Brits music icon says she'd love to do Strictly but gets 'rejected every year by producers'
The singer, who rose to fame in the early 80s on the Eurovision Song Contest, revealed that BBC bosses have rejected her proposal to star on the show multiple times.
UK Eurovision icon Cheryl Baker has revealed that she would love to participate in Strictly Come Dancing but she gets turned down by the producers every year. The 71-year-old singer, who was born Rita Maria Stroud, won the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with the UK's pop group entry, Bucks Fizz, which she was a member of.
However, it seems that the pop group's memorable win still isn't enough to get Cheryl Baker onto that Strictly Come Dancing ballroom floor. Cheryl still performs in the band alongside OG member Jay Aston and newcomers Nikk Mager and Matthew Pateman, but the group are now known as The Fizz instead.
Speaking exclusively to Slingo, the singer revealed she's been repeatedly turned down for the BBC One reality series, despite regularly throwing her name into the ring. She also revealed that she had put herself forward for this year's Celebrity Traitors but was left 'gutted' to discover she was too late and the star studded cast had already been selected.
While Cheryl has made her eagerness to dip her toes into reality TV pretty clear, also saying she'd 'love' a go on I'm A Celebrity, she has ruled out a return to Eurovision, despite insisting the group are now 'vocally stronger'.
Formerly known as Bucks Fizz, the band were victorious in the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest Final with their song Making Your Mind Up.
Their big win over 44 years ago comes as the second last time the UK have won the annual singing contest since.
Britain have not been successful in Eurovision in the contest since 1997, when Katrina & The Waves came out on top with their song Love Shine A Light.
During a conversation with Slingo, Cheryl was asked about her reality TV ambitions.
She said: 'I'd love to do Strictly. I always put myself up for it every year, and they always say no, which is a great shame. I love dancing - I'm not a trained dancer, but I love dancing.
"I would love to go do I'm A Celebrity - I would love that. I would also love to do Traitors. When I knew there was going to be a celebrity one, I contacted my agent and said, 'Get me on it!'
"When she told me that they'd already cast it, I was gutted. I can't wait to see it, but I'd do any of them."
Cheryl continued: "That's the way TV has gone. If you don't want to be on any of those shows, it really limits you to what you can do, because that's what's on TV now.
"I miss Top of the Pops - I wish they'd bring it back. All the young artists now, they've got a televisual platform to show how good they are.'
However, when questioned on a Eurovision return, she was not so keen.
When asked if she'd ever go back on the contest, she said: " I mean, we've got our two new guys, they're great singers and if the cameras are far enough away… I'd hate for them to do camera close ups of Jay and I, and go, they're getting on a bit!
"I feel vocally we're stronger now than we have been for years, because there's four of us and the boys are tremendous but I don't think we could do Eurovision again.
'We've carried on and had lots of gigs, working with Mike and Jay and now with Matthew [Pateman] and Nikk [Majer] as four. There are certain gigs that haven't employed us because we're not officially Bucks Fizz but we're really good!"
Cheryl, 71, added: "We haven't done a Let's Rock for years, we used to do it as The Original Bucks Fizz, but because we're called The Fizz now, I'm guessing that's probably the reason we don't get to do it.
"We do lots of other festivals and 80s weekends. It's great fun, I love it. They all chant and at the end we get them to sing 'A Land Of Make Believe' and they all sing it on their own, all the musicians cut out. I love it, what's not to love? It's such a boost to your ego!'

‘An audible gasp': Doctor Who fans shocked by Billie Piper return
Nearly two decades since she first appeared on Doctor Who, Billie Piper made a spectacular return to the show on Saturday night, in the latest season's finale, The Reality War. After just two series, Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor regenerated into a grinning Piper, who greeted viewers with a 'oh Hello!' in the episode's final scene. The 42-year-old is best known to Doctor Who fans for playing the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler for two seasons, alongside Christopher Eccleston, when the show was reintroduced to TV screens in 2005 after a 16-year break. Her return came as a genuine shock to fans, many of whom were impressed that the BBC had managed to avoid leaks. But it has also left them with questions – will Billie Piper play the Doctor in the show's next series? And will there be a next series at all? In February the BBC denied reports the show faced the axe – but said any decision wouldn't be made until the latest series had been broadcast. Its statement pointed out half of the 26 episodes agreed with Disney+ still had not aired. Twenty-one out of those 26 have now aired, leaving a five-episode spinoff starring Russell Tovey, the trailer for which aired after Saturday's finale. TV critic and Doctor Who fan Scott Bryan, 35, said the reintroduction of Piper to the show came at a pivotal time for Doctor Who, amid speculation about its future. 'I think it felt a bit like, towards the end of the episode, a pitch to Disney to say: 'Hi, please renew us, we've got Billie Piper'.' 'Of course we've not had any confirmation about whether the Disney deal will be renewed, but also when or if these episodes will be aired. Nothing has been confirmed regarding filming. It's a moment in TV that has raised more questions than answers, but that's how Doctor Who works.' Concerns have been raised about falling viewing figures, which have struggled to rally since Russell T Davies' return in 2023. Two episodes during this series, which aired in May, got less than 3 million viewers – the lowest since the modern era began airing in 2005. The coordinator of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, Tony Jordan, 66, from Staffordshire, said he was concerned about the show's future. 'Obviously if it had been a stellar success then they would have recommissioned it already,' he said. 'It is a concern that it is not going straight back into production but, to be fair, there have been times since it came back in 2005 where you've had a year-long break.' Whether Piper will play her old character Rose, the Doctor or another character is also unclear. The credits, which showed Gatwa and Jodie Whittaker as 'the Doctor' did not do the same for Piper. Eccleston, her former Doctor, told an event in the US in 2021 he backed the idea of his former assistant taking on the role. He said: 'I was saying to somebody today in the green room that Russell T Davies is coming back, right, and who's going to be his Doctor? I think it should be Billie Piper actually. Catherine Tate's great but, I think there's your Doctor.' Dan McLaughlin, 30, who was watching the finale with fellow fans at a cinema in Manchester when Piper appeared said: 'There was an audible gasp when she came on, definitely. There was maybe about two or three cheers, and someone behind me swore.' Bryan said: 'It was a real surprise. I think Billie Piper is fantastic, she was one of the reasons why the 2005 series landed so well and led to 20 years of a hugely successful show and a reboot. But a surprise nonetheless.' He added: 'I'm intrigued by what they decide to do with her, and the fact that there's mysteries around the fact that we don't know whether she's playing the Doctor, it's a bit open ended.' McLaughlin said he felt 'deflated' by Piper's appearance as it indicated a lack of new ideas behind the show. He said: 'Billie Piper's amazing and Rose was a wonderful character, but you want something new now, you want to be excited. I loved [David] Tennant in the 60th anniversary special, but bringing back characters loses its novelty if you just keep on bringing the old ones back all the time. It's lacking in original ideas.'

Race Across The World star Sam Gardiner dies after crash
Sam Gardiner competed in the global travel competition's second series with his mother, who said she was devastated by his death. The 24-year-old was driving a white Volkswagen Golf R estate when it came off the road and rolled before landing on its side. The Race Across the World team has also paid tribute. The series saw the pair enjoy adventures across Mexico and Argentina. The accident happened on the A34 in Gatley, near Cheadle, on Monday night and he died on Thursday from his injuries, his family said. The landscape gardener had been working on an isolated estate on the west coast of Scotland and was home in Manchester for a family gathering. 'Sam left us far too soon, and whilst words will never fully capture the light, joy and energy he brought into our lives, we hold on to the memories that made him so special. 'Sam was adored by his family. As a son, brother and nephew, he was loyal, funny and fiercely protective. 'He did Race Across The World in 2019, which opened his eyes to the wonder of adventure and travel. 'He was willing to go wherever the trail might lead and he touched everyone he met on the road. He found great happiness working as a landscape gardener on the west coast of Scotland.' He added: 'Sam brought warmth, laughter and a smattering of chaos wherever he went. He leaves behind a huge hole in our hearts. 'We will miss him endlessly, but we'll also remember him with smiles, tall tales and a depth of love that will never fade.' A spokesperson for Race Across The World also paid tribute, saying: 'We are all deeply saddened to hear the tragic news about Sam. 'Everyone who worked with him and indeed everyone who watched Sam could see just how precious and transformative the trip was for both him and his mum, Jo. 'Sam embraced the seven-week trip with an energy, love and a determination that saw the pair enjoy adventures across Mexico to Argentina, making audiences fall in love with them and their special bond as a result. 'Since filming, both Sam and Jo have been an integral part of the Race Across The World cast family and on behalf of us all from the BBC, production and the rest of the cast, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to his parents, Andrew and Jo; his brothers, William and Charlie; his step mum Justine; his family and friends.'
