Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A Michigan man used some of his $300 in lottery winnings to buy another ticket -- scoring a $714,891 progressive jackpot prize.
The 39-year-old Kent County man told Michigan Lottery officials he was at the Exit 76 - Meadowbrooke store on Town Center Court Southeast in Grand Rapids when he decided to try his luck with Fast Play games.
"I usually play scratch off tickets, but I bought a $30 Jumbo Jackpot Slots Fast Cash ticket on a whim and ended up winning $300," the player said. "When I cashed that ticket, I used $20 of my winnings to buy a Super Lucky 7s ticket."
The man's whim paid off when he won the progressive jackpot.
"I scanned the ticket on the Michigan Lottery app and started shaking when I saw I'd won $714,891. The first thing I did was walk over and give the cashier a hug," he said.
The winner said his prize money will go toward paying bills, bolstering his children's college funds and boosting his own savings account.

Navy ship catches fire near Japan coast; minor injuries reported

The transport dock ship USS New Orleans caught fire Wednesday off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. Only minor injuries were reported. File Photo by Jared Apollo Burgamy/U.S. Navy/UPI | License Photo Aug. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy reported a fire aboard the amphibious docking ship USS New Orleans on Thursday. It was anchored near White Beach Naval Facility in Okinawa, Japan. U.S. Navy crews and Japanese Coast Guard crews extinguished the fire about 4 a.m. Japan Standard Time, the Navy's 7th Fleet said. The blaze began at about 4 and the cause is under investigation. The crew of the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego helped New Orleans sailors fight the fire. The San Diego is moored at White Beach. Two sailors suffered minor injuries and were treated aboard the New Orleans. The New Orleans crew will stay aboard the ship, the Navy said. The fire could further hurt the availability of amphibious warships while the Navy is struggling with readiness issues within the fleet, the Navy Times said. The readiness rate of amphibious ships critical to Marine missions has dropped to 41%, a defense official told Military Times earlier this week. An investigation by the Government Accountability Office in 2024 found that half of the U.S. Navy's 32 amphibious warfare ships were in poor material condition. The New Orleans collided with submarine USS Hartford in the Strait of Hormuz in 2009.
