Denon Takes Shots At Sonos In Multi-Room Speaker War

Denon Takes Shots At Sonos In Multi-Room Speaker War

Forbes15-05-2025

Denon HEOS multi-room speaker
While Sonos continues cleaning up the mess from its disastrous app overhaul, Denon is quietly rolling out some pretty nifty upgrades that feel suspiciously well-timed.
The latest Denon Home update adds Qobuz Connect support, which is a boost for audiophiles who've long wanted native control over the French brand's highly regarded streaming service, with the new platform launching today at High End Munich 2025.
Like Connect options that already exist from the likes of Spotify and Tidal, Qobuz Connect lets you stream high-resolution music directly from the Qobuz app to compatible hi-fi devices, so no Bluetooth, AirPlay, or third-party apps are needed.
It hands off playback to your audio gear, so your phone just acts as a remote, and you can switch between devices without interrupting the music.
But that's not the only boost for Denon as the Japanese audio brand has announced a raft of quality-of-life tweaks to the HEOS ecosystem.
The HEOS app now loads faster (we're told it shaves off two seconds before you see your homescreen populate), and playlist limits have jumped from 300 to 1,000 tracks.
You can also save room group presets and Denon has also added Roon Ready support and network sharing via SMB 3.0.
Denon has had a busy month. A couple of weeks ago, its umbrella company Sound United was sold by the Masimo Corporation to the Samsung-owned Harman International, for a cool $350 million.
That means that Denon, along with Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Polk, and Marantz are now part of a big audio family with the likes of Harman Kardon, JBL, AKG, Mark Levinson, Arcam, and Revel.
Like Sonos, Denon's HEOS range includes a variety of wireless speakers designed for different room sizes and audio needs.
With Sonos still having to make amends to its existing user base, and having a much harder job attracting new users after a disastrous 12 months, brands like Denon have a better chance than ever to steal a march on the ever-expanding multi-room music market.

Mistral releases a vibe coding client, Mistral Code

French AI startup Mistral is releasing its own "vibe coding" client, Mistral Code, to compete with incumbents like Windsurf, Anysphere's Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. Mistral Code, a fork of the open-source project Continue, is an AI-powered coding assistant that bundles Mistral's models, an "in-IDE" assistant, local deployment options, and enterprise tools into a single package. A private beta is available as of Wednesday for JetBrains development platforms and Microsoft's VS Code. "Our goal with Mistral Code is simple: deliver best-in-class coding models to enterprise developers, enabling everything from instant completions to multi-step refactoring through an integrated platform deployable in the cloud, on reserved capacity, or air-gapped, on-prem GPUs," Mistral wrote in a blog post provided to TechCrunch. AI programming assistants are growing increasingly popular. While they still struggle to code quality software, their promise to boost coding productivity is pushing companies and developers to adopt them rapidly. One recent poll found that 76% of developers have used or were planning to use AI tools in their development processes last year. Mistral Code is said to be powered by a combination of in-house models including Codestral (for code autocomplete), Codestral Embed (for code search and retrieval), Devstral (for "agentic" coding tasks), and Mistral Medium (for chat assistance). The client supports more than 80 programming languages and a number of third-party plugins, and can reason over things like files, terminal outputs, and issues, the company said. Mistral claimed that customers including consulting firm Capgemini, Spanish and Portuguese bank Abanca, and French national railway company SNCF are using Mistral Code in production. "Customers can fine-tune or post-train the underlying models on private repositories or distill lightweight variants," Mistral explained in its blog post. "For IT managers, a rich admin console exposes granular platform controls, deep observability, seat management, and usage analytics." Mistral said it plans to continue making improvements to Mistral Code and contribute at least a portion of those upgrades to the Continue open source project. Founded in 2023, Mistral is a frontier model lab building a range of AI-powered services, including a chatbot platform, Le Chat, and mobile apps. It is backed by venture investors like General Catalyst, and has raised over €1.1 billion (roughly $1.24 billion) to date. A few weeks ago, Mistral launched the aforementioned Codestral, Devstral, and Mistral Medium models. Around the same time, the company rolled out Le Chat Enterprise, a corporate-focused chatbot service that offers tools like an AI agent builder, and integrates Mistral's models with third-party services like Gmail, Google Drive, and SharePoint. Rémy Cointreau latest spirits major to ease back on forecasts

Rémy Cointreau has become the latest major distiller to withdraw mid-term guidance. The French spirits group today (4 June) pulled its objectives for 2030 – drawn up a decade ago. The Rémy Martin Cognac maker pointed to 'the continued lack of macroeconomic visibility', tensions over tariffs and uncertainty over when the US market would recover. Rémy Cointreau also cited the appointment of its new CEO, a move announced last week. The Bruichladdich whisky maker said Franck Marilly 'will establish his own strategic roadmap while remaining aligned with the value strategy implemented by the group for decades'. He joins later this month. Analysts expected the withdrawal the guidance, which came alongside the publication of Rémy Cointreau's annual financial results. In February, Diageo pulled its medium-term guidance, citing 'macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty'. The same month, Pernod Ricard cut its sales forecasts, saying 'intense geopolitical uncertainties' were hitting the spirits sector. Rémy Cointreau published its full-year sales at the end of April but today's announcement covered the group's profits. So-called current operating profit fell 28.7% to €217m ($247.8m) and by 30.5% on an organic basis. The group share of net profit decreased 34.4% to €121.2m, or by 36.8% organically. In April, the Cointreau liqueur maker posted an 18% decline in full-year sales on an organic basis to €984.6m. Last year, the group set out plans to find €50m in costs during the fiscal period. It said today it had extracted €85m. For Rémy Cointreau's new 2025-26 financial year, the company expects sales to return to 'mid-single-digit growth on an organic basis'. The company said the recovery would be 'driven primarily by a strong technical rebound in sales to the United States' starting in the first quarter. In a sign of the uncertainty about tariffs, not just on imports to the US but on EU brandy shipments to China, Rémy Cointreau's guidance for current operating profit was for growth 'in the high single-digit to low double-digit range' – but 'excluding any increase in customs duties in China and the United States'. At the moment, the company's 'worst-case scenario' is for the potential increase in tariffs to amount to €100m gross. Rémy Cointreau's share price, down by more than 42% in the last 12 months, was up 5.12% at €49.32 today at 17:00 CEST.
