A Sleek New Hotel Bar Just Opened From a Cocktail Pro

A defunct Union Square bar just got a new lease on life. The former Benjamin Cooper on Geary Street is now the Valley Club. The new business opened Thursday, June 12 as 'a sexy sexy lounge,' or at least according to local writer Alcademics who wrote about the opening. This is the first solo project from Mitch Lagneaux, who worked at Horsefeather and Brass Tacks amongst other high-end San Francisco bars. The bar is inside the Hotel G and upstairs from Adriano Paganini's coastal Italian restaurant Corzetti. This new bar is decked with lots of mirrors and plush interior. Drinks are similarly done-up: there's a chocolate and raspberry Negroni, the Midas Touch oh bourbon, Galliano, vanilla, orange, lemon, and 'pure gold,' per the menu. There are 'side quests,' too, batched shots that run two for $20 or four for $35. In much more dire news, Le Marais Bakery on 18th Street was robbed on Friday, June 13. The business owners posted on Facebook letting their loyal fanbase know the burglars put 'an explosive on the window.' This setback comes after owners Patrick and Joanna Ascaso's sister business were told by Ferry Building managers their sister business Grande Creperie will not receive a lease renewal after all. On Castro Street proper, Jamieson Leadbetter and his family from Portland, Maine, are rolling out service in their first San Francisco location. Leadbetter's Bake Shop hosted a preview weekend in early June, selling apricot ginger English muffins and creme fraiche mushroom breakfast sandwiches. Tablehopper reports the initial opening hours continue next weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Craftsman Coffee at 1750 Francisco Boulevard will host local baker and neuroscience PhD Parwana Ashari on Sunday, June 22 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Ashari starred on the Great American Baking Show season three. She sets up shop where Mark Lieuw first popped up with his outfit Stay Sweet SF in 2024.

Kering Stock Surges on the Prospect of a New Company CEO

PARIS — Shares in Kering surged 10.2 percent in midday trading Monday on expectations that Renault chief executive officer Luca de Meo will soon take up the management helm of the troubled luxury group. Equity analysts also gave a thumbs up to the prospect. More from WWD Could Kering's New CEO Come From the Auto Sector? Magic vs. Logic: Analysts Get Creative and Start to Weigh In on Designer Appointments EXCLUSIVE: Akris Has a New CEO of the Americas 'Kering needs change, as performance has continued to deteriorate,' Bernstein's Luca Solca said in a research note, highlighting that the company's share price has fallen 28 percent in 2025 year-to-date and 78 percent from its peak in mid-2021, 'largely driven by shrinking sales at its main brand, Gucci, which has been undergoing a multiyear metamorphosis.' Citi's Thomas Chauvet trumpeted de Meo's credentials. 'De Meo is perceived to have largely contributed to Renault's turnaround through product newness, technological innovation, [electric vehicle] transition shift, brand elevation and a return to growth and profit,' Chauvet wrote, while cautioning that 'execution of luxury brand turnarounds has become more complex, lengthy, costly and far less public-market-friendly in the past few years.' He explained that this reflects 'consumer preference for top brands rather than those in transition and significant P&L disruption from greater investment commitment and lower cost flexibility.' 'There is still a considerable amount of work ahead at Gucci and Saint Laurent [80 percent of group EBIT combined, pre-central costs] to rejuvenate both brands and generate a steady stream of revenue and cash flow for the group,' Chauvet wrote. Solca argued that brand management and marketing are de Meo's forte, 'which dovetails with what the luxury industry does — for which he seems passionate.' 'We were well aware of his affinity for the luxury space, in particular his passion for complicated Swiss watches that we discussed with him at the end of a Renault event in March 2022,' Solca noted. 'It is not hard to imagine how intriguing he found the Kering opportunity.' Kering has yet to comment on a report late Sunday in French daily Le Figaro that de Meo will succeed François-Henri Pinault, who has helmed the family-controlled group since 2005. Renault Group had announced earlier Sunday that de Meo decided to 'step down and pursue new challenges outside the automotive sector.' His departure will be effective July 15. The Italian executive spent five years leading Renault and boasts 30 years in the industry at brands including Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Toyota, Volkswagen and Seat. Kering has recruited industry outsiders in the past to run its fashion business. What was then Gucci Group famously recruited Robert Polet from Unilever's ice cream and frozen foods division as its president and CEO from 2004 to 2011. Pinault told shareholders at the company's annual meeting last April that he was unhappy with Kering's results and share price performance. 'I am totally committed to making sure the stock price recovers by restoring financial performance, not in the very short term, but in a sustainable manner in order to generate a stock price that is less volatile and more solid in the months and years to come,' he said. Kering is banking on its star Balenciaga designer Demna to speed the turnaround at Gucci, where he starts as creative director next month, with his first designs to be unveiled during Milan Fashion Week in September. Al Nassr set transfer fee for Arsenal and Aston Villa to sign Aymeric Laporte

Arsenal and Aston Villa have expressed interest in signing former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte from Al Nassr, according to reports in Spain. Laporte was a mainstay in Pep Guardiola's Man City team for half a decade, making 180 appearances for the Etihad club and lifting five Premier League trophies. The Spain international completed a £23.6m move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr two years ago in a summer which saw several high-profile players move to the country. Laporte was linked with a return to Europe last summer and similar speculation looks set to continue during this summer's transfer window. Spanish outlet AS say Laporte's former club Athletic Bilbao are showing serious interest in the 31-year-old, who has one year left on his lucrative contract with Al Nassr. It was at Bilbao that Laporte established himself as a top defender and caught the eye of Man City, who brought him to the Premier League in 2018 for £57m. It is claimed Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde has asked the club to seal a return for Laporte but that the finances involved are beyond the La Liga club. Laporte would have to agree to take a significant pay-cut to return to Europe, while Al Nassr will insist on recouping most of the cash they spent on the defender 24 months ago, putting his price tag at around £20m. While the numbers involved make a move to Bilbao unlikely, the Spanish side will try to play on Laporte's ties to the club to welcome him back this summer. AS say Athletic Bilbao, who finished fourth in La Liga last season and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, are not the only European club interested in Laporte. Premier League rivals Arsenal and Aston Villa have both registered interest along with French outfit Marseille and Italian giants Inter Milan and Napoli. Premier League – 5EFL Cup – 3FA Cup – 2Champions League – 1Super Cup – 1 PFA Team of the Year – 1 Arsenal's focus at the start of the summer transfer window has been on a striker – talks have been held with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko – and a midfielder – Martin Zubimendi is closing in on a £55m move. But talk of multiple defenders leaving, including Kieran Tierney, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior, means Mikel Arteta may also look for defensive reinforcements. Arsenal have also been contacted over a deal for Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori but reportedly rejected the transfer approach. Aston Villa, meanwhile, have also welcomed one new defender to Villa Park this summer, young Turkey star Yasin Ozcan joining Unai Emery's squad. Speaking during his first season in the Saudi Pro League, Laporte suggested several players who had made the switch were unhappy. 'They haven't made it easy for us,' Laporte told AS. 'In fact, there are many players that are dissatisfied. 'They do look after us but not enough for my liking. That is to say, in Europe they pay you a good salary, but they take better care of you. More Trending 'I speak from my own experience and I don't know what the experience of others is like. 'For my part, what I have seen is that they try to bring you in, but then there is the day-to-day life and that is different.' Al Nassr, who also boast all-time great Cristiano Ronaldo, endured a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, failing to win any silverware and finishing third in the Saudi Pro League. As well as picking up a number of domestic trophies, Laporte also helped Spain win Euro 2024 last summer, starting the final as Luis de la Fuente's side beat England.
