Tommy Fleetwood on string of PGA Tour near-misses: ‘I'll get it right'
August 19 - Time and again, Tommy Fleetwood has come up just short of winning on the PGA Tour. But he'd rather harness his emotions into something positive than give in to the anger and the doubt. "I've thrown the odd club in the water or something when I'm out there and maybe feel a bit better for a while," Fleetwood quipped Tuesday. "But I'm not that great at being angry. It just doesn't suit me." The accomplished Englishman has yet to win stateside, and the near-misses this season no doubt have stung. But he didn't need a victory to finish fifth in the FedEx Cup points standings ahead of this week's Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Fleetwood's season is inarguably strong on paper -- seven top-10s, only one missed cut in 18 events -- and he has tied for third and tied for fourth at the first two legs of the FedEx Cup playoffs. But the T3 finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship came after a late bogey Sunday meant he would not join a playoff between J.J. Spaun and countryman Justin Rose, the eventual champ. "It's funny, really -- you walk off the course on Sunday last week and I was happier with a fourth-place finish than I was with a third in Memphis," Fleetwood told reporters. "It's a strange game that way. But just very happy with the consistency of my golf and the level I've been playing at. "Golf is a crazy game. You never know what you're going to turn up with week in and week out, but this year has been a very good year, and the last few weeks have been good as well." Another heartbreaker Fleetwood endured came in June at the Travelers Championship, a signature event and the site of his sixth career runner-up finish on tour. After blazing rounds of 66, 65 and 63, he ceded the lead late on Sunday to Keegan Bradley, who made an improbable birdie on No. 18 while Fleetwood three-putted for bogey and signed for a 72. "I work really hard on making sure that I make it all into a positive," Fleetwood said. "Of course, I'm not going to feed you lies and say, 'Oh, Memphis I thought I did everything great,' or 'Travelers I didn't do anything wrong.' Of course I got things wrong down the stretch and it didn't happen for me. "But you just learn from those experiences, and I think the overriding, I guess, emotions are a lot of positives. I would rather you be questioning me about not finishing tournaments off than not questioning me at all about anything. So I've obviously shown a lot of really good stuff and put myself in great positions. "I've said every single time that I just want to put myself there again. I want to give myself another chance. I'll finish it off at some point. I'll get it right and I'll get it right more than once. But being there is actually the hard part in a way." He said the disappointments are motivation, and the positives -- the numerous great finishes, the fact that he's a lock for Europe's Ryder Cup team -- can serve as confidence boosters. Fleetwood will tee off Thursday with the same chance as the other 29 players in the field to win the Tour Championship and hoist the FedEx Cup. Gone is the staggered "starting strokes" format, which would have allowed World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to start the week at 10 under and Fleetwood at 5 under. Four rounds of golf from now, the man with the lowest score is the winner of the tournament, the FedEx Cup and $10 million. What a time for Fleetwood's first PGA Tour win to come. "I'm not going to be picky about which one I choose to have as the first one. This one would be a good one," Fleetwood said. .".. But I think it would be pretty funny if I won this week and then got the FedEx Cup as well. I think that would be funny." --Field Level Media

Aberdeen's former £2million striker joins new club in New Zealand
Former Aberdeen striker Sam Cosgrove has embarked on a new challenge after joining Auckland FC in New Zealand. The 28-year-old has joined the Black Knights from English League One side Barnsley, where he scored seven goals and registered six assists across 60 games. Cosgrove, who scored 47 goals in 103 appearances for the Dons before joining Birmingham City in a £2million deal in 2021, is relishing his new challenge in New Zealand. He told the Auckland FC website: 'I spent a lot of time researching the club before I made the move, and the more I heard, the more I wanted to join. 'What the club has achieved, the way the city has got behind the team, I was eager to be a part of it. 'I've had a couple of training sessions now and spent some time with the team. 'The culture and togetherness are outstanding. Being from overseas, I'm still adjusting, but everyone has been so supportive and friendly.' Auckland finished first in the A League last season to progress to the finals where they were eliminated at the semi-final stage by Melbourne Victory. Cosgrove joins the Auckland squad for Saturday's Australia Cup semi-final against Sydney. The Black Knights will then play a friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers next week. Auckland head coach Steve Corica is delighted to have the experienced Englishman on board. He said: 'Sam is going to be a great acquisition and will provide firepower to the front line. He's a proven goal-scorer and we're pleased to have secured his signature. 'He is a big, physical striker who I think will be well-suited to the league. He's also got a great deal of experience. We're looking forward to having him as part of the group. 'We're an ambitious group keen to improve on last year's performance, so right now, we're focused on building a squad to do that. 'That requires depth in every position and a team that fights for the right to play each week.'

'We are very noisy' - What to expect from FCSB's Peluza Nord fans at Pittodrie as hundreds ready for Aberdeen trip
FCSB's 'very noisy' fans will out-sing Aberdeen's Pittodrie home crowd during Thursday's Europa League play-off first leg, they have told The Press and Journal. Romanian champions FCSB's ultras, Peluza Nord, say up to 300 supporters will fly in to the Granite City from Bucharest on the day of the game – with Scotland-based fans set to help them sell out their South Stand allocation of 700 tickets. A spokesperson for the Peluza Nord group said: 'From Romania, we expect about 250-300 fans. 'Last year when we played in Scotland (4-0 Europa League defeat to Rangers), there were about 1,000 fans. 'There is a fairly large Romanian community there, so we expect to buy all the available tickets in the away section – around 700, I understand. 'The fans from Romania will arrive on Thursday by plane, mostly directly. There is also a small part who will arrive on Thursday by car from other cities.' Despite what will be a big numerical advantage for Aberdeen fans, they added: 'We are very noisy and we sing the whole match, so we expect to be above those from Aberdeen in terms of being noisy. 'We will probably walk around the city centre on Thursday, around the stadium. 'We don't have any recommendations (on where to gather) yet – usually the people from the away team should send information with which areas they have prepared for us.' During Aberdeen's Conference League group campaign in 2023/24, rival fans were encouraged to congregate at the Castlegate, before being escorted to Pittodrie for matches. This included the famously-raucous fans of Greek side PAOK. Aberdeen and FCSB will do battle over two legs for a place in the Europa League's league phase. while the loser will drop into this term's Conference League. Jimmy Thelin's Dons tuned up for the first leg at home with a 3-0 Premier Sports Cup win at Championship Morton. Meanwhile, FCSB blew a 2-0 lead against Rapid Bucharest in the final stages of their derby to draw 2-2. Nevertheless, the FCSB ultras spokesperson believes the team are 'coming back into form' and beating them will be a difficult task for the Dons. They said: 'Expect a very tough match. 'We are hoping for a good result that will make us favorites in the return leg.'
