Barrels of human waste and dead animals dumped by eco lodge owners

Yahoo11-04-2025

Two 'soul-driven entrepreneurs' fled their acclaimed Swedish eco-resort for a new life, reportedly leaving behind huge tax debts, dead animals and 158 barrels of human waste.
Danish chefs Flemming Hansen and Mette Helbæk, who used to run a rooftop restaurant in Copenhagen, set up Stedsans, an internationally celebrated forest retreat in Halland, southern Sweden, after feeling the 'call of the wild'.
They vanished from Sweden several months ago and were tracked down to Guatemala where they have set up a hotel business.
'When you read this we have probably been declared bankrupt by the Swedish tax authorities,' they said on their website. 'All we ever wanted was to be a part of creating a more beautiful planet.'
Social media influencers had gushed over Stedsans' 16 wooden cottages in the Swedish wilderness.
When Mr Hansen and Ms Helbæk vanished, they reportedly abandoned multiple animals and 158 barrels of human excrement for compost toilets.
Staff said some of the animals, which included ducks, had later died.
Wastewater had also been allowed to run into the forest, according to an investigation by the Dagens Nyheter and Politiken newspapers.
On Thursday, the couple claimed they had acted lawfully over the barrels of waste.
'For people in rural Sweden it's a very normal thing,' they said on social media. 'It's also a very important part of the permaculture principles that you deal with your own s---.'
Local authorities described their actions as an 'environmental crime'.
They said proper procedures for compost toilets, including reporting the intention to use them and having barrels collected by the local authority, had not been followed.
The newspaper investigation found the couple owed millions of kroner to the Danish tax authorities before they moved to Sweden in 2016 and built up a reported £470,000 debt to the Swedish taxman. Stedsans was declared bankrupt in March.
'We came very far with Stedsans, but we also had to realise on the way that being soul-driven entrepreneurs on a mission in a country where taxes are some of the highest in the world and bureaucracy is relentless, it is an impossible task,' the couple stated on their website.
They accused the journalists behind the investigation of being responsible for 'our life's biggest (literal!) sh-tstorm'.
'The article claims that we have been damaging the local environment with our procedures at our permaculture resort and that we have left animals to die. All these claims and several others are false.'

BP Takeover Appears Unlikely Due to Size and Complexity

BP plc's BP potential takeover appears highly unlikely at present, according to senior bankers at Moelis & Co., who cite the British oil major's vast size and operational complexity as major barriers to acquisition, per a Bloomberg report. Speaking to Bloomberg, Stephen Trauber, Moelis Chairman and Global Head of Energy and Clean Technology, indicated that there is no obvious buyer for BP at present, especially not from the United States. He added that even on a global scale, few potential acquirers see BP's assets as essential. Shell Plc SHEL is seen as the most compatible acquirer in terms of asset synergies and regulatory feasibility, according to Trauber. However, Shell's earlier shift toward traditional oil and gas, and its current stronger market positioning make a deal less attractive from its side. That said, Trauber acknowledged that there is a good chance of a tie-up in the future, particularly if BP's valuation remains subdued and Shell continues to strengthen its balance sheet. In such a scenario, strategic alternatives may need to be reassessed. BP's $20 billion divestment plan is encountering headwinds, with its lubricants unit, Castrol, standing out as a particularly difficult asset to offload. According to Moelis, the business has a narrow pool of potential buyers, making a successful sale uncertain, even under competitive conditions. The company may also consider selling its high-quality oil assets in the United States that may attract strong interest. However, such a move could trigger broader concerns about BP's future strategy, as highlighted by Moelis Managing Director Muhammad Laghari. For now, the consensus among energy dealmakers is that a BP takeover remains a distant prospect. While strategic realignments and market dynamics could change the picture in the future, BP's scale, asset mix and valuation challenges make any near-term acquisition highly improbable. BP currently carries a Zack Rank #5 (Strong Sell). Investors interested in the energy sector may look at a couple of better-ranked stocks like Subsea 7 S.A. SUBCY and Energy Transfer LP ET. Subsea 7 presently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), while Energy Transfer and RPC carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) each. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here. Subsea 7 helps build underwater oil and gas fields. It is a top player in the Oil and Gas Equipment and Services market, which is expected to grow as oil and gas production moves further offshore. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for SUBCY's 2025 EPS is pegged at $1.31. The company has a Value Score of A. Energy Transfer is poised to benefit from long-term fee-based commitments. It is also focused on expanding operations through organic and inorganic initiatives. The firm is looking for solutions to meet growing energy demands from additional demand centers through its pipeline network. Energy Transfer's systematic investments should boost its total fractionation capacity at Mont Belvieu and raise its top line. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for ET's 2025 EPS is pegged at $1.44. Bentley Stops Some Exports to the U.S., Keeps Pricing Steady for June

Bentley has halted imports to the U.S. on "stock" that would sit at dealerships waiting to be sold, a ccording to Automotive News. Bentley will continue to import cars directly ordered by customers and said pricing for U.S. models is guaranteed to remain unchanged on orders placed through the end of June. Bentley had around 378 vehicles left in its dealership stock at the beginning of June. The tariffs implemented by the Trump administration have sown confusion and uncertainty in the automotive industry. Even after officials from the United States and the United Kingdom reached a trade agreement in early May, British automakers are unsure of where they stand. According to a report from Automotive News, Bentley has halted some exports to the U.S. while keeping its current pricing unchanged as it awaits further clarification on this trade agreement and what the tariffs mean for its business. Starting on April 3, the U.S. began imposing a 25 percent tariff on imports of all light-duty vehicles. However, the trade agreement between the U.S. and U.K. will see that tariff reduced to 10 percent for the first 100,000 vehicles imported each year from the U.K. After those first 100,000 vehicles arrive, the 25 percent tariff will go back into action on vehicles shipped from the U.K. Prior to the Trump administration's 25 percent tariff, vehicles imported from the U.K. received a 2.5 percent tariff. Bentley In an interview with Automotive News, the CEO of Bentley Americas, Mike Rocco, said, "We are managing the tariff situation day to day," and that "every U.K. manufacturer is trying to understand the matter." The publication states that other Bentley officials confirmed at a media event in Montana that current pricing for U.S. models is guaranteed for orders placed through the end of June. While orders directly placed by customers will continue to be brought over to the U.S. and delivered to customers, Bentley has stopped shipments of "stock" that would sit at dealerships and need to be sold. These vehicles are instead being held in the United Kingdom for the time being. According to Rocco, Bentley had around 378 vehicles in its U.S. dealership stock at the beginning of June. U.K. automakers brought around 102,000 vehicles to the U.S. in 2024, AN said via the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. Several automakers import vehicles from the U.K., including luxury specialists such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Land Rover, more affordable cars from Mini, and high-performance sports cars from Aston Martin and McLaren. Although the trade deal between the U.S. and U.K. purports to lower the impact of import tariffs relative to the 25 percent hit applied to cars from other countries, the details of how that cap of 100,000 vehicles will be allocated to different automakers remain unclear. It appears that Bentley's approach for the moment is to wait and see how things shake out.
