Kin of arrested man meet Fauja's family
JALANDHAR: Relatives of Amritpal Singh Dhillon, who has been arrested for the hit-and-run that killed iconic marathoner Fauja Singh, visited the bereaved family in Beas Pind village on Thursday afternoon to condole his death.
Many of them knew the 114-year-old legend personally and it was a massive shock to them when they not only learnt of his death in an accident but also that one of their own was allegedly responsible for it. Amritpal, 26, who works in Canada, was arrested from his home in Dasupur late Tuesday night.
Dasupur is barely 3km from Beas Pind and everyone knows Fauja in these parts, as do lakhs around the globe. According to police, Amritpal told them after his arrest that he didn't know the man he hit on Jalandhar-Pathankot NH Monday afternoon was the world's oldest marathoner.
He told the police he felt guilty when he learnt from news reports that Fauja had died.
However, Amritpal made no attempt to take responsibility. Not only had he sped away, leaving the 114-year-old fatally injured on the highway, he didn't surrender and tried to keep a low profile. But police managed to track him down from a few pieces of a broken headlight, CCTV camera footage and witness accounts.
Confirming that Amritpal's relatives had visited the family, Fauja's son Harbinder said, 'We know that he (Amritpal) did not have any enmity but he should have at least stopped to help.

It is learnt that Amritpal's relatives in the village also came to know about his vehicle hitting Fauja only after police arrived at his home.
Fauja, popularly known as the 'Turbaned Tornado', will be cremated in his village, Beas, at noon on Sunday.

Jharkhand's director general of police (DGP) cum director general (DG) CID speaks to TOI's Sanjay Sahay on the growing impact of cybercrime in the state and how police is working overtime to thwart it. Excerpts:- Q: What is the overall scenario of cybercrime in the state? A: Cyber frauds can be categorised into low-value and high-value crimes. The low-value crimes are taking place by persuading the victims to download APK files in the name of preventing blocking of Aadhar card, bank accounts and other pretexts. The APK files enable the cybercriminals to see the victim's personnel data, which is used for committing the fraud. These crimes are mostly taking place from within the country. The high-value crimes like digital arrests and investment frauds are mostly being carried out from outside the country. Q: What are the measures taken by CID to curb the crimes? A: The victim can lodge their complaints by dialling 1930 or through in case of a fraud. Q: A large number of mule accounts in the state are helping cybercriminals sitting outside the country. What steps are being taken?. A. We have received data about many mule accounts, which are operational in Jharkhand, from Samanvaya portal of MHA and started taking action. Any person who lends his account for cybercrime on commission basis would be jailed. We have registered an FIR against 40 mule accounts having transactions of Rs 10 lakhs and above on Tuesday. Q: What measures have been taken to build infrastructure and manpower to tackle cybercrimes? A: The state govt has been very kind to us in this regard. As per Information Technology Act, only an inspector rank officer can investigate cybercrime cases. The state has, however, permitted that if the DGP desires he can take measures to allow a sub-inspector rank officer to investigate. This has addressed the manpower problem to a considerable extent. The state has also issued a special order allowing an officer air travel for bringing cybercriminals from various parts of the country. However, there is still shortage of trained people with technical knowledge to investigate the cases. We are emphasizing on on-the-job training. There are not many officers who are interested in cybercrime investigation, which is a problem. Missing Silchar man on way home, IndiGo put his assaulter on no-fly list
New Delhi/Silchar: IndiGo on Saturday barred from all its flights a passenger who had assaulted a co-passenger on a Mumbai-Kolkata flight. The 39-year-old man from Cachar, who was initially believed missing after being slapped on board the IndiGo flight on Friday, is now believed to be travelling back home to Cachar by train, officials said. "Following due diligence, the incident involving an unruly customer has been formally reported to the relevant authorities for necessary action. In line with our commitment to discourage such unruly behaviour on board flights, the individual has been suspended from flying on any IndiGo flights, in accordance with regulatory provisions," IndiGo said Saturday. The IndiGo bar is for 30 days pending an inquiry after which a further decision under the provisions of the no-fly list for unruly flyers will be taken. It is up to other Indian airlines to decide whether they, too, want to put the man accused of assault on their no-fly lists till the legal process of putting him on the national no-fly list is completed. SP (Cachar) Numal Mahatta told media that the victim may have boarded a train to Silchar, and efforts are underway to establish direct contact with him.
