A Sleek New Hotel Bar Just Opened From a Cocktail Pro

A defunct Union Square bar just got a new lease on life. The former Benjamin Cooper on Geary Street is now the Valley Club. The new business opened Thursday, June 12 as 'a sexy sexy lounge,' or at least according to local writer Alcademics who wrote about the opening. This is the first solo project from Mitch Lagneaux, who worked at Horsefeather and Brass Tacks amongst other high-end San Francisco bars.
The bar is inside the Hotel G and upstairs from Adriano Paganini's coastal Italian restaurant Corzetti. This new bar is decked with lots of mirrors and plush interior. Drinks are similarly done-up: there's a chocolate and raspberry Negroni, the Midas Touch oh bourbon, Galliano, vanilla, orange, lemon, and 'pure gold,' per the menu. There are 'side quests,' too, batched shots that run two for $20 or four for $35.
In much more dire news, Le Marais Bakery on 18th Street was robbed on Friday, June 13. The business owners posted on Facebook letting their loyal fanbase know the burglars put 'an explosive on the window.' This setback comes after owners Patrick and Joanna Ascaso's sister business were told by Ferry Building managers their sister business Grande Creperie will not receive a lease renewal after all.
On Castro Street proper, Jamieson Leadbetter and his family from Portland, Maine, are rolling out service in their first San Francisco location. Leadbetter's Bake Shop hosted a preview weekend in early June, selling apricot ginger English muffins and creme fraiche mushroom breakfast sandwiches. Tablehopper reports the initial opening hours continue next weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Craftsman Coffee at 1750 Francisco Boulevard will host local baker and neuroscience PhD Parwana Ashari on Sunday, June 22 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Ashari starred on the Great American Baking Show season three. She sets up shop where Mark Lieuw first popped up with his outfit Stay Sweet SF in 2024.

‘Grand penthouse' for sale in Boston has left folks utterly speechless. See why

Step inside a castle … that's inside a very large building and prepare to be amazed. Also, prepare for a lot of echoing. While it's not technically a castle, it has the size and structure of one, but in the form of probably the most unique penthouse outside of New York City or Los Angeles. And it's listed for $49.5 million in Boston, Massachusetts. Yes, you read that right. 'Experience a new echelon of luxury living at The Grand Penthouse, the crown jewel of the St. Regis Residences,' the listing on Douglas Elliman says. 'Encompassing over 10,000 sq ft across 2 dramatic levels, this one-of-a-kind home sits atop Boston's iconic Seaport, offering panoramic views of Boston Harbor and the city skyline through soaring floor-to-ceiling windows.' The wow-factor is off the charts just combing through the photos. It has dramatic views and marble flooring (probably don't want to take a tumble down those stairs anytime soon), classic ivory overtones, a dining room that makes you feel you're inside of a kaleidoscope, and, yes, a massive bar to watch Red Sox games even though you're still crying over losing Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. 'Designed with extraordinary attention to detail, the residence features a double-height great room, a sculptural curved floating staircase with glass railings, and a grand foyer with an Italian marble radial inlay floor. Every element is curated for refined living and entertaining at scale,' the listing describes. Other features inside the six-bedroom, 10-bathroom home, per the listing, include: Infinity pool with clear bottomRetractable glass roofElevatorFireplaceSauna It also has a Home Owner's Association monthly fee of $22,000. The place is so elegant that it was featured on the popular Facebook page, Zillow Gone Wild, a real estate page that highlights interesting listings around the market. People were flabbergasted. 'I'll go in 50/50 on the HOA with someone,' someone joked. 'Is that Tony Starks house?' one person asked. The listing is held by The Sarkis Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Bing Crosby's French-inspired California mansion sells for $25M — far below the original asking price

The late American entertainer Bing Crosby's sprawling French Chateau-style estate sold last week for $25 million — $15 million less than its asking price. Crosby, best known for his crooning holiday hit 'White Christmas,' bought the property in Hillsborough, California in the early 1960s, as a gift for his wife Kathryn. The sprawling 5.38-acre property south of San Francisco offered the star and his family of five a reprieve from Hollywood. The estate remained in the family for six decades, but it only stayed on the market for less than four months. Despite the discounted sale, first reported by Mansion Global, the transaction ranks among the Silicon Valley enclave's priciest sales ever. 12 The property listed in February for $40 million. Ornate fireplaces and intricate woodwork line the interiors, which include 11 bedrooms, an impressive library and a smoking room with a built-in bar. The estate also offers a separate wing for staff housing. The Crosby family undertook extensive renovations on the house, according to Golden Gate Sotheby's International Realty. Kathryn commissioned hand-painted dining room walls by a prominent San Francisco artist, and the couple installed antiques from the collection of news baron and 'Citizen Kane' inspiration William Randolph Hearst. Those additionaly include a hand-carved wooden staircase banister and Georgian paneling from a 17th-century English manor home. Hearst was a close friend of Crosby's, the Wall Street Journal reported, and an avid collector of European antiques. 12 A foyer. Crosby lived in the luxurious home until his in death in 1977. His heirs retained the property until the death of his second wife Kathryn in 2024, according to the Journal, after which time Crosby's children decided it was time to sell. 12 The $25 million sale ranks the home among the most expensive ever sold in Hillsborough. Jason Wells/ Golden Gate Creative Compass agents Alex and Pierre Buljan told Mansion Global that the transaction, which closed on Thursday, places the home in the top five priciest home sale's in the history of Hillsborough. This puts the Crosby estate in league with Elon Musk's 47-acre former estate that sold for $30 million in 2021 and again for $35 million in 2022. While the buyer is not yet identifiable in public records, Buljan told the outlet they are a Hillsborough local that plans to maintain the character and history of the home.

Dodger Stadium singer confirms she performed national anthem in Spanish to protest ICE, in defiance of team

An interesting national anthem was performed at Dodger Stadium on Saturday — and not because the team wanted it. Rather than sing the traditional "The Star-Spangled Banner," Vanessa Hernández, who performs under the name Nezza, sang 'El Pendón Estrellado,' the official Spanish version of the anthem commissioned by the U.S. government under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945. Advertisement She apparently did so in defiance of the Dodgers' instructions, as she posted a TikTok following the performance showing an unidentified employee explicitly telling her the song should be in English. "We are going to do the song in English today, so I don't know if that wasn't translated — er, communicated," the employee said. Nezza's caption: "Watch the Dodgers tell me I can't sing the Spanish Star Spangled Banner that Roosevelt literally commissioned in 1945 — so I did it anyway." Wearing a shirt with the flag and colors of her native Dominican Republic, an emotional Nezza paused for tears before delivering the song's final line. In a different video, Nezza confirmed that she performed the song as a protest on the part of the Latino community as the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency continues to carry out raids in Los Angeles: "I didn't think I would be met with any sort of 'No,' especially because we're in L.A. with everything happening. I've sang the national anthem many times in my life, but today I could not. I'm sorry ... I just could not believe, when she walked in and told me 'No,' but I just felt like I needed to do it, para mi gente [for my people]. "My parents are immigrants. They've been citizens my whole life at this point, they got documented really early, but I just can't imagine them being ripped away from me, even at this age, let alone a little kid. Like, what are we doing?" Despite Nezza saying "Safe to say I'm never allowed in that stadium ever again," The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya reports that she was not punished or ejected from Dodger Stadium and is not expected to be banned from the stadium. The team reportedly declined comment on her videos. Advertisement The Dodgers won Saturday's game 11-5. ICE has been raiding locations throughout Los Angeles since June 6, triggering protests across the city and major political disputes between local politicians and President Donald Trump's administration, most notably the arrest of Sen. Alex Padilla while confronting Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Both California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass have urged ICE to leave, but Trump has gone as far as mobilizing the California National Guard and deploying hundreds of Marines in the city. Advertisement A federal judge ruled Friday that Trump's federalization of the National Guard was illegal, but the order to return control to Newsom has been paused pending an appeal this week. Trump himself has somewhat backtracked amid the chaos, directing officers to halt arresting employees at farms, hotels and restaurants. Arrests have continued at other locations. The Dodgers and many of the other major teams in the Los Angeles area have largely remained silent about the current events, though exceptions include MLS's LAFC and the NWSL's Angel City. LAFC released a statement expressing solidarity with the community amid "fear and uncertainty," while Angel City went a step further with shirts reading "Immigrant City Football Club." Individual members of the Dodgers organization have spoken out on Instagram as well. Advertisement Veteran utility man Kiké Hernández said he is "saddened and infuriated by what's happening in our country and our city," and that he "cannot stand to see our community being violated, profiled, abused and ripped apart." Former Dodgers first baseman Adrián González, who now works for the team as a broadcaster, called the raids "unconstitutional" and "illegal," urging the government to stop separating families. Meanwhile, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who has spoken on social justice issues in the past, pleaded ignorance about the issues on Friday, per The Athletic: 'Honestly, I don't know enough, to be quite honest with you. I know that when you're having to bring people in and deport people, all the unrest, it's certainly unsettling for everyone. But I haven't dug enough and can't speak intelligently on it.' Perhaps Hernández can give him some details.
