Wooting's 80HE Feels Like the Pinnacle of Hall Effect Keyboards

WIRED02-07-2025
Wooting was one of the first analog keyboard brands to break into the mainstream. When the original Wooting One TKL launched, it was a big deal—optical switch technology was still new to most people, and the idea of a keyboard with hyper-fast, adjustable key actuations was both novel and revolutionary at the time.
Later, when it debuted its Lekker Hall effect switch in the Wooting Two, it was one of the first companies to utilize the technology for gaming. Things ramped up in 2020 with the release of the Wooting 60HE: Wooting was taking preorders months in advance, the keyboard was reselling with massive markups, and Hall effect completely overshadowed optical switches as the next big thing.
Now, Hall effect keyboards are a dime a dozen. It kicked off an arms race, and Wooting's 60HE fell behind. But with the new Wooting 80HE, the company returned to the tenkeyless (TKL) layout of its first keyboard and made a keyboard that's not only competitive but impressive. The 80HE has every feature I want in a Hall effect keyboard, without any of the mistakes I commonly see. It's robust, reliable, and easy to repair.
The 80HE has two versions, one with a plastic case and the other with a zinc alloy. The plastic version retails for $200 and comes in opaque black or transparent gray. The zinc alloy model costs $290 and includes a carrying case. It comes in black or white. You can also get the keyboard in ANSI, ISO, and JIS layouts. I tested the zinc alloy case in black with a standard ANSI layout. Fantastic Functionality

For nearly every Hall effect keyboard I've reviewed, software has been a sore spot. They've been buggy, awkward, poorly designed, filled with advertisements, or just plain unintuitive. Even the best software I've tested, from Keychron, has minor issues with connectivity and setting functions.
This is where Wooting stands out. Its in-house app, Wootility, is great. It's a simple, lightweight utility that provides extensive adjustments and customizations. It's available both in-browser and as a downloadable executable, meaning you can access it anywhere and use it offline. More than that, every part of its design makes sense: The application is organized, easy to use, intuitive, and explains every setting. Plus, during my entire time using the browser version, I never ran into connectivity issues—the minute I hit 'enter' for the URL, it recognized the keyboard. This isn't the case for most in-browser keyboard utilities, which don't always want to connect.
Even niche features like gamepad emulation worked flawlessly. I replicated the analog inputs of an Xbox controller's stick and triggers without any hiccups or confusion, adjusting the settings on the fly and still maintaining keyboard inputs for unmapped keys. I even put down a half-decent lap time in Art of Rally after a bit of practice (and a few crashes).

Europe's CISPE challenges Broadcom's $69 billion VMware deal in EU court

(Reuters) -European Union judges could review chipmaker Broadcom's $69 billion acquisition of cloud computing firm VMWare, after an antitrust complaint opposed the bloc's approval of one of the biggest takeovers in the technology industry. The Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe, or CISPE, has filed a formal appeal before the European General Court seeking an annulment of the European Commission's approval of the deal, the organisation said on Thursday. Broadcom had wrapped up the purchase of VMWare in November 2023, after intense scrutiny from regulators globally forced the company to delay the closing date thrice. The European Commission's official summary of its approval decision was published in May, acknowledging that the acquisition posed significant risks to competition. "However, it failed to impose any conditions on Broadcom to prevent a concentration of dominance or to mitigate the potential abuse of such a position," CISPE said. CISPE said it has "consistently raised alarms" with the Commission over Broadcom's unfair software licensing practices, but no substantive action has been taken to support either European cloud service providers or their customers. VMware's dominance of software in the virtualisation market "means that unfair new licensing terms enforced by Broadcom affect almost every European organisation using cloud technology", said Francisco Mingorance, Secretary General of CISPE. A spokesperson for the European Commission said it is ready to defend its decisions in court. "Broadcom strongly disagrees with these allegations," a company spokesperson said, adding that the deal was approved after a "thorough merger review process, and we will uphold the commitments made to the Commission at that time." The deal, one of the biggest globally when announced in May 2022, was part of Broadcom CEO Hock Tan's efforts to boost the chipmaker's software business. Zenvo Is Making a Small Hypercar With a Naturally Aspirated V-10 Engine

Zenvo's 1,850 brake horsepower, V-12 powered Aurora was one of the more pleasant surprises of 2023, a new hypercar with real aspirations. Now, the car maker says it's working on a smaller version, too, a 'junior hypercar' powered by a V-10 that might be a bit more accessible. Zenvo doesn't have a prototype of this car that it can reveal, or even a name just yet, but the V-12 that the company is putting in the Aurora is versatile enough to slim down to a V-10 and possibly even a V-8. That has made Zenvo think of worlds beyond the hybrid Aurora, which is a would-be competitor to cars like the Koenigsegg Jesko. More from Robb Report Inside a Stately $9.5 Million Mansion on Washington D.C.'s Embassy Row A Record-Breaking Penthouse Sale in Asbury Park Signals a Bold New Chapter for the Jersey Shore This Year's Champagne Harvest Is 'Promising,' but the Yield Will Be the Lowest Since Covid 'We're already working on a V-10 version for our junior hypercar,' Jens Sverdrup, Zenvo's chairman, told Top Gear, adding that the V-10 would likely be naturally aspirated, as opposed to the quad-turbo V-12 in the Aurora. 'The engine was designed from day one with future-proofing in mind, so it can be naturally aspirated, it can of course run as a non-hybrid too if need be. Emissions are the real issue though. I think it will be tough to meet the next set of requirements without running a hybrid system.' A naturally aspirated V-10 version of the Aurora engine might make something in the realm of 800 horsepower, which would make this junior hypercar exist probably in the same general space as a car like the Lamborghini Huracán. A V-10 Zenvo is also, for now, merely a thing the company is working on, which means that it's a long way from execution. Zenvo still has to make sure the Aurora is a success at first, too. In that regard, Zenvo seems on track, with the Aurora making its operational debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this month and charging up the hill. The company is almost explicitly pitting itself directly against Koenigsegg, the Swedish hypercar maker, which is a formidable task but reminiscent of the days when regular old supercar makers like Lamborghini and Ferrari would go head-to-head. Zenvo, for example, says it is solely a hypercar company and won't be bothering with lesser vehicles like an SUV. 'There's no ambition to start doing family cars,' Sverdrup told Top Gear. 'Something like a Koenigsegg Gemera wouldn't be on our radar. But yes, we're planning a junior hypercar and hopefully we could make up to 500 of those, depending on what the brand and the market would take … I would love to make hypercars in new genres, too, so not an SUV but a hyper off-roader.' That's big talk for a relative newbie on the scene, but that's what you have to say to get noticed. Delivery remains to be seen.
