Jodie Whittaker, Jason Watkins Added to BBC Cast for ‘Dear England'
Shakespeare in Love and The Handmaid's Tale actor Joseph Fiennes will reprise his stage role as Gareth Southgate, the England manager who took over a team with a historically poor record in penalty shoot-outs. Whittaker will play team psychologist Pippa Grange. Watkins will portray former Football Association chairman Greg Dyke. Ryan plays former assistant manager Steve Holland.

Several castmembers from the play will reprise their roles for TV, including John Hodgkinson, returning as former FA chairman Greg Clarke, Adam Hugill playing Harry Maguire, Josh Barrow as Jordan Pickford and Lewis Shepherd as Dele Alli.
Other castmembers include Will Antenbring as Harry Kane, Edem-Ita Duke as Marcus Rashford, Francis Lovehall as Raheem Sterling, Abdul Sessay as Bukayo Saka and Jacob Greenway as Jude Bellingham.
Billed as a fictional account of real events, based on extensive research and interviews, Dear England debuted at the National Theatre in 2023 to critical acclaim, winning the Olivier Award for best new play.
James Graham serves as writer and executive producer on the series. Rupert Goold, who directed the stage version, will direct the first episode, with Paul Whittington directing episodes two through four. Tina Pawlik is producing. Executive producers include Graham and Goold, Andy Harries and Rebecca Hodgson for Left Bank Pictures, and Jo McClellan and Sami El-Hadi for the BBC.
Produced by Left Bank Pictures, the series is now being filmed in the South of England. It will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in 2026. Sony Pictures Television will handle international distribution.

Jets held a player-led practice last Sunday
Aaron Glenn is trying to change the Jets' trajectory in his first year as the team's head coach and his approach to preparing for the regular season made room for an unusual practice last Sunday. The Jets held a practice that was not announced publicly a day after their preseason game against the Giants. It was unusual because Glenn was the only member of the coaching staff in attendance and the players led the drills in what the team is officially calling a walkthrough. Safety Andre Cisco said it showed that Glenn wants a "player-driven team." "It was personally different for me because I've never experienced that — having no coaches out there," cornerback Brandon Stephens, via Rich Cimimi of "It was great for us to lead the groups by ourselves." Cimini notes that Glenn may have gotten the idea for a player-led practice from his days as a Jets player. Bill Parcells once pulled himself and the rest of the coaching staff out of a late 1990s practice because he was angry with the team and players led the rest of the session. Those were better days for the Jets — Parcells took them to an AFC title game — and Glenn may be hoping that history repeats itself during his tenure.

Celtic held by Kairat Almaty in Champions League play-off
Celtic's Champions League hopes are firmly in the balance after they were held to a goalless draw by Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan in Glasgow in the first leg of their play-off tie on Wednesday, while Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce played out a goalless draw with Benfica. The Scottish champions pushed Bayern Munich close in the knockout phase play-offs last season after finishing 21st out of 36 teams in the league stage. But Brendan Rodgers's team could not break down the champions of Kazakhstan, who have already come through three qualifying rounds to get to this stage and are eyeing a first ever appearance in the competition proper. James Forrest was denied by a great save from Kairat goalkeeper Aleksandr Zarutskiy right at the start of the second half from one of few clear chances that fell Celtic's way at Parkhead. At the other end, Brazilian Edmilson saw a chip from inside the centre circle for Kairat land on the roof of the net following a mistake by Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers. Daizen Maeda then found himself in behind the Kairat defence late on but could only shoot straight at substitute goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov. Celtic therefore have it all to do when they make the daunting trip east next week to Almaty, not far from Kazakhstan's border with China. "We're disappointed with the result and first-half performance. We didn't start with the intent and mentality we wanted to. We were quite passive," said Rodgers, whose team were booed off at full-time. "There's no doubt we can go there and win. Of course, you want to take an advantage with you, (but) it's still very much in the balance." Fenerbahce and Benfica played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their tie in Istanbul. The Portuguese giants, who lost in the last 16 last season to Barcelona, held on in the pressure cooker atmosphere in Turkey despite having midfielder Florentino sent off in the second half. Benfica therefore have the slight edge going into the return in Lisbon, but Fenerbahce are aiming to reach the Champions League proper for the first time since 2008/09. Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt look certain to reach the league phase of Europe's elite club competition for the first time after a stunning 5-0 home win over Austria's Sturm Graz. Kasper Hogh, Odin Bjortuft and Ulrik Saltnes all scored in the first 25 minutes for last season's Europa League semi-finalists. Hakon Evjen made it four early in the second half and a William Boving own goal completed the rout. Swiss champions Basel drew 1-1 at home to FC Copenhagen in heavy rain at St Jakob-Park. Xherdan Shaqiri's early penalty put Basel in front, but Gabriel Pereira equalised for the Danish side in first-half stoppage time.
