Now, travel in Third AC at the fare of sleeper
The move is likely to make the Current Booking (CB) facility unavailable in AC coaches, such as Chair Car (CC), Third AC (3A), Second AC (2A), and First AC (1A). However, the CB will be available for SL and 2S.
The CB facility was introduced for last-minute bookings, if there are any vacancies after the preparation of the first chart. It is allowed usually up to 30 minutes before departure.
Seats will be available under the CB category for any train only if there are vacant seats – after emergency quotas and different types of waitlists are processed – available after the preparation of the first chart.
With Railways deciding to prioritise filling seats in AC coaches through auto upgrades, such CB vacancies are unlikely to become available in AC coaches, except in very rare situations when seats remain vacant even after upgrades.
The new changes communicated by the Railway Board to Southern Railway and all other zonal railways on Thursday will not only ensure that all the seats and berths in AC classes get occupied to the maximum extent possible but also enhance the chances of confirmed tatkal ticket holders in SL and 2S to get upgraded to 3A or CC, respectively.
The Railway Board has also ordered that upgrades can be done only up to two levels. For example, SL can be upgraded to 3A and 2A. Similarly, 2S tickets may be upgraded to Vistadome 2S or CC. Upgrades to 1A and Executive Class are, however, restricted to only one level below, that is, from 2A to 1A or from CC to EC. For instance, a person with confirmed ticket in 3A cannot get upgraded to 1A.
Auto upgrade – such as from SL to 3A and from 3A to 2A – facility was introduced in 2006. However, this facility is limited to passengers who paid the highest fare in their class, which would mean those who paid tatkal fare or full fare of the tickets without availing of any concessions.
An official from the Southern Railway stated, 'Currently, most AC seats and berths get fully booked across the zone. However, during off-peak periods, on trains with higher AC seat availability, passengers with non-AC tickets might receive upgrades.'

Historic Ride: Why Indias First Hydrogen Train Launch Is A Landmark Moment? Heres Why It Matters
India is about to take a big leap towards green transport with the upcoming rollout of its first hydrogen train. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has today given a peek into the path-breaking loco on social media site X (Earlier Twitter), marking a big step toward greener railways. With this achievement, India stands to be a part of an exclusive club of countries – Germany, France, Sweden, and China – that have been able to implement hydrogen technology in the railway system. The first commercial run of India's hydrogen train is scheduled on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, which will prove to be a milestone achievement for green mobility in India. Bharat's First Hydrogen Train Coming soon… — Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw) August 12, 2025 Important Facts Regarding India's First Hydrogen Train: As per Indian Railways, the new hydrogen fuel train is planned to be one of the world's most powerful and longest such trains, with a whopping capability of carrying 2,600 passengers. This comes after the successful trial run of its first hydrogen fuel train coach at Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF) recently. In July, Minister Vaishnaw had posted a video of these trials, highlighting India's zeal for a "future-ready and sustainable India." He had also earlier said, "India is making a 1,200 HP Hydrogen train. This will make India one of the leaders in Hydrogen powered train technology." Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, Vaishnaw presented ambitious proposals for 35 hydrogen trains as part of the 'Hydrogen for Heritage' project. Each train is estimated to be about Rs 80 crore, and an extra Rs 70 crore is being earmarked for infrastructure building particularly for heritage and hill routes. The endeavour includes a pioneering pilot project, refitting a diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) rake with hydrogen fuel cells. Accompanying this eco-friendly project, Indian Railways is also working on holistic infrastructure, including a hybrid plant for hydrogen production, storage, and dispensing to facilitate smooth train movements. In addition, five Hydrogen Fuel Cell Based Tower Cars, each priced at Rs 10 crore, are being developed for maintenance. For the Haryana corridor, hydrogen will be fed by a 1-megawatt (MW) Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyser that will be based in Jind. GreenH Electrolysis, the entity engaged, said that the electrolyser would run continuously and would generate around 430 kg of hydrogen per day. The refuelling infrastructure that will go along with it at Jind will have a 3,000 kg hydrogen storage capacity, a hydrogen compressor, and two hydrogen dispensers with integrated pre-cooler to enable quick refuelling of the trains.

India's first hydrogen-powered train is ready! Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shares sneak peek
India has taken a significant step towards eco-friendly transportation with hydrogen-powered trains. Indian Railways is set to launch India's first hydrogen-powered train! Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday shared a video post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) showcasing a glimpse of the first hydrogen-powered train in India. India has taken a significant step towards eco-friendly transportation with hydrogen-powered trains. India is set to become the fifth country globally, alongside Germany, France, Sweden, and China, to deploy trains powered by hydrogen technology. The first hydrogen-powered train service will operate on the route connecting Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. He had said, "India is developing a 1,200 HP Hydrogen train. This will place India among the leaders in Hydrogen powered train technology." Responding to a Rajya Sabha query, Vaishnaw outlined plans for 35 Hydrogen trains under 'Hydrogen for Heritage', with individual train costs estimated at Rs 80 crore and route infrastructure expenses at Rs 70 crore for heritage and hill routes. Indian Railways has initiated an innovative project to create India's first hydrogen train through a pilot programme, involving the modification of a diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) rake with hydrogen fuel cells . The minister also detailed plans for supporting infrastructure, including an integrated facility for hydrogen production, storage and dispensation to support the train operations. The project also includes the development of five Hydrogen Fuel Cell Based Tower Cars for maintenance purposes, with each unit carrying a price tag of Rs 10 crore. For the train operating in Haryana, hydrogen will be supplied through a 1-megawatt (MW) Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser situated in Jind. SCR's ‘round trip package' at 20% discount
South Central Railway (SCR) has announced the launch of an experimental 'Round Trip Package' scheme by the Indian Railways to manage the festive season rush, offering discounted fares this year. This scheme is applicable to passengers who choose to book their return journey within a prescribed period. The discount will apply only when both onward and return journeys are booked together for the same set of passengers — with identical passenger details for both legs of the journey. Bookings under this scheme will open on August 14 for trains departing between October 13 and October 26. Return journey tickets can be booked using the connecting journey feature for travel dates between November 17 and December 1. Notably, the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) will not apply to return journey bookings under this scheme. This offer is valid only for confirmed tickets in both directions. A 20% rebate will be granted on the base fare of the return journey, provided the same class and the same originating and destination stations are maintained for both legs. There will be no refund for tickets purchased under this scheme. It is applicable to all classes and all trains, including special trains (trains on demand), but excludes trains with flexi fares. Additionally, no modifications will be allowed for either leg of the journey once booked. Concessional passes will not be admissible for return journey bookings under this scheme. Furthermore, both onward and return journey tickets must be booked using the same mode — either online or at reservation counters, according to a press release.
