GARETH Southgate took charge of 102 games for England before quitting in the aftermath of the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. But what were the best - and worst matches - from the popular gaffer's eight-year reign before that devastating Sunday night in Berlin? Here we take a look. THE HIGHS: Colombia 1-1 England (3-4 on pens,) 2018 World Cup This was the night that long-suffering supporters finally started to believe that it was coming home. Despite conceding a late equaliser, England held their nerve to advance to the quarter final of the World Cup 2018 on penalties. It was our first shootout victory for 22 years. Spain 2-3 England, 2018 Nations League Following on from the World Cup, England won in Spain for the first time in 31 years with a brilliant Uefa Nations League victory. Southgate's boys stunned the Seville crowd into silence with a thrilling performance that saw them lead 3-0 at the break thanks to a Raheem Sterling brace and Marcus Rashford. Although the hosts scored two after the break, the way the Three Lions tore La Roja apart excited every fan. England 2-1 Denmark, Euro 2020 semi-final Southgate led England to their first major final in 55 years as they beat Denmark after extra-time in the Euro 2020 semi-final. Having fallen behind after half an hour, the Three Lions battled back to send it to extra-time courtesy of an own goal. Then it was captain Kane who converted a rebound after Kasper Schmeichel originally saved his penalty in extra-time to win it. England 3-0 Sengal, 2022 World Cup last 16 England had already blown Iran and Wales, 6-2 and 3-0 respectively, away in the World Cup 2022 group stages before they breezed past Senegal. The free-scoring Three Lions recorded another big win to set-up a mouthwatering quarter-final against France - what could go wrong? Italy 1-2 England, Euro qualifiers, 2023 On a night when Harry Kane became England's all-time top scorer, the Three Lions recorded a first away win over Italy since 1961. It was the first game since their 2022 World Cup exit, and it ensured a perfect start to their Euro 2022 qualifying campaign. England 2-1 Holland, Euro 2024 sem-final The nation doubted Southgate's men in the semis of Euro 2024, but they responded with a barnstorming display. Xavi Simons opened the scoring for the Dutch but Harry Kane's penalty drew us level. And Ollie Watkins slotted in a brilliant winner in injury time to see the Three Lions into their second successive Euros final. AND THE LOWS.... Croatia 2-1 England, World Cup semi-final, 2018 Having led England to a first World Cup semi-final since 1990, Southgate men made a dream start as Kieran Trippier put them ahead in the early exchanges. But Ivan Perisic equalised as the Croats began to take control. Some of Southgate's substitutions were then questioned after his team were beaten in extra-time, although many gave him the benefit of the doubt as he returned a hero. Italy 1-1 England (3-2 pens) Euro 2020 final Will probably never get a better chance to have secured a trophy for the Three Lions than this final of the last European Championship. Luke Shaw gave us the lead after just seconds, but just like against Croatia three years earlier, we sat back and let our rivals back into it. Leonardo Bonucci duly equalised in the second half and the game eventually went to penalties. The unfortunate Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were all brought on to take a spot-kick, but the brave trio all missed as the Azzurri broke our hearts to take the prize. England 0-4 Hungary, Nations League 2023 A year on from the Euros and it was utter embarrassment for Southgate in this Nations League game at Molineux. It was our biggest home defeat since 1928 and the result led to England being relegated from the top group of the Nations League and back to one that contained the Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece. England 1-2 France, World Cup 2022 quarter-finals Another case of what could have been. Having been free-scoring throughout Qatar 2022, many fancied us to go all the way at the World Cup despite taking on the holders in the quarters. We fought back from going behind to level through Kane and many believe that France were then there for the taking had Southgate deployed a more attacking approach. Instead, they seemed content with what they had until Olivier Giroud pounced 12 minutes from time to win it. But there was still one more twist of the knife for England as the usually-reliable Kane skied a late penalty over the bar uncharacteristically as we crashed out.

Joseph Fiennes held newlywed as she died after 'horrific' accident

Joseph Fiennes has detailed a shocking accident that saw him comfort a woman as she lay dying. The English actor, 55, is best known for playing William Shakespeare in the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love, Monsignor Timothy Howard in American Horror Story, and Commander Fred Waterford in The Handmaid's Tale. However, this week he recalled witnessing a distressing incident while on holiday in Costa Rica. Joseph was a guest on the Travel Secrets podcast, in which he spoke about his passion for horse riding, but how a ride during a past holiday took a tragic turn. 'I was staying at this wonderful hacienda at the foot of an old volcano,' he told host Tanya Rose. 'I love horse riding, and I got on to a horse early in the morning to go with a fellow traveller who was staying at the hacienda. 'She had just gotten married, and I remember getting up on the horse. It was getting quite hot, going into the shade, looking back, seeing this lovely woman kiss her husband goodbye, and then the horse reared up, and she sadly pulled on the reins and the weight of the horse came over and the whole horse landed on her and she fell back and really broke her head on the gravel and died.' The actor shared the story after being asked about one of his 'most unexpected' travel experiences. He went on to share it was 'the most unexpected, horrific accident, and in a moment of absolute beauty and joy and the sun and Costa Rica and horses'. 'In an instant you're reminded that anything can happen. I held her for a while; her poor husband was in such shock that he couldn't comprehend or communicate. And she slipped away. And I couldn't sleep for, God, I think a month.' Although Joseph did get back on a horse again during that holiday, he said he 'galloped and went hell for leather to get it out of my system'. 'But when I got back my dad did say, 'You can never be entirely sure how horses are trained'. Maybe it saw a snake, I don't know. Maybe it got scared of something. But it could be the way certain horses are trained, it can get beaten into submission a bit, they can be very temperamental so you have to be super careful.' Earlier this week, The Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically died while on a family holiday to the country in Central America. The 54-year-old actor began his career playing Theo Huxtable, the son of Bill Cosby's character Heathcliff Huxtable, on the sitcom from 1984 until 1992. On Sunday he was swimming with his family at a beach in Limon when he got into trouble while swimming and drowned. More Trending In a statement obtained by People, the Judicial Investigation Agency said: 'The victim appears to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current. The man was rescued by bystanders and taken to shore, where he received treatment from the Costa Rican Red Cross. However, he was declared lifeless at the scene.' According to the outlet, his autopsy has now been completed, and the actor died from 'accidental asphyxiation by submersion'. He is survived by a wife and daughter, who he had chosen to keep out of the public eye. Got a story? EXCLUSIVE There's only one Gareth Southgate? Don't you believe it, writes KATIE HIND... As Joseph Fiennes is the spitting image of ex-England coach in TV remake of stage hit, do the other lookalikes match up?

He was widely praised for his 'almost AI-grade exactness' in playing Sir Gareth Southgate on stage. And as these pictures show, Joseph Fiennes, with his neat beard and focused expression, has lost none of his uncanny resemblance to the former England manager. The actor is reprising his role for the BBC adaptation of Dear England. Fiennes, 53, was seen on set for the first time as filming got under way this week for the highly-anticipated four-part series, which will air next year. The Shakespeare in Love star was spotted wearing an England training kit while recording scenes at top public school Harrow, which is being used for the squad's Staffordshire training ground, St George's Park. He was joined by former Doctor Who star, Jodie Whittaker, who is playing the team's psychologist Pippa Grange, and was seen wearing an official navy polo shirt. He was joined by former Doctor Who star, Jodie Whittaker (left), who is playing the team's psychologist Pippa Grange (right), and was seen wearing an official navy polo shirt The series, which is being made by Leftbank, the production company behind The Crown, will feature an all-star cast including Bafta winner Jason Watkins, 62, as FA chairman Greg Dyke. A cast of actors has also been hired to play various members of the England team, including Will Antenbring as Harry Kane, Edem-Ita Duke as Marcus Rashford, Francis Lovehall as Raheem Sterling, and Jacob Greenway as Jude Bellingham. Wayne Rooney will be played by Bobby Schofield, who most recently appeared in Liverpool-based drug mafia drama, This City Is Ours. Dear England has been adapted for television by James Graham, who also wrote the play, and tells the story of Sir Gareth's efforts to transform the team's performance and address the nation's long history of footballing disappointments – particularly penalty shootouts. The show begins with a flashback to 1996 when Sir Gareth missed a penalty in the Euro 96 semi-final defeat by Germany at Wembley. The plot charts the successes and failures of the men's team under Sir Gareth: the 2018 World Cup in Russia, when England reached the semi-finals, the 2020 European Championships which led to defeat in the final, and the team's quarter-final exit from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Mr Graham has confirmed that the TV show will also include Euro 2024, where the team made the final, only to be beaten by Spain, Southgate's last act as England manager before resigning. Much of the action will take place in the grounds of £75,000-a-year Harrow. Josh Barrow will feature as goalkeeping star Jordan Pickford Adam Hugill will feature as centre-back Harry Maguire Lewis Shepherd will star as Como player Dele Alli Hamish Frew will play Monaco's Eric Dier Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson will be played by David Shields Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier will be played by Michael Watson Further scenes were filmed at Wolverhampton Wanderers' ground Molineux last week, which is believed to be standing in for Wembley. The play premiered at the National Theatre in 2023 to five-star reviews, winning an Olivier award for Best New Play and enjoying a sell-out run. Joseph Fiennes was nominated for an Olivier award. It returned to the National Theatre earlier this year before embarking on a national tour. James Graham said bringing football to the stage had been 'one of the most rewarding moments of my writing life'.
