Al-Hilal say first team will not play in Hong Kong's Saudi Super Cup because of fatigue
In a statement posted on the club's website on Monday, Al-Hilal said it had written to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to explain its decision, and emphasised the 'exceptional circumstances' behind the move.
The Riyadh-based club, who have won the competition five times, said competing at Hong Kong Stadium in August would violate player contracts, as it would mean they would not get the minimum 28 days of annual leave.
Al-Hilal also pointed to the fact that some of their players had been without a break for more than a year, with domestic and international commitments ending only after they lost to Fluminense in the Club World Cup quarter-finals on July 5.
Officials said the club had 'reiterated its pride in participating in the Saudi Super Cup, a tournament the club has won multiple times'.

But they added: 'However, the decision came after a review of the physical and muscular condition of several players, which showed signs of extreme fatigue after a demanding season that lasted a full year and one week.'

Influencers, rappers, YouTubers and fans: AC Milan and Liverpool's modern media
The days of football clubs travelling abroad accompanied only by a familiar press pack have been consigned to history. Advertisement And it is not just the extra TV cameras, pundits, worldwide media and club legends – a term liberally applied in some cases – that jump on the travelling bandwagon. No, space these days is found for YouTubers, fan channels, bloggers and, in the case of AC Milan, a Chinese rapper. Simba Siiviba, who boasts almost 800,000 followers on mainland social media platform Weibo, routinely incorporates AC Milan into his lyrics. One of his songs, El Capitano, was written in tribute to ex-Milan skipper Massimo Ambrosini. 'I put so many AC Milan posts on Weibo and TikTok,' Simba told the Post. Hong Kong turn to ex-Sri Lanka Test player Kaushal Silva after trio of Malaysia thrashings
Former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper batsman Kaushal Silva has been appointed as the new head coach of Hong Kong's cricket team, the sport's governing body in the city said on Monday. The 39-year-old, who played 39 Tests and scored three hundreds between 2011 and 2018, is expected to start his new job sometime next month, once his visa has come through. After a short coaching stint in England, Silva has been working in Australia since 2019, most recently at the Superkings Cricket Academy, but will now make the step up to associate cricket as Simon Willis' replacement. Silva said he was excited at the prospect of coaching the team and 'looked forward to working with the talented group of players'. His first significant challenge, other than improving an underperforming side, will be the Asia Cup, which will return to its T20 format and be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 9th to September 28th.
