Vance hits vulnerable Ohio Democrats during stop in Canton
'You know who we do not have in the house right now? We do not have Congresswoman Emilia Sykes,' Vance said, speaking in Canton, Ohio.
'You know why she's not here today? Because she's not celebrating no taxes on tips. She's not celebrating no taxes on overtime. She's not celebrating the highest take-home pay in years because she fought us every step of the way on the big, beautiful bill,' he continued.
Vance went on to say he would not criticize Sykes for disagreeing with Republicans but questioned why she did not work with Republicans on the legislation.
'If you disagreed with it, the Oval Office is always open to anybody, Democrat or Republican, who wants to cut a deal on behalf of the American people,' he said.
Sykes is facing a contentious reelection bid in Ohio's 13th Congressional District, which the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates as a 'toss-up.'
Vance also hit Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Oh.), who represents the state's 9th Congressional District in the Toledo area. Kaptur's district is also considered a toss-up.
'I guess her district is in northwestern Ohio, but you've got a lot of manufacturing and a lot of manufacturing workers in northwestern Ohio who would have benefitted from her 'yes' vote,' he said, referring to Kaptur's vote against Trump's legislative agenda.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) slammed Vance in a prior to his remarks.
'JD Vance's visit to OH-13 is another desperate attempt to lie to Ohioans about the devastating impact the Big, Ugly Law will have on working families, because Washington Republicans can't defend their record of slashing Medicaid to give handouts to billionaires – but they can't deceive Northeast Ohioans who know that Congresswoman Emilia Sykes has always put her community first,' said DCCC spokesperson Katie Smith.

ICE records show that she is being held at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, which Sperber claims is unable to provide her mental health therapy. Her Facebook page says she is originally from Medellín, Antioquia, in Colombia. "Daniela has since been held in an ICE detention center located in Alvarado, Texas, unable to complete her mental health therapy," Sperber wrote on the GoFundMe page he started on July 23. "Prior to this detainment, Daniela has legally lived in America for almost 14 years. She was married to an American citizen for almost 10 years, and she has three children living in the United States that are American citizens." Newsweek reached out to Sperber via the GoFundMe page for comment. As of the afternoon of August 4, the page had received just two donations totaling $80. Sperber described his girlfriend as a "wonderful mother and wonderful companion who has had some trials in her life with abusive relationships. She has been fighting to heal and progress." She has worked for the Oklahoma State Health Department for nearly five years and as director of patient care services at The Bilingual Clinic PLLC, a business started by her ex-husband and father of her children. "She is bilingual and has always strived to help provide the best care for those here in America with language barriers," Sperber said. "She has a character that is caring and loving. Daniela wants, above all, to continue living here legally in the United States so she may care for her children and experience the joy of watching them grow up as any parent would." Daniela's Facebook and Instagram accounts use the name "Daniela Deweber," writing in a March post on Facebook: "Daniela Villada Restrepo is the name my parents gave me, Daniela Deweber is my married name." The GoFundMe was started by Sperber because of legal fees associated with Restrepo's hopeful release, as well as limited funds due to multiple health situations. As Trump pushes tariffs, sons back firm aimed at 'revitalizing' US manufacturing
President Donald Trump's eldest sons are involved in a new business venture aimed partly at 'revitalizing American manufacturing' as their father pursues protectionist economic policies with the same goal. New America Acquisition I Corp, a blank-check firm backed by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., on Aug. 4 filed for an initial public offering of up to $300 million. The special purpose acquisition company, a vehicle previously used by the family to launch firearms retailers and media firms, aims to merge with businesses headquartered or primarily operating in the U.S., it said in a filing. The filing declares the firm is pursing mergers with one or more companies valued at $700 million or more "that play a meaningful role in revitalizing domestic manufacturing, expanding innovation ecosystems and strengthening critical supply chains.' 'Our objective is to target businesses that are not only well-positioned for long-term, sustainable growth, but also deeply aligned with the advancement of U.S. industrial capacity, technological leadership and innovation, and economic resilience," according to the filing. The Trump administration is pursuing an aggressive tariff program on goods coming into the United States, and there are levies on many manufactured products. Trump has encouraged companies to move their manufacturing to the United States. The new SPAC, incorporated in Florida, is the latest Trump family business in a sector the president is seeking to boost. The family is involved in crypto ventures, including a 60% stake in crypto platform World Liberty Financial, working to profit on crypto while the Trump administration pursues favorable policies for the industry. Eric and Trump Jr. will both serve on the advisory board for New America, receiving a combined 5 million shares in the company. Media veteran Kevin McGurn will lead the company. SPACs are shell companies that use their IPO proceeds to merge with a private company, thereby taking it public while avoiding the regulatory scrutiny of a traditional listing.
