The 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid is a fuel-efficient SUV that offers great fuel economy, but it has also been reported to have a few significant issues.
The SUV's transmission is one of the most commonly reported problems. Owners have reported experiencing rough, abrupt shifting and some have had to rebuild or replace the whole transmission.

'The Pathfinder Hybrid models from these years experienced problems with their braking systems and electrical issues,' said Giranda. 'Some owners reported less responsive brakes, which is a major safety concern. Additionally, electrical glitches in the infotainment and navigation systems were common, detracting from the overall reliability of the vehicle.'
Owners have reported several other common problems with the Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid model including shuddering and vibration when shifting. There have also been reports of the vehicle not accelerating after a panic stop.
This hybrid was a draw for its speed, but the severity of the recalls were not a good tradeoff. The primary problem seen was the lack of drainage under the battery which caused it to short circuit and in some cases catch on fire. 'VW determined water could enter without the rear hatch open because the sunroof drains and rear lid seals weren't assembled correctly,' according to VWProblems.
In addition, there was a recall for a missing clip for the brake pedal pivot pin which allowed the brake pedal to come off and another for a leak in the fuel injection system.
The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the only plug-in hybrid minivan on the market. Despite its practicality and above-average EV range, it's been reported to have multiple recalls and issues with its hybrid battery.
Another issue commonly reported by owners is with the electrical system, which could be a significant concern considering the hybrid nature of the vehicle.
Owners love the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu for its spacious interior and excellent fuel economy. But some owners have reported engine failures and problems with the fuel sensor. There have also been reports of issues with reduced power, which could potentially lead to dangerous situations on the road.
Additionally, there have been six recalls for the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, including one for leaking transmission fluid. Despite some positive reviews, the overall consensus points to reliability issues with this vehicle.
The 2017 BMW X5 hybrid is a luxury SUV with strong performance and a luxurious cabin. According to reviews on Edmunds, the vehicle offers a comfortable ride and sporty handling. However, owners have reported having issues with the brakes, such as experiencing pulsation or vibration, and problems with the antilock system and calipers, squeaking and brake failure.

Golf GTI Edition 50 Becomes VW's Fastest Car At Nurburgring
Volkswagen has proved yet again that it's one of the hot hatch authorities, with its new Golf GTI Edition 50 setting a new record for production VWs around the Nurburgring. Referred to as a "near-production test vehicle" by VW, this special GTI set a time of seven minutes and 46.13 seconds. That surpasses the time of seven minutes and 47.31 seconds set by the Golf R 20th Anniversary edition, a time achieved in 2022. Unlike the all-wheel-drive Golf R, the GTI sends power to the front wheels only, yet it's always remained fun to drive despite its FWD setup. The record-breaking time was set across the 12.9-mile route of the course, and an even quicker time of seven minutes and 41.27 seconds was achieved over the slightly shorter 12.8-mile stretch. The GTI 50 was not quite able to dethrone the Honda Civic Type R, which remains the FWD hot hatch king. The hottest Civic completed the 12.9-mile lap in a time of seven minutes and 44.88 seconds. Although we don't know if this GTI improves upon the normal GTi's 241 horsepower, it's highly unlikely to match the Type R's 315 hp, which is more Golf R territory. Still, the GTI 50 gets close, thanks to an optional Performance package with lightweight 19-inch semi-slick Potenza Race tires from Bridgestone. These are wrapped around lightweight forged wheels, which lower unsprung and rotating masses. A performance-tuned chassis is also part of this package, which was equipped to the GTI that completed this latest effort at the Green Hell. Benny Leuchter was behind the wheel of the GTI Edition 50 for this run, and was left blown away by the car. He was a good choice for the job, having driven the Golf GTI Clubsport S for the brand's first lap record nearly a decade ago. He did the same in the Golf R 20 Years in 2022. "The entire setup of the Golf GTI Edition 50 means you can drive the ideal line of the Nordschleife with high precision," said Leuchter. "If you really want to be fast on the track known as the 'Green Hell', the car also has to compensate for the typical bumps in the ground and reach very high cornering speeds. This is exactly what the Golf GTI Edition 50 achieves in perfection. The aplomb with which it masters the peculiarities of the legendary Nordschleife is cool: the GTI is instantly stable over the entire 20.8 kilometers." Leuchter said he would never have believed he could beat the Golf R's lap time in a FWD GTI. A full reveal of the record-breaking GTI Edition 50 is set for June 20. Volkswagen to restore minibus seen in iconic photo of LA wildfires
Volkswagen has stepped in to save and restore a blue and white VW camper minibus that miraculously survived the deadly Palisade fires near Los Angeles in January of this year. The T2 bus was left intact on a street in Malibu amid homes destroyed by the flames although its paintwork was badly scorched. At least 30 people were killed in the blazes and many made homeless. The German manufacturer said the van had become a beacon of hope as residents picked up the pieces of their lives as the flames subsided. An AP photo of the lone van in a desolate landscape was circulated widely on TV and social media at the time. "Like the rest of the world, we couldn't believe our eyes," said Mark Gillies, the company's PR head in the US. "But regardless of how good it looked in photos, we knew it was in dire need of a check-up." Volkswagen contacted the vehicle's owner, Megan Krystle Weinraub, who refers to her bus as Azul, about assessing the damage and determining whether it was still in road-worthy condition. If not, VW offered to restore Azul to pre-fires form if deemed possible. "Getting that call was such a relief," Weinraub said. "I knew Azul was becoming a symbol of hope and that people wanted to see more of her, but I had so much to work through at the time that I wasn't sure how to approach it." Once the area was accessible again, Azul was loaded onto a transport bound for Volkswagen's nearby Oxnard Campus, which houses and maintains VW's US collection of historic vehicles. Volkswagen team members said that while Azul's "good side" was impressive, the bus would require extensive mechanical fixes and bodywork to be fully operable. Work on the restoration has now begun and is expected to be completed later this year.

If you're shopping for a new car, you might want to act now before tariffs push prices higher. That's because sticker prices are still hovering near pre-tariff levels, in part because many models on dealer lots were built before the new rules took effect. "There's a lot of uncertainty, but retail prices are holding pretty steady," says Mark Schirmer, a spokesperson for Cox Automotive. In May, the average transaction price for a new vehicle was $48,799, virtually unchanged from April, according to Cox's data. "We're not quite seeing the full impact of the tariffs yet," says Joseph Yoon, consumer insights analyst at Edmunds. The automotive research firm's data shows monthly payments on new loans for both new and used vehicles rose slightly in May — an increase in line with typical month-to-month changes. As of June, the Trump administration has imposed a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and many foreign-made auto parts. The policy includes temporary exemptions for some components from USMCA countries, announced in April, but most imports still face added costs. These new auto tariffs come on top of metal import duties — including steel and aluminum tariffs as high as 50% — that are already driving up costs across the auto supply chain, even for vehicles assembled in the U.S. "There are significant tariffs on the auto industry right now," Schirmer says. "The reality is, tariffs are inflationary," and with those added costs, car prices will increase "unless something changes drastically in the near term." Instead of raising sticker prices, automakers have largely absorbed costs through scaled back rebates and financing deals since April, according to The Detroit News. "We believe dealers and automakers are getting squeezed a little bit on pricing," with dealers reporting lower profits in the second quarter compared with earlier this year, says Schirmer. So far, they've mostly held the line on retail pricing, but it's not clear how long that can last, he says. And while there was a tariff-driven buying surge in March and April, sales declined in May, according to Cox Automotive data, suggesting that many consumers may be holding back on big purchases amid economic uncertainty. That slowdown has helped keep prices flat, says Schirmer. Another reason prices haven't soared: Most vehicles currently on dealer lots were built before the tariffs took effect. But that inventory is running out, says Schirmer. As dealer inventory turns over, newer models are more likely to reflect higher costs. Ford and Subaru have already raised prices on some vehicles by as much as $2,000, and more increases are likely to follow. Depending on the model, tariffs could add anywhere from $2,000 to more than $15,000 to the cost of a new vehicle, according to estimates from the Anderson Economic Group. Uncertainty is a recurring theme when it comes to tariffs — and the auto market is no exception. It's still largely unclear how prices might change or when that might be, says Yoon. But with auto loan interest rates expected to stay relatively stable through the rest of the year, buying now can make sense if the financing works for your budget, he says. Used cars or leases could also be smart alternatives to buying new models, especially if they help lower monthly costs. Either way, "if the car you want to buy is available, you should just go buy it," Yoon says.
