Poland asks EU to probe Grok over 'offensive,' 'erratic' statements
July 10 (UPI) -- Polish Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski asked the EU to investigate Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into the X social media platform.
Gawkowski penned a letter to EU Executive Vice President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen on Wednesday to ask her to open an investigation into Grok's recent "offesnive remarks" and "erratic and full of expletive-laden rants."
"There is reason enough to think, that negative effects for the exercise of fundamental rights, were not made by accident, but by design," Krzysztof wrote.
Comments made by Grok allegedly include posts that celebrate Hitler, among several other anti-Semitic and hateful statements. X has reportedly taken the posts down.
Gawkowski's letter accused X of serving as "a major infringement of the DSA," the EU's Digital Services Act. He also alleged Grok has posted offensive remarks to X users, including offensive comments against the Polish government.
"Grok's responses were erratic and full of expletive-laden rants which could be described in many cases as defamation," wrote Gawkowski.
In a radio interview Wednesday, he said he also requested that Poland's Digital Services Coordinator investigate as well.
European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier commented Wednesday to Euractiv and explained that "Grok is integrated into a designated very large online platform under the DSA."
"X therefore has the obligation to assess and mitigate any potential risks stemming from the tool," he added.
However, it remains unclear whether a new, separate investigation will take place.
"We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts. Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X," X said in a post Tuesday.
It is also unclear if this post was from an anonymous X employee or Grok itself, but it did continue that "xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved."

London police arrest 466 people for backing banned Palestine Action group
The Middle East UKFacebookTweetLink Follow Police have arrested 466 people in central London on Saturday for protesting the British government's decision to ban the pro-Palestinian activist group Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws. 'As of 9pm, 466 people had been arrested for showing support for Palestine Action,' the Metropolitan Police wrote on X on Saturday. Eight arrests were made for other offences, including five for assaults on officers, but police said none were seriously injured. Palestine Action is a UK-based group which says it aims to disrupt the operations of weapons manufacturers supplying the Israeli government. Last month, UK lawmakers voted to proscribe the group after two Palestine Action activists broke into Britain's largest air base in central England in June, damaging two military aircraft. The group's ban makes it illegal under UK law to be a member of – or invite support for – Palestine Action and puts them on par with terrorist organizations such as Hamas, al Qaeda and ISIS. Large crowds turned up for demonstrations organized by Defend Our Juries on Saturday afternoon at London's Parliament Square. London's Metropolitan Police had cautioned that it would arrest anyone showing support for the proscribed group. One 80-year-old protestor from Surrey, England, who wished to remain anonymous, told CNN that she attended the protest to show 'what a farce' the government's decision on Palestine Action was. She said organizers were aiming to have at least 500 people sitting peacefully with signs. 'I watched a few being carried off by police but there simply weren't enough police to arrest all,' she added. The demonstration organizers said on social media that upwards of one thousand people attended the protest, 'holding up signs that read 'I oppose Genocide, I support Palestine Action'' in a mass display of defiance against (British Home Secretary) Yvette Cooper's ban.' The Metropolitan Police stated that approximately 500 to 600 people were in attendance when the demonstration began. 'Many were onlookers, media, or people not holding placards supporting Palestine Action,' police said in an earlier statement. 'We are confident that anyone who came to Parliament Square today to hold a placard expressing support for Palestine Action was either arrested or is in the process of being arrested,' Scotland Yard added. Those arrested at the protest were taken to 'prisoner processing points in the Westminster area, and those whose details could be confirmed were bailed, with conditions not to attend any further protest in support of Palestine Action,' police also said. A CNN team on the ground witnessed scuffles between protestors and police, as demonstrators were arrested and taken away for supporting Palestine Action. Onlookers were heard shouting 'shame on you' as police officers removed peaceful protestors from the area. British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper thanked police for 'dealing with the very small number of people whose actions crossed the line into criminality.' 'The right to protest is one we protect fiercely but this is very different from displaying support for this one specific and narrow, proscribed organisation,' she said, according to the UK's Press Association. Amnesty International UK condemned the arrest of peaceful protesters as 'a violation of the UK's international obligations to protect the rights of freedom of expression and assembly,' in a post on X. Last week, Palestine Action's co-founder Huda Ammori won a bid to challenge the ban, with a London High Court judge granting permission to seek a judicial review. Vance in UK for high-stakes diplomacy day after Trump announces Putin meeting
Vice President JD Vance met with European allies and Ukrainian officials in a day of high-stakes diplomatic talks on Saturday -- less than a week before a historic meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The talks in the UK came just a day after Trump announced the face-to-face meeting with Putin set for Aug. 15 in Alaska to continue negotiations to end the war that has dragged on for more than three years. A U.S. official told ABC News the Saturday talks Vance took part in "produced significant progress toward President Trump's goal of bringing an end to the war in Ukraine." The talks Saturday took place at the UK foreign secretary's estate, Chevening House in Kent, England. Vance met with Foreign Secretary David Lammy and representatives from Ukraine and other European allies. The UK meeting came as the upcoming Trump-Putin summit -- set to happen without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the table -- has raised concern among Ukrainian officials and across Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron said Saturday morning he had spoken with both Zelenskyy and other European leaders and that, "The future of Ukraine cannot be decided without the Ukrainians who have been fighting for their freedom and security for over three years now." Speaking from the White House on Friday, Trump suggested discussions to end the war could include "some swapping of territories," which Zelenskyy later swiftly rejected, saying Ukraine 'will not give Russia any awards for what it has done' and that 'Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier.' Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian officials have also insisted that any negotiations must include Ukraine at the table. "Our positions were clear: a reliable, lasting peace is only possible with Ukraine at the negotiating table, with full respect for our sovereignty and without recognizing the occupation," Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, said in a statement Saturday that also thanked JD Vance for taking part in the UK talks. "All our messages were conveyed," Zelenskyy said of the talks with Vance. "Our arguments are being heard. The risks are being taken into account. The path to peace for Ukraine must be determined together – and only together – with Ukraine. This is fundamental. Friday marked the deadline Trump set for Putin to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine or face "secondary sanctions" against countries that buy oil from Russia. But uncertainty remained as to whether the U.S. would hit Moscow with new economic penalties — and Trump has now agreed to meet with Putin. The meeting in Alaska will be Putin's first meeting with a major Western leader since Russia invaded Ukraine more than three years ago -- and his first visit to the U.S. in 10 years.

Alphabet (GOOGL) Commits $1B to AI Training and Tools for Higher Education
Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is one of the Hot AI Stocks on Wall Street's Radar. On August 6, Alphabet's Google announced a three-year, $1 billion commitment for providing artificial intelligence training and tools to U.S. higher education institutions and nonprofits. The initiative has been signed on by more than a 100 universities, with prominent names including Texas A&M and the University of North Carolina. According to the report, participating schools may receive cash funding and resources. This includes cloud computing credits towards AI training for students or research on AI-related topics. The billion-dollar investment will also include the value of paid AI tools, such as an advanced version of the Gemini chatbot. Google will be giving this to college students for free. Senior Vice President James Manyika also noted that the company plans to extend the program to every accredited nonprofit college in the U.S and likewise to other countries. While Google hasn't faced resistance from administrators regarding the initiative, 'many more questions' about AI-related concerns remain.
