chasing Araujo. That in turn would reduce the risk of embarrassing Laporta - who would otherwise have to sell one of his vice-captains to Real Madrid. Instead Liverpool - with a vacancy at centre-back and money to spend - could move for Araujo. Let's see how this one plays out over the next few weeks.

Chelsea reach Jorrel Hato agreement with Ajax with defender to join on seven-year deal

An agreement between Chelsea and Ajax over Jorrel Hato has been reached subject to supervisory board approval set to join on a deal through to 2032. The Netherlands international, 19, will travel for a medical after the approval has been given. The Athletic reported on Monday that Chelsea were closing on a move for Hato with personal terms already in place. Advertisement Hato has made 111 first-team appearances for Ajax after coming through the Dutch club's youth setup after beginning his career at Sparta Rotterdam. He has captained the side and operated at both left-back and in the centre of defence and is set to join Marc Cucurella, Malo Gusto, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana as options for Enzo Maresca in those positions at Stamford Bridge. Hato has been capped six times at international level with the Netherlands having previously being a regular at youth level. Chelsea have enjoyed another busy summer with Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens all arriving alongside Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez, who had all previously agreed to move to west London. Goalkeepers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Djordje Petrovic have departed as has winger Noni Madueke and Joao Felix, who has made a permanent exit to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. Analysis by Andy Jones and Mark Carey Hato is one of the hottest defensive prospects in Europe, having played regularly for Ajax for the last two seasons. Graduating from the Ajax academy, he is technically gifted and confident in possession. He is used to being in a ball-dominant side and he is not afraid to be adventurous with the ball at his feet both through dribbling or using his passing range. For context, only PSV Eindhoven's Richy Ledezma posted a better pass completion rate than Hato's 89 per cent among Eredivisie full-backs last season. At such a young age, he is still growing into his body and that will only benefit him defensively, an area he is good in but has room to improve — he is a solid one-on-one defender, reads the game well but does not dominate aerially. Caleb Williams feeling "pretty solid" in learning Bears' new offense under Ben Johnson

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams said Wednesday he's feeling "pretty solid" with where he's at learning the new offense under head coach Ben Johnson, pointing to "protecting the football the past couple practices." After their first two padded practices of training camp on Monday and Tuesday – including the team's first live tackling in camp in at least a couple years, according to nickel back Kyler Gordon – the Bears held a shorter, unpadded practice on Wednesday. Williams had a crisp start to team drills and said he and his offensive teammates are trying to get to the point where they're not thinking so much pre-snap, as they work to learn Johnson's offense and its apparently extensive terminology. "There's so many words that we have in our playbook, and you know you put so many words together that sometimes they kind of sound the same. So, just, when you hear a play, you start to hear the play, it's like, 'Uhh, okay, I know what the play is.' And so, I know exactly what we have. So it comes down to just a little bit more studying. It comes down to a little bit more practicing, a lot more reps, and things like that over time." Just seven practices into training camp, Williams said he feels like he's in a good place with the offense and how he's performing on the field. "Right now, I'm doing well with the process, whether that's before the snap, whether it's after the snap, whether it's footwork, all these different things. Protecting the football the past couple practices has been key and important. It's important in any season and any moment," he said. On Tuesday, Johnson praised Williams for the work he's putting in behind the scenes, and said he's already seen growth in his understanding of the offense. "His process is really clean right now. I'm talking about how he's preparing. I'm really pleased with it. He's doing the work behind the scenes that no one else is seeing and we're starting to see the dividends being paid from it," Johnson said. The Bears were down a couple offensive linemen during practice on Wednesday. Left tackle Braxton Jones had a scheduled rest day. Left guard Jonah Jackson is dealing with a leg injury and is day-to-day.
