Italy sack Spalletti after Norway defeat

MILAN: Luciano Spalletti has been sacked from his role as Italy's coach, the manager said on Sunday, following their heavy loss to Norway, but will take charge of Monday's game against Moldova. Spalletti made the announcement at a press conference after Norway stunned Italy with a 3-0 win on Friday, handing the visitors a humiliating start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. "Last night we were together with (Italian football federation) president (Gabriele) Gravina. He told me that I will be relieved of my position as coach of the national team," Spalletti said. "I had no intention of giving up. I would have preferred to stay in my place and continue doing my job. I'll be there tomorrow evening against Moldova, then we'll resolve the contract." Spalletti's dismissal comes after less than two years in the role, having replaced Roberto Mancini and taking charge in September 2023. While Spalletti took Italy to Euro 2024, their disappointing performance there had already put the manager under pressure. Italy went into the Euros last year in Germany as defending champions but after winning their opening game against Albania, they lost to Spain and snatched a late draw with Croatia to make the last 16 where they were beaten 2-0 by Switzerland. Spalletti's side seemed to have recovered as they put in an impressive Nations League campaign, beating France 3-1 away and losing just once. They lost at home to the French in the final group game to finish behind France on goal difference. Italy began this year with a 2-1 loss at the San Siro in their Nations League quarter-final first leg with Germany and found themselves 3-0 down at halftime in the return game in Dortmund. Spalletti's side came back to salvage a draw but missed out on a semi-final place and when they fell 3-0 behind at the break against Norway, this time Italy had no reply. The loss left Spalletti's side already facing an uphill battle to secure automatic qualification for next year's World Cup, and after Italy missed out on the last two finals, the Italian football federation (FIGC) decided to act. — Reuters

Spain's Marc Marquez wins Aragon MotoGP

ALCANIZ, Spain: Six-time world champion Marc Marquez eased to victory over his younger brother Alex in the Aragon MotoGP on Sunday to extend his lead in this season's title race. Marc Marquez led from start to finish on his Ducati to record his seventh win in this race from 11 starts and his fourth victory of the campaign. He leads his brother by 32 points after eight of the 22-race programme with two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia, who was third, 93 points adrift. Marc is well set for a seventh world title which would bring him level with Valentino Rossi and one shy of the record held by the latter's fellow Italian Giacomo Agostini. "Yes a perfect weekend," said Marc Marquez, who became the first rider since he did the same in the 2015 German MotoGP to top all the practice sessions, take pole and win the race. "I was more serious than usual as I felt I couldn't afford to make mistakes. "I rode in a very good way," added Marc, who ended a three-race losing streak. The two brothers got off their bikes halfway round the victory lap and jumped into each other's arms, though, unable to kiss as they still had their helmets on and sending the 50,000 spectators wild. "To be brothers and Spanish in front of a home crowd is extra special for me," said Alex Marquez, who at 29 is three years his brother's junior. Marc echoed his words and said it made up for the disappointment of the Spanish MotoGP in April when Alex won but he only finished 12th. "I was sad when he won the race in Jerez," he said. "Let's see in Catalunya if we can repeat that but hopefully we swap positions and Alex wins." Marc Marquez (R) celebrates alongside 2nd place Alex Marquez. — Reuters CONFIDENCE A podium finish put a smile back on the face of Marc's Ducati team-mate Bagnaia, who had described Saturday's 12th spot in the sprint as the "toughest of his career." "Today I recovered a lot of confidence and I can go to Mugello in a fortnight with a spring in my step," said Bagnaia. Marc Marquez got a great start leading Alex, but the other front row sitter Franco Morbidelli fell well back to seventh spot, whilst Bagnaia shot through from the second row to take third spot. Bagnaia turned the pressure on Alex Marquez but after a while he dropped off and was trading third and fourth places with Pedro Acosta over the opening few laps. Indeed the Marquez brothers opened a gap back to Bagnaia, Acosta, Brad Binder and Morbidelli, who had recovered a bit from his sluggish start. By halfway Marc Marquez posted the fastest lap thus far and extended his lead to over two seconds. It was also the moment that South African rider Binder's hopes of recording his best result of a poor campaign were dashed as he slid off. His KTM boss Aki Ajo jumped down from his vantage point and wrung his hands in frustration. The race began to take its toll as 2021 world champion Fabio Quartararo also went off whilst contesting ninth spot. His fellow French rider Johann Zarco's hopes of a third successive podium finish had ended a bit earlier. Whilst up front was becoming a bit of a procession the more exciting tussle was between Morbidelli and rookie Fermin Aldeguer for fifth and sixth spots. Both gave no quarter, rubbing elbows as they vied to get the better of each other and it was Morbidelli who eventually prevailed after a final dig into Aldeguer's ribs on the penultimate lap. — AFP

Oman leverages ‘precision agriculture' to strengthen food security

MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman is increasingly harnessing technology and innovation to expand and diversify its agricultural base, with the goal of strengthening food security in a sustainable manner. To this end, various state-owned enterprises are deploying precision agriculture techniques—centered on the use of AI and other tech-based tools—to boost crop yields and food production while minimizing water use and other inputs. This technology-driven approach has been emphasized by Saud Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, in a recent interview featured in Oxford Business Group's (OBG) 2025 annual spotlight on Oman. 'Oman's agricultural strategy over the next five to ten years prioritizes strengthening food security by diversifying crop production, increasing livestock numbers, and boosting aquaculture. Diversifying crops aims to make the Sultanate more self-sufficient and reduce dependency on imports,' Al Habsi said. 'To make Omani agricultural products more competitive on a regional scale, modern farming practices—such as precision agriculture and sustainable methods—are being adopted to improve yields and reduce input costs. Additionally, the development of food safety systems and the improvement of food establishments enhance product value while minimizing food loss and waste. Export markets are being developed through quality certification, targeted marketing, and collaboration with trade bodies to ensure Omani products meet international standards,' the Minister added. Precision agriculture is a modern farming practice that uses advanced technologies to monitor, measure, and respond to variability in fields, with the goal of optimizing productivity while reducing waste and environmental impact. It involves tools such as GPS-guided tractors and harvesters, soil and crop sensors, drones and aerial imaging, satellite-based remote sensing, and AI-powered farm management software. According to Al Habsi, technology and innovation are 'transformative forces' that enhance productivity and resource management. 'Precision agriculture, with tools including GPS, IoT sensors, and drones, allows real-time monitoring of soil health, crop conditions, and water usage—optimizing the application of vital inputs. Advanced irrigation systems, such as smart and drip irrigation, help conserve water, thereby supporting environmental sustainability, one of the four pillars of Oman Vision 2040,' he noted. Vision 2040 targets a significant strengthening of agriculture and food security by raising food self-sufficiency from around 48% to 70%, expanding cultivated land from 544 km² to 1,044 km², and promoting high-value crop production. The strategy emphasizes sustainable water use, aiming for a 40% increase in availability, and supports the adoption of modern technologies, precision farming, and digitized agricultural services. The Ministry, in collaboration with various agri- and food-focused public enterprises, has already made significant progress in leveraging technology to achieve these goals. 'Climate-resilient crops and new farming techniques such as hydroponics and greenhouse cultivation are being introduced to maximize output with limited resources. Data analytics and AI tools help farmers make informed decisions based on market trends, crop health, and weather predictions. Agricultural biotechnology, such as tissue culture, is improving crop yields and resistance to disease. Integrating these technologies enhances productivity and ensures a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system,' Al Habsi said. A leading example of precision agriculture in Oman is the Million Date Trees Plantation Project, which has employed satellite imagery, GIS, and AI to optimize date palm cultivation. Data collected via sensors and drones are analyzed using AI/ML technologies to detect issues such as pest infestations, enabling targeted interventions. This has led to increased production and improved date quality.
