Zahid: Multi-cornered fights in Sabah polls ‘unavoidable' despite BN-Pakatan pact

Malay Maila day ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Barisan Nasional (BN) has confirmed that it has not held any official discussions with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) on seat negotiations or cooperation ahead of the Sabah state election.
According to national daily Utusan Malaysia, BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi acknowledged that at least three-cornered fights were unavoidable due to the likelihood of participation by other parties, including new ones.
He stressed, however, that there would be no clashes or overlapping seats between BN and its ally, Pakatan Harapan (PH), while respecting negotiations between PH and GRS.
'What has been finalised is BN-PH, and we respect PH-GRS. There are no direct negotiations between BN and GRS. So far, any other talks to avoid three-cornered contests or overlapping seats are taking place behind the scenes.
'However, I believe that with so many new parties in Sabah wanting to contest this time, three-cornered contests cannot be avoided — it could even go up to eight-cornered fights.
'That's the reality of Sabah's political landscape. But BN and PH will not clash in any seats,' he told reporters at the 16th National-level Civil Defence Student Corps (Kor Sispa) Graduation Parade and Commissioning Ceremony in Shah Alam today.
Utusan Malaysia previously reported that efforts to form a BN-PH-GRS coalition to face the Sabah polls, expected in October, were becoming increasingly difficult as seat negotiations had reached an impasse.
Although such a coalition was seen as a way to avoid vote-splitting and secure a majority victory, GRS' demand to contest at least 70 out of the 73 state assembly seats has raised concerns, particularly in BN's traditional strongholds.
If GRS insists on its demand, the chances of forming a grand coalition may collapse. But if GRS is willing to soften its stance and renegotiate, the path towards establishing a unity government at the state level could still be realised.

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan will require all of its election candidates to sign a binding contract to ensure seats won under the party remain with the party, says its president, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. 'If a representative wins on Warisan's ticket, the seat stays with Warisan,' he told reporters at a gathering with some 2,500 people in Kudat town on Sunday (Aug 17). Shafie cited the court ruling involving former PKR minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, who was ordered to pay compensation for leaving her party, saying this should serve as a precedent. Shafie also confirmed Warisan would defend its seat in Tanjung Kapur and field candidates in the other 72 state constituencies. Regarding development, he disclosed plans to allocate 600ha in Kudat for a new port facility that would include ship maintenance, shipbuilding, and fuel supply services. Hajiji confirms Shahelmy to contest under GRS in state polls

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Hajiji confirms that Shahelmey (inset) will contest under GRS in the state polls. PUTATAN: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has confirmed that Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmy Yahya will contest under the coalition's banner in the upcoming 17th State Election. Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, expressed confidence that Shahelmy would retain the Tanjung Keramat seat while contributing another victory to GRS as the Member of Parliament for Putatan. Speaking after officiating the Young People Programme at Dewan Sri Putatan on Sunday, Hajiji said Shahelmy's dual roles as state assemblyman and MP placed him in a strong position to defend his constituency. Shahelmy, who is also the State Works Minister, won the Tanjung Keramat seat under Umno/Barisan Nasional during the last state polls with a majority of 4,594 votes against four challengers. However, Sabah Umno had earlier announced that Shahelmy would not be renominated following his decision not to support the 'Langkah Kinabalu' move, which aimed to unseat Hajiji's administration. The initiative failed when Hajiji secured the backing of Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) alongside several Umno representatives, including Shahelmy, ensuring political stability for the state. Looking ahead, Hajiji, who is also president of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), voiced optimism that GRS would secure not only Tanjung Keramat but also the Petagas and Tanjung Aru seats, citing the government's delivery of education, welfare, social and economic initiatives under the Sabah Maju Jaya plan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
