67 million to one - Whitnell hits two holes-in-one

Englishman Dale Whitnell carded a remarkable two holes-in-one during his round on the second day of the South Africa aced the 179-yard second and repeated the trick on the 149-yard 12th at Durban Country 36-year-old immediately followed his first hole-in-one with an eagle and he was chasing a remarkable 13-under-par 59 until making a double bogey - including an air shot - on the eventual score of 63 beat his level-par Thursday round by nine shots."Coming back this morning I knew I was struggling to make the cut, so I knew I needed to go out and play well and I got off to a hot start," Whitnell told DP World Tour."I birdied the first and hit a flush seven iron on the second, I didn't realise it had gone in until they cheered down at the bottom."Then I got another hole-in-one on the 12th. Bizarre."It's a weird feeling, everything in one. I was excited and adrenalin was pumping, but I had to focus on my job and managed to do that OK."Whitnell, who hails from Essex and sits 545th in the world rankings, had never previously achieved a hole-in-one in US-based National Hole-in-One Registry says the odds of carding two in the same round are 67 million to is just the second Englishman to have made two holes-in-one in the same round in professional competition, after John Hudson, who achieved the feat in the European Tour's Martini International at Royal Norwich in double was made even more impressive by the fact that he managed to do it across successive holes, with the second coming at a 314-yard par Frank Bensel Jr also made two holes-in-one on consecutive holes at the 2024 US Senior Open.

Tarren's stumbles after fast start, but patience pays off in Bahrain

Callum Tarren leads by two shots at the halfway stage of the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship after battling back from a slow start to get to 13 under par with a second round 67 on the DP World Tour.. The Englishman fired a bogey-free first round 64 at Royal Golf Club, but had to be patient in the early stages of Friday afternoon as he dropped a shot on the opening hole and made another bgey on the fourth to slip further off the pace set by Italy's Andrea Pavan. The 34 year-old bounced back in style, carding four birdies in his next five holes, and the birdies kept coming on the back nine. He picked up shots at the 11th, 13th and 14th to head into the weekend two ahead of Pavan - who held the early clubhouse lead after notching eight birdies and a single bogey - and fellow Englishman Dan Brown, who also carded a seven under 65. Pablo Larrazábal is a shot further back at ten under after making a memorable hole-in-one at the second in his round of 68. The Spaniard, who is chasing a 10th DP World Tour title, holed his tee-shot at the 192-yard par-three with a six iron to seal the sixth ace of his career. Finland's Tapio Pulkkanen is then at nine under, with overnight leader Brandon Robinson Thompson amongst the group of five players a shot further back after following up his course record 61 on Thursday with a three over 75. Tarren said on completing his round: "I got off to a shaky start today, but I knew I was playing good golf, so I just stayed patient. A few bounce-back birdies, and I played really solid again. So just more of that and see what happens.. "I misjudged the wind on one, got it riding the wind and hit it up against the fence. I could hit it, but it was against a rock so didn't want to risk that. I just said, ride this tough start, but plenty of chances out there. Managed to capitalise on a few good shots. "There were a couple in the middle of the round where I hit it to two feet and a foot with nine iron and a wedge:" he sadded. "A couple of good saves coming in, a couple of good putts. The par save on 16. That kept the momentum going. Shame about the last (missed birdie chance) but I'm ready to tackle the weekend. "Our first six, seven holes it was blowing but died off a bit, just tried to take advantage then and managed to do so. Just got to keep giving myself chances.. "I've got to keep the foot to the floor because the course will yield birdies to the guys behind me. Just keep doing what I'm doing, stay patient. I feel very relaxed this week for some reason, I don't know why. I just feel super chilled, so hopefully that's a good omen," Tarren concluded.

Robinson-Thompson sets course record in Bahrain

Golfer Brandon Robinson-Thompson set a course record of 61 and took an early three-shot lead in the first round of the Bahrain Championships. From the Isle of Wight, Robinson-Thompson is competing in his first season of the DP World Tour and was delighted with his start in Bahrain. "I didn't picture this outcome this morning when it was raining and there was a forecast of strong winds," Robinson-Thompson told the DP World Tour., external"I was very happy to get off to the start that I did, it was an accumulation of a lot of good decision-making, execution, and I made a lot of puts."It wasn't perfect but I was smart when I had to be, there is a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth because of the end but I hold my fair share."The 32-year-old came within touching distance of breaking a tour record set by Oliver Fisher, who became the first player on the European Tour to shoot a round of 59, at the 2018 Portugal the first 17 holes, Robinson-Thompson recorded eight birdies and two eagles to put himself on 56 stokes and in need of a birdie to match the record going into the final hole. The Briton then bogeyed the 18th hole, ending the round frustratingly despite a career-best score. "This has to be my first or second-best round ever, surely," he added."It is my lowest round as a professional I'm pretty sure. I'm going to do a lot of the same stuff going forward."I'm working with a new caddy at the moment and he's great, we get along well and talk through everything. We'll be having a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to it."
