In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, RS Prasanna talks about his experience working with Aamir Khan and shares more about the upcoming project.
Why RS Prasanna took an 8-year break from direction
RS Prasanna shared that he was scared to take on another film because people might compare it to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan.
Even when he watches that film now, he only sees its flaws. He said it's hard to start again unless you find a great script and the right team. Once a story excites you more than your fears, that's when you know it's time to go back on set.
He also mentioned that he spent the past few years focusing on his family, especially after the birth of his second son. He used the time to read books and watch movies, and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
So, he didn't really plan to stay away from directing for eight years—it just happened.
Highlighting the Real Issue: Discrimination Over Disability
Prasanna shared that more than the disability itself, it's the discrimination that hurts people the most. It makes one feel lesser and left out. He believes this connects to the underdog in all of us who wants to prove themselves. That's why movies like these are a fantasy coming true.
How Sitaare Zameen Par Became a Spiritual Successor
RS shared that the idea of making Sitaare Zameen Par a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par came naturally during pre-production. He often spoke about how much he admired Taare Zameen Par, calling it a masterpiece. He even asked Aamir Khan about specific scenes, like the emotional one where Ishaan Awasthi is dropped off at school.
One day, Aamir pointed out that while the new film's story is different, it shares the same emotional core and message of inclusion.
He then suggested calling it a spiritual successor, and the whole team got excited by the idea.

After taking a long break from films, Fardeen Khan decided to resume his acting career during the second lockdown at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. He then spoke about his sobriety and shared that he gave up drinking in 2020 and sought professional help to do so as his drinking was starting to interfere with his life. 'I was at a stage where I just didn't feel myself. I became sober in 2020 and I stopped alcohol in one go. I needed to stop, it was interfering with my life. I took professional help to stop and it was the best decision I have made in my life. I started drinking very, very young so this was the first time the brain fog lifted,' he shared. In an earlier interaction, Fardeen had shared that he took a 14-year-long break from acting to focus on family. He moved to London to be with his wife, Natasha Madhvani, as the couple was facing some challenges in having children. After becoming a father to a daughter and a son, the actor decided to extend his break to spend more time with his kids. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, he said, 'We were having challenges having children, and that's when we decided to take the IVF route. That's why I needed to take some time off. It wasn't meant to be this long. I thought only for a few years… get everything settled, but things didn't happen that way. Then, when my daughter was born, my heart melted, and I thought, let's spend some time with her.' Apart from Heeramandi, Fardeen has also starred in films like Khel Khel Mein, Visfot, and the recently released Housefull 5. He also has the Kannada film The Devil in the pipeline.
